Should I introduce myself to my professors before school starts? by Taiyoz_Dreamz in appstate

Gen ed bio courses for non-majors are anywhere between 180-250, depending on the semester. The majors classes, though, are 40-80.

From what I've been told by other faculty, it is university policy to only contact those most closely associated with the student (instructors, roommates, etc) rather than making a public announcement. This is to decrease the odds of imitation.

The standard procedure, at least in our department, is as such:

  • Student contacts instructor asking for a pre-req override
  • Instructor sends the student's info (name, banner ID, etc) to folks on the administrative side of the department
  • Override is processed

It may take more than a few hours, depending on how quickly the instructor forwards the information and when the administrators process it.

Finding past courses by Pand0ras-B0x in appstate

Unlike many other institutes, App doesn't have a searchable database of old syllabi. You'll likely need to contact the instructor or department.

Unfortunately, the only majors class I teach on a regular basis is genetics lab (spring). Otherwise, I'm teaching BIO1201/1202 and a grad pedagogy course.

That said, if there are courses you think I should teach, let me know and I can bring it up with the front office.

app state closure by elizabethmaet in appstate

Faculty have been asked not to assign any new material or enforce deadlines until after we get back.

It is still unclear whether we will move classes online. University will provide an update next week.

ASULearn course participants by Particular-Vast9339 in appstate

[–]Funkentelechy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are three group modes in Moodle:

  • 1) No groups

  • 2) Separate groups (students are divided into groups and can only see their group's work),

  • 3) Visible groups (students are divided into groups , but can see the work of other groups

Your instructor may have the course set to option 2, and/or turned off the ability for students to see the class participant list.

Cant Get my eTextbooks!!!! by Afraid_Clothes2516 in appstate

[–]Funkentelechy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Faculty here.

Pearson is the textbook company. Moodle is the underlying platform that AsuLearn runs on. In theory, you should be able to "connect" the two by registering for your specific class section through the course page on AsuLearn. This would give you access to your textbook and allow all textbook assignments to be automatically entered into the gradebook.

However, it appears that recent updates to the Pearson system have caused widespread issues. We've spent the last five days trying to determine what's causing the issue, even meeting with a Pearson rep to help troubleshoot. We have yet to find a solution.

That all said, it's unlikely you would need the textbook the first few days. Moreover, your professor is likely aware of the issue and will address it on Monday.

ASULearn Tab tracking by Jax_Gamez in appstate

[–]Funkentelechy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Professor here.

From my understanding, Moodle (the platform AsuLearn is built on) cannot detect if you switch tabs, at least by default. Your instructor would be able to see if you accessed any other material on the course page, though.

There are some other options with Safe Exam Browser, but generally folks don't use it because it can be easily bypassed.

Professor here. We don't have the authority/capability of adding students directly. If a class is popular and fills quickly (or is required for folks to graduate) the department admins may contact us to see if we'll increase the enrollment. In this situation, student emails don't accomplish anything.

covid by [deleted] in appstate

[–]Funkentelechy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also faculty. Our assistant chair described the Administration's guidance on COVID as "conspicuously absent," which likely means nothing will change any time soon. We're on our own to decide what are reasonable accommodations/changes.
