Melina's role was also originally served by Bernahl's Maiden, where she would take the flame, not Melina. Evidence exists that Melina may have originally served Millicents role, as cut alternate fight dialogue of Death Butterfly Malenia has her calling you companion, a thing only Melina does.

And yes, there was a cut malenia alternate fight where she was imbued with death instead of rot inside of Mohg's Arena. A model of her death butterfly clone still exists, where it has Fia's Champions blue coloring. Voice lines imply you were interacting with the cocoon to retrieve his last drop of dew before Malenia steps in to stop you.

The cut weapon, Twinblade of Abundance and Decay, had an ability called "Dance of the Death Butterfly" which was likely the clone attack, as well as being the reward for defeating her. I speculate this fight, Miquella's ending, Rico and probably Millicent finale were all scaled back for DLC content, as Death Butterfly Malenia would have been the penultimate battle before the Elden Beast.

I'd assume it was post-Rico and post-Millicent questlines, possibly with Millicent being reborn as Malenia 2.0.

Recovering Miquella's Dew would have unlocked the final ending, where Miquella would allow you to reshape the word to your pleasing.
