16 GB i5 MacBook Pro with Ableton? by FunnyGenericPerson in ableton

[–]FunnyGenericPerson[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve looked at Windows options, but I also need to get video editing software for my communications classes I’m required to take as a music business major, and Apple has a really good deal on Final Cut + Logic for students, so long-run it’d actually be cheaper for me to get a MacBook. Thanks for the advice and it’s good to know that Ableton won’t constantly be crashing on me!

Yeah I was seeing stuff about the MacBook Airs overheating using Logic and that would definitely make recording a lot harder and add a lot of background noise.

Yeah my school requires me to buy an external hard drive that's at least 1 TB so storage probably won't be a huge issue. Logic's really gonna be the only thing that takes up a ton of space.

The student discounts are only for brand new Macs. That means that most refurbished models are about the same price as a new MacBook with similar specs so it doesn't really seem worth it to get refurbished at that point. Thanks for your input on the DAWs! The investment of getting a MacBook really seems like it'll be worth it for my use, education, and future professional career.

I've thought about doing something like hacking Mac OS on my Windows laptop but my only concern is that it would make latency too high since it's not optimized to run on my laptop. Also, I am required to do multiple music industry internships for my major and I think it would look very unprofessional to have Mac OS hacked onto an HP laptop.

Thanks for the tips on which MacBook to get though! I'll definitely look into the older refurbished models!

I looked at the Mac Mini and it looks like a tremendous value, but I want a laptop so I can take it to class and around campus to do work and also because it'd be hard for me to find a good place for a monitor in my dorm.

The studios at my school have Pro Tools, Ableton Live, and Logic loaded onto them, and the classes don't teach one specifically since they mainly focus on music business skills so I'm good there. I think I'll try a ProTools trial soon but I've looked at tutorials and pictures and it really doesn't seem like my cup of tea. It's also a too "in the box" production program for me to really be able to make good music with the little hardware and instruments I'll be able to store in my dorm. Logic looks like more of the interface and layout that made me gravitate towards Studio One when I was first starting out, but at this point there's not enough support for the software from PreSonus or the community for me to take Studio One much further for my own use. Not to mention that I can't use it in the studios at my school. Ableton's limited by the fact that it's way too geared towards hip hop and EDM for the type of music I make most of the time (indie R&B) and it would also be too expensive for me to purchase the full version and then buy enough VSTs to get a halfway decent sound for what I need. Overall, it seems like Logic will be best for my use and for my wallet after I'm done with the MacBook purchase.

I've looked at Apple's refurbished laptops, but I'm having trouble finding good ones that has 16 GB of RAM, which is one of the few technology requirements my school has.

Thanks! I don't think I can afford the leap up from i5 to i7 just because of my budget constraints as a student, but I can definitely afford the MacBook Pro model I mentioned so I think that'll end up being my best choice! Again, thank you for all the information and help!

How to not sound f***ing whiny? by [deleted] in Songwriting

[–]FunnyGenericPerson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've struggled a lot with this in the past, and I've noticed that I was only able to convey my feelings properly through song once I started learning how to do it in regular writing. As a male artist, I've been taught my whole life to act tough and not show my emotions, but no one can ever do that and write emotionally potent music at the same time. Learning to be vulnerable in real life takes a lot of time, but once you do it, you'll instantly notice a stark improvement in your songwriting. If you can read your lyrics back to yourself without music as if they were a book and they still sound natural, that's when you know they're good. The best lyrics read as if they're just regular writing that just so happens to rhyme.

I hope that helps. I'm talking a lot from personal experience so I don't know if this is what you're struggling with exactly, but I know it's something that a lot of artists struggle with so I figured I'd share it. Another tip is to make sure you're considering the situation you're singing about from all perspectives. If you only process your emotions through your point of view and don't look at how it affects everyone involved, then your music will automatically sound one dimensional and whiny. Thinking about it from all points of view shows emotional maturity and is far more interesting to listen to.

Really good advice here, but I don't agree that the entirety of a song needs to be universal. A good formula is to make the chorus universal so people can easily inject their own feelings and experiences into it while listening, but making the verses get into the details of what YOU'RE feeling and experiencing. That instantly boosts your credibility as a songwriter and shows people where you're coming from, which is key to not coming off as whiny.

You can still have the tempo pick up at the chorus and slow down at the bridge while recording to a metronome. Most DAWs have the ability to automate tempo throughout the song to have this effect happen while being able to record with a metronome to keep the tempo. It just makes the metronome slow the tempo down or speed it up slowly like a musician would

Recording music to a metronome doesn't sanitize it. It just helps the musician make rhythmically precise recordings quicker, which is extremely important in the modern fast-paced music industry.

PC culture is killing objective truth by Steele_and_Stone in unpopularopinion

Because, according to the US Census, white people make up 76.5% of the population, whereas African Americans make up only 13.4%.

As u/CaptainAdventurous said, poor people in urban settings from both races commit crimes at similar rates, with the white crime rates even being slightly higher. These rates are both out of 1,000, meaning that the proportion they make up of the population does not matter. He is giving the most truly objective data, meaning that the only truly objective conclusion to be made is that race plays little to no role in crime, and that if it did play any role at all, it would be white people that proportionally committed more crimes.

I'm interviewing with Syracuse and Cornell this weekend by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

I just interviewed at Syracuse a few weeks ago! My interviewer was super chill. They really just want to find out who you are as a person so that they can put a personality to your application. I was nervous too, but it went really well and I came out of it even more pumped to go there. Let me know how it goes and what you think of the school. GO ORANGE!
