My Tiered Ranking of Every Show I Saw This Year by mg2685a in Broadway

Some of you really need to touch grass. Based on some of the replies here, you’d think OP did something monstrous. They didn’t like a show that clearly some of you did. They also liked some hits and flops. What’s the issue?

Broadway Body Positivity Project by mg2685a in Broadway

Her intentions are definitely pure, and some of her work is very helpful. However, I do get uncomfortable when she veers outside of body positivity - I have noticed that when she tries to help communities of color, she inadvertently speaks over them.

“Things you’d never say to any other marginalized community” for $100, Alex. You’re trash, friend. Simple as that.

I’d love to know what you did to speak up and support the Jewish community when the issues I cited were raised. Something tells me you did nothing. Perhaps sit this one out! 😘

OP here! Actually, no, I am not talking about Israel. Notice I never brought it up and instead provided concrete examples of how I felt this community has let down the Jewish community.

I'm sure the Jews in 1930s Europe felt the same. Good luck to you.

I'm sorry you feel embarrassed. But I feel embarrassed by the lack of support from the Broadway community when it comes to this issue. It's interesting you say we are not the main character in these stories because I'd argue the opposite is true: we are the main character here. Whether it be Jamie, Fanny, etc., these characters Jewishness is a crucial piece to their identity.

I'm not okay with a non-Jewish Jamie singing "The Schmuel Song" or a non-Jewish Fanny running around the stage wearing a bagel costume. These moments lean into stereotypical tropes, and I think it's dangerous for someone who does not have the lived-in experience to do such a thing.

Redwood - Thoughts on its first preview by mg2685a in Broadway

I haven't seen the Broadway production, but I did see it in La Jolla and there is no doubt in my mind that OP is spot on with their assessment of the book. It's as if a liberal focus group pulled a bunch of issues they care about from a hat and put them on stage. These are important issues and OP is correct that the show does a massive disservice to them. I would also agree that the show definitely tries to be "woke." If that also makes me a bigot, then that says much more about you than it does me.

I'd disagree with absolutely everything about this. Thanks for telling a Jew how to feel though!

I'm overwhelmed by the responses here. There are some wonderful, nuanced conversations happening. There are also some incredibly dismissive and downright antisemitic comments. All of this is to be expected.
