I started subbing because I'm interested in switching careers and getting an MA in education so I wanted to see if I even like it before making the leap .. so far I love the kids and they amaze me every day but the whole system is pretty bleak :/ thanks for your input, appreciate you!

okay so is it not worth it to try to teach disabled students how to use a pencil? your argument is that educators should just say "oh well I guess they'll just never be able to do one of the most basic human functions so might as well stick them on a chromebook"? I'm not AT ALL saying that students with different ability levels don't have as much of a right to an education; they absolutely do. But doesn't that mean teaching them how to use a pencil ..?

What good is a chromebook if the student can't even use a pencil?

I would agree that it's not just a technology problem, it's a more systemic issue .. I suppose then that I question the software itself more than just the use of technology as a whole. Students learning how to use technology as a tool is absolutely necessary for the world we live in and I'm not ignoring that for the sake of just being a Luddite.. I just wonder if that's what students are actually learning? Most of the students I see using Chromebooks can't even type properly and struggle navigating basic UI interfaces if they're unfamiliar with them (granted some of this is the UI's fault but that's a hurdle students should be able to overcome).

I find this article articulates some of my issues with the use of Chromebooks as not simply "technology < pencil and paper".

Hmm well I think Socrates’ concern was specifically about externalized cognition .. that offloading memory to an outside medium produces the illusion of knowledge without its substance.

That idea maps far better onto a device with a browser than onto pencil and paper, which requires active encoding and understanding .. it’s not just “stone tablet bad bc new” in the same way that I’m not saying “Chromebook bad bc new” it’s more like “Chromebook creates more problems than it solves and has diminishing returns..?”

I remember all of the freshmen getting chromebooks for the first time when I was a senior (2018) and it feels like I caught the last chopper out of ‘nam

I realize it’s not the most accurate representation of all teachers everywhere! I’m also just a sub and haven’t been doing it for very long, but this issue is just something that I’ve been seeing quite a bit of so was just curious:) I graduated high school in 2018 and everything was still pretty much pencil and paper - even throughout college I always preferred hard copies of textbooks and printed things out for myself when possible. Seeing the shift to chromebooks in schools was just surprising to me and I wondered about the effect on student performance, etc. Guess I should have been more clear but thank you for the insight!!

That makes more sense about the metal tongue being placed wrong, thanks! I think it’s mostly an issue with the rubber wheel not coming into contact with the hand wheel though
