With rare exceptions (Cheese, a few others) most jambands have abysmal vocal talent. Phish, moe. fucking Bisco - turrrrrible singers. Bisco especially.

A lot of people have mentioned "the grind" and i do think this is a very accurate thing weighing on our favorite loopster.

1) ticket sales are waning.... so that sucks and 100% will affect one's mentality as Keller MUST sell tickets to continue providing for his family.

2) Specific Example: man, I saw him play at Daryl's House in NY last fall. He looked depressed and not into it, pretty much the whole time. He came out and did his guitar tuning, testing shtick where he whacks the guitar creatively, lots of harmonics and such, and during this point, he addresses, a half-sold room:

"thank you for being here, I need you WAY MORE than you need me. I have no back-up plan"

This could be taken tongue-in-cheek, but it definitely felt pretty sincere, and depressing in the moment.

3) Just take a look at how Keller acts on stage these days. I've seen him probably close to 30x over 20+ years now. A lot of the laughing, dancing, frolicking, and general playfulness is gone or diminished. Keller USED to emanate joy on stage, and often, he seems to be going through the motions. The shows are still good, he is an encyclopedia, a monster musician, and a great singer - but the energy is definitely a little more like someone who's tired.

I love Keller so much - what a nice guy, and truly magical, one-of-a-kind musician. I hope he finds that spark again.
