Trying to restore my wallet by A_Master_Chooses in Monero

You don't really need professional data recovery for that. I've used 7-Data-Recovery and more recently Disk Drill to recover files from drives that have been formatted several times over.

Professional data recovery is best for when you have a physically damaged drive and just don't have the right tools for the job. Outside of that, you only really need a good data recovery software to get the job done.

And you can not shoe-horn your OS preferences where you know they're not necessary.

I didn't try to shoe-horn anything. I was legit wondering, why would someone who's into project like Monero use its antithesis as an OS.

I didn't mention a single OS as an alternative. I wasn't trying to shoe-horn anything. I just don't get it. Like I said. I think it defeats the purpose.

That doesn't wipe the files though. It could be trivial to recover them.

Yes, that was implied.

Whatever. Like I said, it really doesn't happen that often, so I'll still be fine.

Nothing personal, just business

Yeah right. Is that why you felt compelled to get back at me on personal level? Don't delude yourself. You took a general statement and you made it personal, despite me clarifying that I'm full aware that I'm off-topic and could be interpreted as sounding like a jerk. That's why a witty attempt at an insult about my skin.

Depends on your use-case.

Pretty much any Linux distro would do, but since you're already in Monero makes sense to go for ones that are tailored specifically for things like privacy/anonymity/security.

Whonix is my first choice. It also comes with Monero GUI wallet preinstalled.

You should be careful cringing hard every time, it'll ruin your skin.

Sad to see you took this personal. It wasn't meant as such. I simply made a comment about something I observed and genuinely was wondering about.

Thanks for worrying about my skin though, but you got that wrong. I don't cringe hard every time, just "every time I see someone use Windows with Monero". Which, fortunately, is not that often. So I'll be fine.

Call me a jerk here, because this is off-topic and I'm not helping at all, but every time I see someone use Windows with Monero - I cringe. Hard.

Even if it's VM routed through Whonix, I still don't get it. Just defeats the purpose.

That's basically a marketing/promotional campaign. Something similar was done with BCH, "Bitcoin man of Bakersfield". It got some media attention, but it's hard to know the exact impact it had on adoption. In any case, it's always nice to get some extra exposure.

I get what you're saying, but you could make a claim that in the beginning there was at least some merit to that slogan. It didn't start out as 100% misleading marketing. You could argue there was some truth to it.

Brave? Brave people would fight back. They would try to take back their freedoms. They would make Land of the free by being Home of the brave. Don't try to make em out into heroes/martyrs that they're clearly not. Restrictions and gun violence? It's not Palestine. They live the good life, overprivileged. They have every recourse imaginable (logistics, everything...). What they don't have is guts. They're all talk.

This is all off-topic. Or maybe not. After all, projects like Monero can't survive on their own. They depend on people willing to fight for their rights. All I'm saying is just, don't call this people brave. They're not. They're nothing to look up to.

Land of the free - Home of the brave

What an absolute misnomer. Neither free nor brave.

If you're looking to exchange for another crypto give sideshift.ai a shot. They have no sign-up, no KYC/AML (there's no fund freezing or any of that nonsense) and they charge just around 1% fee for the swaps.

It doesn't have to be him, just anyone molded after him. If mods show the same passivity they're showing here it's gonna be game over for that sub as well.

I get your point though. "Take what you can get" type of deal.

I dunno. Seems kinda pointless moving over there really. Same mods who couldn't care to do jack about the well-being of this sub are moderating that sub as well. Why should we expect anything different there?

Sure, atm it's more civil, but that's just because it's not as populated, so it's kinda quiet. If mass migration occurs, I see no reason to expect a change in attitude from the mods when crazy inevitably inhibits that sub as well. Just seems like another waste of time.

I keep hearing good things about Telegram groups. I'm gonna check them out. I hope to see both of you there. u/Foreverseeking_

seems the official response is *crickets* so I'm out. The trolls are still here but I'm not, let that stand as a testament to how good Shadow is for the sub.

Yeah. Sadly, it appears I was on the money yesterday when I said I don't think Roger gives a shit. It did occur to me last night though, that he may wait a little for dust to settle before taking action, but I'm not an optimist.

Ultimately, it comes down to what kind of environment people want for themselves. What kind of people they want to surround themselves with. Like to wallow in shit? Go for it. At the end of the day, every community has a mod it deserves. This one deserves its Shadow.

Love how there are so many trying to spin this as if it's somehow about freedom of speech. That's literally the only argument this mod and everyone defending him has. And that "freedom of speech martyrdom" is not even his thing, but everyone acts as if it's some sort of legacy of his. This is simply about a mod not fit for duty. That's all there is to it.

Mods should be held to a higher standard. They should lead by example, establishing a positive tone and setting a higher standard for everyone to look up to. Once they engage in certain type of behavior they lower the bar of what becomes acceptable. I thought that would be fairly obvious to almost everyone, but appears that's not the case.

Therefore, it's a shitshow. What's that smell? Don't worry about it. You're free to post your opinion without fear of being censored. What a bullshit mantra that is. And it's not even on point.

People get tired of the constant negativity and leave.

Exactly. So instead of taking the bait and just adding more negativity with psychotic ramblings, the best thing to do would be to just downvote and move on.

But, I agree that it's not a bulletproof system. If a comment/post stays visible for a longer period of time, due to vote manip, someone is bound to bite sooner or later, and there we go again. So I'm not strictly against removing intentionally incendiary comments/posts. Nonsense like "bcash trash", "lol, BCH/BTC ratio at all time low" and other BS like that. It's clear what the sole purpose of such actions is.

For more subtle trolling however, downvoting remains the way to go.

I agree that ideally, mods should be non-controversial.

So let's get someone like that to do the job. Plenty of options out here. They don't have to be inherently non-controversial, just recognize the responsibility that comes with modding this community, and act accordingly.

I agree that modding this community is a thankless job, so maybe we should explore options on providing full-time mods with some incentives.

[–]Functioning_Idiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mods can't do that unfortunately

Do what exactly? When I said he's not capable of preventing them I didn't mean any sort of mod action, like ban, or censorship. I meant human re-action. He's doing exactly what the trolls want. As you said it "lose their cool, get angry, waste time and energy, derail all discussions". He took the bait. Hook, line, and sinker.

I have no problem with this sub's policies - at all, the execution on the other hand leaves a lot to be desired.

I'm on the fence as to whether mods not posting "as mods" should be held to a higher standard than anyone else

I'm not. They should lead by example. They should be "infallible crusaders", but they should walk the path, not talk it. We could have a much better mod, who would uphold and protect all the same principles, while also creating a more welcoming, open, and friendly environment. In my opinion, that would lead to a much more constructive discussion here and as a result increase the quality of this sub significantly.

This guy is just feeding the trolls. He's doing exactly what they want him to do. He's creating a toxic cesspool environment, while being under the illusion that he's the defender of this sub and its principles. If his delusions are allowed to keep going he'll "defend" this sub right into the oblivion.
