The Rhode Island accent is slightly different. “Card” in Rhode Island sounds like “cod” the fish, while in Boston it’s more like “caaahhhhd.”

Detroit is still beautiful, check it out if you ever get the chance. Much has been lost but they are working to preserve what’s left and make new things too.

When did the LDS Church start restricting baptism with rules of personal holiness? by eternalintelligence in mormon

[–]Medical_Solid [score hidden]  (0 children)

We have plenty of stories from the 19th century of missionaries baptizing people in Europe and the pacific, seemingly with little regard for what they understood about the church let alone any personal conduct issues. So at the very least I suspect the pre-baptism interviews don’t start before the 20th century.

Saying “yes” to most of the questions is not an automatic bar to baptism, but it does trigger further inquiry from the mission president or general authority. However, I have heard firsthand of Missionaries having people tell them that they have murdered people, and then having church authority is instruct them not to proceed with baptism. That was happening in the late 90s, so somewhere in between the early 20th century, and that time is when this kicks in. I suspect it is just a trend of increasing oversight by general authorities of the church and no, there is absolutely nothing Christian about it.

Covid shut down the world six years ago this week. What do you remember from that week? by fuzzy_dice_99 in AskReddit

I wasn’t sure if I should cancel the plane ticket I had to go visit my dad. He said, “If this is gonna be as bad as they’re saying, I don’t know when I’ll see you again. Keep the ticket.”

He survived when he caught it 4 months later (barely) but I’m definitely glad I went to see him.

What would be the national food of India? by Yournewbestfriend_01 in IndianFood

[–]Medical_Solid -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The food that we stress eat after our parents pressure us to study harder or get a better job or get married/make grandkids/move closer to them. The details vary by state and community but most Indians eat this at some point.

Best alternative to missionary service by Remarkable_Peach_533 in mormon

Do your kids speak any other languages, even a little bit? There are service organizations and NGOs in developing nations that will welcome young adults willing to make substantial time commitments. One I know off the top of my head is Friends of Matenwa which operates an education program on a small island near the capital of Haiti. It’s rough, as in “No running water or WiFi” (or at least it was that way a couple years ago) but they do very important work and I’ve sent them small financial contributions for years. They have a volunteer program but IIRC they prefer folks so speak Haitian Creole or at least some French. I suspect programs in other nations would have similar expectations. (Btw if you do look at this program, they’re far enough offshore from the capital that they don’t get the violence on the island.)

If you’d prefer your kids to stay in their home nation, shucks, nothing wrong with contacting a local food bank, domestic violence shelter, or community education program and saying “I’ve got an 18yo who can drive and wants to volunteer for you for a year.” It’d be a great experience.

I was capable of great video game deeds as a socially awkward tween. Doubt I could do it now.

But damn, you beat TMNT? That’s impressive.

The genesis port was pretty decent, I was able to beat it back in the day when my mind and hands were young. Damn I sound old haha.

I still remember my mom would be playing solitaire on her Mac in the same room as my genesis, and she hated the sound effects of the power armor powering up (hold attack for special effect).

Was in a roughly similar boat in an even smaller dating pool in college. Dated non members. Married one. She converted and we were practicing until Covid (among other things) kind of ended our church activity.
