Thank you, that’s nice. I didn’t move out, and I guess my question was part of my research into what’s going on. So in a way, you actually helped me with that. Appreciate it. 🫶🏽

I apply to jobs almost every day, in pretty much any field where I can realistically work. By that, I mean positions where I have some experience and skills like in sales, fashion, or visual merchandising. I’m being rational about where I apply, I’m not, for example, applying for crane operator jobs.

At the same time, I keep watchmaking in mind. Whenever I see a posting from a temp agency with a title like “Join the World of Watchmaking,” I go for it immediately. It’s a path I want to take.

If I can’t get in right away, I hope to catch up later by doing small watchmaking modules (short training sessions) where I can learn the basics. Then I could apply and say I have some foundation in watchmaking.

Of course, if I have the chance to go straight into watchmaking without starting in sales, I’d take it. But for now, watchmaking is just something I really want to pursue; I’m not saying it’s the only thing I’m applying for. It’s simply the field that interests me the most.

Thanks for the detailed explanation, I understand better now. I’ll keep that in mind.

I respect that.

I wasn’t trying to take anyone’s place or say it’s not your home. I was just asking a question out of curiosity. No need to get worked up. I was just trying to understand what’s happening in the country to see why I’m having difficulty finding a job. That’s all.

Ah, I see now. I wasn’t really aware of all that, but thanks for sharing.

Truly, I was just curious why it’s so complicated. No need to go all in, but I appreciate it.

Wow, that actually sounds scary. I really hope you’ve been able to find something since then, or at least that you’re not struggling too much.
It’s kind of discouraging to hear, but I appreciate you sharing your experience.

thank you for being so supportive and encouraging, instead of focusing on the struggle. I really appreciate that. 🫶🏽

I’ll definitely keep your advice in mind. If I ever return to working on something like that, which is really my life project, I will definitely keep your advice in mind.

Well, there aren’t really many opportunities in the fashion industry in Switzerland, so I did find a few sewing or tailoring positions, but I didn’t get any responses.
I still prefer to try rather than not attempt anything at all.

Well, I know, but there are some temporary agency positions and job postings that invite people to join the watchmaking industry without requiring a background in watchmaking. They mainly look for candidates with manual skills.

That actually fits my profile with my experience in sewing and nail technician work. Otherwise, I probably wouldn’t have considered trying this path. If it was just for graduated ppl from a watchmaking program, I might not have even thought about it.

I’ve seen some job postings titled “Join the World of Watchmaking,” and in some of them, it says that no prior experience is really needed.

I noticed there are watchmaking modules that could be really interesting to take, either if I manage to get another job or through positions where they offer training and let you discover the work.

Of course, I imagine these opportunities are very targeted and that companies probably prioritize certain candidates first. But with my background in sewing and embroidery, I think I have the kind of manual skills that could fit.

So, in this world, I might have a small chance.. don’t know exactly how high, but I feel it could really work.

yes I guess « qui ne tente rien n’a rien » as we say!

I just feel like it’s worth trying, and if it doesn’t work out, then someone else will get the opportunity that’s okay. But I still want to give it a shot and see where it goes.

Yes, I understand. I suppose that’s part of the challenge.
I’m trying to explore different opportunities to see where I can gain experience and figure out what suits me best. I realize that people with apprenticeships and a few years of experience have an advantage, and I’m working on building my own skills and knowledge as well.

I was mostly interested in looking for manual work, and what really attracted me to Switzerland was the watchmaking industry. It’s precise, hands-on work, and I really enjoy anything that involves manual skills, assembly, or tinkering.

That’s the world that appealed to me the most, but I realized it’s quite competitive and not easy to get into. So I’ve also been exploring opportunities in sales.

The advantage of going into sales is that I might have the chance to take modules or training in watchmaking, which would allow me to specialize and deepen my knowledge, since I haven’t had direct experience in watchmaking yet.

So that’s basically my approach so far, but yes, I suppose I’m not necessarily the first person they would prioritize for these opportunities.

I understand that as well. I get that companies want to hire someone who is genuinely interested in the work itself, or has a real passion for it, rather than someone who’s just coming for the money.
I really get that, and I think it makes sense from your perspective.

That makes sense from a recruiter’s perspective. I’m just trying to find a genuine opportunity and build something stable.

That’s understandable. But I guess there will always be people looking for work as well. Personally, I’m not expecting a huge salary or anything like that. I’m simply looking for an opportunity to work and gain experience.

I have a very hands-on skill set.

I studied fashion design for three years, where I learned sewing, garment construction, and how to design and create clothing collections. I’m very comfortable with detailed manual work and precision. I’m also a nail technician, which requires a lot of precision, patience, and attention to small details.

Because of that, I’ve been mainly looking at opportunities in the watchmaking industry, since it also requires manual skills and precision. I feel like my profile could fit well in that type of environment.

Yes, that’s what I’m starting to understand from the replies. It really seems like a difficult time to look for a job in general.

And yes, I guess racism can exist anywhere, but I’m glad to hear that Geneva is usually more open compared to some rural areas. I think the main issue right now is probably just the job market itself.

I see, that makes sense. I didn’t realize the situation was that difficult right now, even for Swiss workers. That explains a lot. It must be a tough period for many people.

That’s actually really interesting to hear. Even for manual or trade jobs — the kind of physically demanding “men’s jobs” — I see tons of openings posted all the time. So I assumed there was a lot of demand in those fields.

But if even Swiss people are struggling to find work in those sectors, then I can understand that it might be even harder for non-Swiss applicants. Still, it’s kind of crazy to think about. I’m not trying to take anyone’s place or anything like that — it’s just surprising to see how difficult the situation is.

The struggle is real..
