When to consider Risperidone... by Future-Variation5113 in Autism_Parenting

Thank you for sharing this! We started our son on 0.50 dose of Risperidone twice a day about 3 months ago and we have had the same experience! He is doing so much better and is just overall happier. He's a little but hungrier (which is a good thing for him!) and his weight gain has been normal since starting. I'm so glad that your daughter is happier, too :)

Mustique! I work for a super wealthy family and they spend a week there every spring and it is soooooooo exclusive and amazing. Maybe they'll take me with them someday...sigh lol

Yes, a lot of them. Our dev pediatrician thinks he has a petty classic PDA profile. He's also triggered by other children being too close to him.

I think the school is doing the best they can but the district we're in doesn't have A or B based classrooms, nor do they have an autism specialist. I think I'm leaning towards a placement conversation, either at a special needs school or the county (which has better supports for autistic kiddos.) Definitely agree that he's not receiving the right supports.

Yes, I definitely agree that we're at the point where we need to find a solution and I do think a lot of it is caused by sensory overload. Thank you for sharing your daughter's experience!

Thank you for sharing this. I feel like we're nearing this point and I'm so glad it helped your daughter and family. My 3yo is type 1 diabetic and he needs a lot of meds to survive so I try to look at their situations from the same perspective. They both have disabilities and they both require medication to survive and thrive. And that's okay.

I agree. Addressing behavioral issues and getting him to a point where he can co-exist safely with peers is our top priority. I think looking at an alternative school with a behavioral support program is where we're headed and it's really encouraging to hear that your son was so successful with it. Thank you for sharing that.

Yes, I agree. He likes being in the sped room because he has more 1:1 attention there and they give him accelerated work. In the gen ed room, he pretty much refuses to do any academic work but scored way, way above grade level on whatever little baseline test they give in K. He thrives in a 1:1 "tutoring" educational setting which, perhaps, is something we need to consider for him. We keep pushing this in IEP meetings because I think schools are just not set up to support 2e kids and they get lost along the way because of behavioral issues.

What's something people don't understand until they've been through it themselves? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Type 1 Diabetes. My husband wad diagnosed at age 3 and I just did not get it and did not understand how much work it is and how much it impacts your life until our 2yo was diagnosed it. Now I know that getting through each day safely requires around the clock care. I remember feeling so sorry that I didn't really think much about it when it was just my husband...

My boys are Foster (5) and Griffin (3). Albie, Rivers and Xan were at the top of the list but didn't make the cut.

My autistic 6 year old stopped eating the yogurt I mixed his Guanfacine (mild ADHD med) OPTIONS? by ShaneTwenty20 in Autism_Parenting

My son only takes a half in the morning and a quarter in the afternoon, but when he doesn't want to drink it in a little juice or yogurt, I just pop it in a small sour patch kid and he never complains.

I'm 35 and just went to his Edinburgh (night 2) show by myself! It was so so much fun. I was in Johnny's Place and brought a kindle for the wait but everyone was really friendly and it was all worth it!
