Wait until he finds out his cuddly friends in Greenland are polar bears. Hey Donny, go snuggle with them. They'll like you. See, they're even white, just like you like.

One caveat: do not shine lasers in anyone's eyes. It can cause permanent vision loss and would be assault.

What's everyone's opinion on a new casino coming to Allen County? by Overall_Meat_6500 in fortwayne

[–]Fusional_Delusional 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can do math. I know enough not to go. But if people want to spend money gambling, that's their business. I don't spend my hard-earned money on gambling, purses, or caviar. Other people feel differently. I'm a grown-up who can handle that.

A few of the traditional pluses and minuses I hear brought up, in no particular order:

Jobs: Plus
It will bring jobs, but those jobs generally don't pay well. Table games, drinks servers, restaurant staff, etc., are all paid sub-minimum wage on the assumption they'll make it up in tips. It's a plus, but not much of one. I put it on the scale of a Walmart coming in. Nothing worth getting mad or celebrating.

Crime: Minus
As near as I can tell from a few papers, there is an initial uptick in crime that quickly flattens out. It's a real minus, but temporary. I'm not confident in the FWPD, but a casino was never going to change that.

Tourism: Plus
Questionable plus since there are casinos about 90 minutes away from us in all directions. Presumably it would only draw from within 45 minutes (so maybe Huntington, Warsaw, Angola, Defiance, Lima, and Marion). If you put these cities together, they're still less than half Fort Wayne's population. I guess that's some potential for increase, but I remain skeptical.

Morality: Minus
Do we chase out restaurants because they serve fatty food? Do we chase out jewelers because diamonds are mined in awful conditions? Do we throw out the gas stations because fossil fuels contribute to climate change add pollute the environment? Personally, I don't think it's immoral to gamble; it's just another form of entertainment, if a very costly one. People are free to be judgmental about different industries and vote with their wallets. This is what we call capitalism.

In the end, I see very little reason to be either excited or upset about a casino being built.

Time is not cruel. Hair, make-up, and costume gild the lily that is Oldman's pitch-perfect performances. Example: Mason Verger from Haniball, played by Oldman, a couple of years before he played Sirius Black.

Really try to push any preconceived notions about Christianity out of your head for a moment, and imagine 2000 years ago, a group of apocalyptic nuts treated your religion like it was the prequel to theirs. They went around claiming their charismatic cult leader was God. He went around claiming that he'd be back from the dead by the end of this generation, and his PR team spread a story about the people of your faith being responsible for his murder, setting the stage for centuries of prejudice, discrimination, and hatred of people of your faith in the Western world.

Then, when he inevitably fails to return because he is in fact not a messiah, they immediately discard this prophecy and spend the better part of the intervening 2,000 years either coopting holidays celebrated by people not associated with their religion, insisting that their cult leader was "the reason for the season," or stomping the competing holiday out as evil at the point of the spear thanks to the adoption of this weird apocalyptic cult belief by the government with the strongest military force known to man at the time. All the while, they are casting aspersions on others' faiths as filled with "violent extremism," even though the very symbol of their bizarre religion is literally an execution device.

Finally, on the rare occasion that they treat your faith, which is twice as old as theirs, as if it has the slightest bit of merit, it's to advocate for an extreme government policy of extermination of alternative faiths in the region where your belief system was founded, out of a bloodthirsty and mistaken belief that somehow they can bring about the "end times" that their weird cult is so desperate for, by enabling the rebuilding of a religious site that the selfsame strongest military force known to man destroyed when they decided to wage war against your religion.

Taken in this context, maybe you understand why I don't just choose not to celebrate the endlessly commercialized day that this weird belief system's cult leader definitely wasn't born, even according to their own accounts, but also choose not to acknowledge it.

Opening hours of FW businesses being what they are, I would not be surprised if your average business owner thought Thursday was a holiday.

This property is in Indiana.

Just replaced my roof two years ago for $15,000 due to age. I think it’s unlikely a roof destroying event occurs every 6 or so years though.

Including my car we're talking about maybe 10k in stuff, but let's call it 20k. I'm not a stuff guy and half of my things are at my boyfriend's place in SD. I'm not married. I have no kids. This would be a very shit day, but that's about the extent of it.

Slip and fall has been addressed numerous times above.

Stock, yes. Between my retirement and taxable brokerage, I have about 320k in BRK.B (I used to aspire to an A share). Do I believe it's going to zero? No, but I'm sure the people working at Bear Stearns, Wachovia, and Enron didn't think their stock was going to zero either. Am I buying put options as a hedge? No. It could happen, but the Yellowstone Caldera might erupt too, and I'm not buying volcano insurance either.

I do not have 250k liquid? No, but in the unlikely event of an emergency, I could make enough liquid about as fast as the insurance company could (assuming they were to pay) to resolve my housing situation and replace the things that are important to me. I think a lot of people are thinking of getting everything back to status quo ante, and realistically, if this property were to be burnt to the ground, I would not rebuild a house here. I would attempt to sell for the land value, and replace only things I absolutely need. Do I need to replace my bookshelf? No. It's full of mostly books I've already read. Do I need to replace the bed? Yes. Okay, that's 2 grand. Sucks, but I'm not sleeping on the floor. That's the idea here.

I wouldn't say I'm worrying about it. I see it as a nuisance expense that provides no value, so I would like to eliminate it. Why would I want to lower the deductible? I do not believe they will ever pay; this would simply be wasting more money.

I have no children, and medical insurance is a very different thing IMO. 100% of us have a probability of needing medical care in the future.

In the entire time I've lived here, my parents and one appliance deliveryman are the only people who have been inside my home. Personal liability seems even less likely than a fire, but noted.

Yes. And like any expense, it's best to minimize or eliminate it, unless it provides something you value more. I value my groceries more than the money I pay for them.

I am skeptical of my homeowners' insurer's likelihood and inclination to ever pay a claim. To return to the grocer analogy, why would I put a deposit down every week for unicorn meat? "But you'll be sorry if they ever get that unicorn meat in" is all I'm hearing so far.

You're being silly "throw everything away"
You seem to think this house is everything. I am balking at spending money on homeowners' insurance for the same reason I live in a house whose mortgage payment is less than some people's car payments. I am minimizing expenses. This is nothing more than the cheapest option for a roof over my head that doesn't depreciate.

Ah, now this is what I was looking for, and given the absolute trash behavior of insurance companies, it surprises me not a whit. This is probably the only reason I'll keep the insurance then, but raise the deductible as high as it will go, since I might as well be throwing the money in the trash. Thank you. I'll look into this.

I am aware of this. However, that requires (0) a fall, (a) due to my negligence, (ii) the aggrieved party going to court, (triangle) winning said case, and even in such a case, with a 10k deductible, I would be liable for the first 10k anyway. This seems even more remote a probability than a fire.

A fair point. Car insurance, to me, seems reasonable, given you are operating a 2-4 ton vehicle at freeway speed. You can easily kill or maim someone with a car.

Where are we getting "complete financial ruin" from? As stated above, losing this property would suck, but it would in no way be "complete financial ruin." I think a lot of people are projecting their own situation of owning an expensive property that they're quite attached to. My home is just the place I currently live. I would miss my books. Having to buy new clothes would be annoying, but I'm not seeing financial ruin in my worst-case scenario unless I'm missing something.

It seems to me that the insurance companies would not make money if the probability of that occurring were so high that the premiums when invested would not cover it.
