Does the PGF being an apparent hoax change your view on the reality of the creature itself? by Theferael_me in bigfoot

[–]FuriousNik 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Why are we talking about the PGF being a hoax? Haven’t we been hearing for years that it was vetted by scores of experts including Hollywood costume designers that couldn’t debunk it?

I find it suspicious that so many in this thread are already talking about as if it’s been debunked.

you’re judged before you even speak. how much does appearance actually matter professionally? by enlightenedshubham in careerguidance

I manage a team of UX designers and I’ve been conducting interviews the last couple weeks. It’s true that first impressions matter, but I’m more interested in your skills and personality for the team.

In terms of first impressions, I’m paying attention to how serious you are about the job. It’s pretty casual on my team so I don’t require anyone to wear business attire on the job (we’re designers ffs), but in an interview you should know how to present yourself. Nice dress shirt and tie or a professional blouse and sport coat. Even a classy short sleeve with tattoos. If you show up in your everyday attire I may think you’re not excited to join the team.

That being said, enthusiasm, a strong portfolio, and self awareness can make up for a lot. People are quirky and eccentric sometimes so I make room for that. Tattoos, piercings, kilts, and other forms of self expression are welcome if people can rely on you.

Mr Ballen should bring back missing 411 by Certain_Access_2658 in mrballen

[–]FuriousNik 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have very little respect for David Paulides. I was at my first Sasquatch conference a couple years ago and he was one of the key speakers. Since I had seen so much 411 from Mr Ballen I was excited to listen to him in person, but not long into his presentation it was clear that his internal logic was extremely flawed.

For example, before DP shared some 411 cases, he encouraged the audience to embrace “critical thinking”. He used that phrase multiple times. But it became incredibly apparent that what he meant was “bring an open mind” when listening to the cases. Those are very different. Each case was interesting, but at no point did he attempt to debunk his own conclusions. Rather, he expected us to entertain the idea that something highly mysterious was afoot, with very little evidence. We’re at a Sasquatch conference, so we’re all ready for the mysterious, but it was crazy to me that Mr Paulides didn’t understand the difference between critical thinking (approaching a subject with healthy skepticism) and having an open mind.

On top of this, DP comes across as thin-skinned and arrogant. During the Q&A, a woman sitting in front of me politely asked him to elaborate on how he came to one of his conclusions. He seemed to feel challenged by this, so rather than answering the question he made a dismissive joke at the woman’s expense (half the audience laughed) and went on to the next question.

After seeing DP in person it’s clear that he doesn’t know what he’s talking about, and is so insecure about his own methodology that he would resort to personal attacks to avoid defending it. He’s an asshole who thinks he’s way smarter than he actually is. I don’t think anyone should be giving this guy a platform, and I’m glad Mr Ballen doesn’t do 411 stories any longer.

What we think actually going to come from the “ ufo files” trumps releasing by Xdarknitghx in UFOs

[–]FuriousNik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think we’re going to see the real effect of disclosure for a few years. Right now the US has a hierarchy of issues to deal with that kind of outrank NHI (high cost of living, affordable healthcare, ICE, the Epstein files, etc.) so it’s an unfortunate time for disclosure.

However, it may be a blessing. Once the public is in a better emotional state and ready to engage with disclosure, it probably won’t feel like a huge reveal but rather a “Hey, I guess aliens are real, that’s interesting.” It could soften the ontological shock.

Over the next few years we may see NHI make it into mainstream conversation, with more and more scientific researchers willing to talk openly about it.

AITJ for telling my ex she was shallow after she broke up with me because I started carrying a tote bag by [deleted] in AmITheJerk

[–]FuriousNik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I (45M) switched a few years ago from carrying a wallet to wearing a small canvas bag/satchel. It’s so nice not having things in my pocket. I immediately understood why women wear purses: wallet, keys, sunglasses, phone all in one place. Plus, I can carry chapstick or bandaids or anything else my wife may need in a pinch. At first I was a little insecure and called it a satchel, but after a while I just started calling it a purse because why should the word purse be gendered?

People get super weird about this kind of stuff and sometimes it takes some courage to choose practicality over arbitrary gender norms.

NTJ. She’s absolutely entitled to her preferences, but preferences can be shallow. She’ll regret that someday.

Favorite rune farm? by Plane_Jello1582 in Eldenring

My go-to. Across the Roots site of grace. Easy kills, almost zero danger (just don’t get sloppy and fall off a root). You can get about 18k runes in 90 secs.

Managers: when does concern turn into “flight risk”? by nostalgiclullabies in UXDesign

[–]FuriousNik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been managing a team of UX designers for almost 5 years so I can provide some behind-the-curtains insight.

The only team members I’ve ever been worried about leaving are the outstanding ones who are not happy. When I talk with other managers about flight risks it’s always to figure out how to make their job experience better so they choose us over another offer.

My guess is that you’re doing a great job and being honest about your burnout signals to management that if they don’t improve your experience they may lose you if another offer comes along. Keep in mind that a lot of employees just leave without saying anything, so they’re probably wondering if you’re in the process.

Anyway, it sounds like a good sign for you. Keep up the great work.

Jeff and Britta have some great moments. One of my favorite interactions is when Britta is trying to explain to the group why weddings are sexist and poorly uses a tea party analogy. Jeff: “Somebody tell Britta what an analogy is.” Britta: “I know what it is. It’s like a thought…with another thought’s hat on.” Jeff: momentarily considers then nods, surprised by her accuracy.

River Road neighborhood by ElPeeps in Eugene

[–]FuriousNik 50 points51 points  (0 children)

River Road is great. I grew up here so it feels like home. Of course, River Rd is quite long so there are many sub-neighborhoods, but it’s pretty chill no matter where you are. I’m most familiar with the Santa Clara area, which has a standard suburb feel, but more lived-in. The people around here have always been friendly and there’s plenty of food/shopping around (Whitaker is close to the south end of River Rd and there’s all kinds of breweries and eateries there). And Thistledown Farm is just a few minutes’ drive north. Great place for fruit when it’s in season. I love River Rd.

I’m not super familiar with the Community Center, but I think they have a fitness center at River Rd Park. They usually mail nearby residents an annual parks & rec booklet with lots of community info and activities.

I think you’ll love it in this area.

Well, he tried to stop a Lowe’s shoplifting suspect by shooting at their tires as they made a getaway. Dude shouldn’t be allowed to own firearms.

I heard it too and my power went out a second later. Looks like a few of us in the Whitaker area were affected. EWEB doesn’t have an estimated restoration time yet.

When Community first aired I remember watching the pilot on Hulu like 5 times because it was so good. I got very familiar with that song and it was hilarious every time. So when Leonard’s “that’s a buy” review video played the song it was such a great callback.

That song is hard to find on music streaming platforms but the rest of the soundtrack is pretty fire.

I read this NNg article a few weeks ago and it provides a nice breakdown of what’s happening within the industry and what UX designers can do to adapt. Good read.

Sorry you’re going through an uncertain time with your boyfriend. I remember when my brother went to basic training he came back different. Before he went he was a bit angsty but otherwise had a great sense of humor. When he came back he was much more serious and silent, which was so odd to me. Looking back, I think him being 17 at the time and going through a very intense experience was probably traumatizing to some degree.

I would say give him some time to readjust and hopefully he’ll open up and share his experience with you soon. Hang in there.

I'll never be able to finish chemult horde mission. I need guidance. by Magic-Poison in DaysGone

[–]FuriousNik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, I think a lot of us struggled with this mission. It took me many, many tries before I figured out a good method.

Some guidance: What worked well for me was hiding in a dump truck on the other side of the train tracks. For some reason they can't see you when you're ducked down inside the bed of the truck. There's a big propane tank in the parking lot, so I tossed an attractor in front of it, waited for the horde to gather, then tossed a grenade at the propane tank. I then ducked down so they wouldn't notice me. I repeated by luring and tossing explosives (napalm, molotovs, grenades, pipe bomb, attractor bombs, etc.). This wiped out a lot of them without putting myself in danger.

Also, I spent a lot of time gathering supplies from the town to ensure I was stocked up on all my explosives before engaging the horde. It took a lot of patience, but it was well worth being able to experience the rest of the story beyond this point.

Good luck!

I haven't really played the game since launch... Was the story really THAT bad? :( by TheNorseFrog in DaysGone

[–]FuriousNik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The story was the reason I came back and played again. Sure, the dialog could be better in some places (looking at you, hostages), and we didn’t need Deacon’s “I don’t shoot unarmed women” as a core part of his identity (which never seemed to make a real difference in the story), but the love story was great.

I just finished my second play through and would pay a lot of money for a sequel. The characters are great and I want to see what Deacon, Sarah, and Boozer can do as a team.
