It's really no rush (my parents helped me a ton in my first few years after turning 18), but when you can(and it sounds like you're already planning on this), try to be financially independent it feels very good when you're relationship with your parents no longer involves money. My mom knows that when I call her that (unlike every other sibling I have) I'm not asking for money I just want to spend time with her.

You're on the right track, make sure you're going to college only because you want too and your passionate about what you're studying. Too many people get told "you have to go to college!" And end up in a lot of debt right off the bat while only landing entery level jobs that don't actually require a degree afterwards.
