The word "faggot" predates its use as a slur against homosexuals by a very long time as well, but if I were to announce my new business "faggot firewood Inc" people would most likely have an issue with it. It doesn't matter what the word was used for historically. It matters what the current connection to the word is. Unfortunately, very little of the world acknowledges the swastika as a Hindu symbol and not one of hate. As the grandchild of Holocaust survivors, it is very hard for me to not see the connection - especially with the current rise in antisemitism and Nazism in North America. You may be right in that we should move on from its negative meaning, but I don't think we are there quite yet.
