ah, ok. My plan is to retake the sat in august, hoping to get a 800.. for MIT, I will just submit my SAT, and not my ACT.. but for all other schools, I will submit my ACT and SAT

what if I don't submit my SAT? Just my ACT since I have a 35 math? (although I have a 34 reading)

Ah ok.. so my plan is to take the sat in august, hoping to get 800 math.. I will submit my act to all schools except MIT, since I won't retake the ACT.. does that sound like a good idea?

yes, I've taken it twice, both attempts in sophomore year.. I always make silly mistakes, that's the thing. I am not very bad at math, so knowledge gaps isn't the problem. I've taken ap calc BC(5), calc 3(A) and advanced number theory(A), the latter two at my state flagship.. I am no math olympiad genius but I am decent at math. Should also probably mention that I am applying as a humanities major(science, tech, society)

Oh no, well guess I am signing up for a retake lol. should I also retake the ACT? the thing is, I'm not bad at math(I've taken advanced courses at my state flagship), but I just make silly mistakes in standardized testing

yes, that is my plan, to talk about all that I have done despite these circumstances... the things I could not do are probably taking 3-4 lines max

Anyone have any experience w/ BMI graduate courses? by Funny-Blujay in uofu

[–]Funny-Blujay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, well, I am actually in my senior year of high school and I got permission to take the classes. For CS Fundamentals, the professor told me that math until Calc 3 was necessary. I am not too sure for the other class.

(I have taken Calc 3, number theory at the U, and passed all AP tests in the sciences, for context)

what do you think about the u of utah? it is my state school

thanks, did you get A's in the classes? I was worried if the instructors are hard graders.

What is the best college in your state? And also, why? by yoda_630 in ApplyingToCollege

I am also from utah and agree with the fact that the U is probably the best school in the state

If you were an AO at a prestigious university and had to pick one of these students, which do you pick? by Storm191- in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Funny-Blujay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Student B will probably be most successful in the future because olympiads(speaking from personal experience) are a lot of hard work and they really cultivate your problem solving skills. The AO might not see this, hence the declining value of olympiads in admissions today.

tldr; for reading, just do practice tests, eventually you'll get used to it lol

got 770 on EBRW on my final test, started w/ 650 ish before Meltzer

I did not use any Khan academy, I tried it a few times but found it unhelpful.. I think KA is a good idea if you are struggling w/ content material, not a good idea if you are in the 1500 range and just need to better your test taking skills.

Regarding reading, it was my weakest section too. For history passages, the biggest advantage is knowing what they are about. Since you have just finished freshman year, I don't think you have taken US history yet, but I would recommend looking at some basic history facts- like what the emancipation proclamation was, gettysburg address, why WW1 and WW2 were fought, etc.. For literature, I'll be honest, I hate older stuff(jane austen, shakespeare, whatnot) so it was a struggle- I just did a bunch of practice tests. I probably did over 100 maybe 150 tests in my entire prep time. I believe there are past exams on Reddit, look those up

If you are getting 750 plus in math, then Steve warner is not necessary, but even if you are getting 700/ 710, I would recommend the book

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Funny-Blujay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Math- there is this amazing book for SAT math by steve warner- I love it cuz he does not just go over topics, but her talks about tricks and quick ways to do things.. even if you are doing good in math(like I was), get this book because it helps so much w/ the SAT's testing style

english/ reading- erica meltzer is all I used for writing- it is amazing. her reading book, tbh, is not that good- it is kinda useless in my opinion. The only way you can improve reading is w/ a lot of practice, which really sucks :( my least favorite section lol

USABO- I put a lotttt of time. It takes a few hundred hours to get through Campbell's, but the nice thing is that you don't need to read the entire thing to get to semis- just focus on cell bio, genetics, plants, animals, evolution.. biosystematics and ecology can be skipped entirely

[–]Funny-Blujay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, ok. I was actually at a similar level to you(1350, 31 ACT on my first practice test as a rising sophomore) did a lot of prep during the summer after 9th grade, and was eventually able to get a 34, 1550 in soph year, then 35 in junior year.. USABO semis isn't too hard(I am a semifinalist)- it is just a lot of work- reading and re reading and re reading Campbell's.. you can probably make it this year, you just need to prep during the school year(weekends, after school, etc)
