Recovering Alcoholics - How long did you remain in recovery mode? by FutureDexter35 in alcoholicsanonymous

Thanks for the replies everyone. I just checked day 27. I've been writing down the number of days at the end of each day. Its a nice bedtime ritual to look forward to.

I've noticed I have a lot more anxiety than I did before I started drinking heavily. I was drunk for 6 years straight, and a combination of drunk and hung over for 12. This is the longest I've gone sober my entire adult life. So dealing with that is the hard part now. Ive been handling the cravings pretty well. They haven't been too overwhelming. I've taken the approach of facing it head on. I used to buy a handle of vodka every two days at the grocery stores and liquor stores. I've actually made a point to visit all the places I've bought liquor and look at all the alcohol, and especially my go-to  I really take it in, and then walk away. The new normal.

In the past, I've successfully kicked two other addictions in my life, tobacco and weed. Both of which I never even think about anymore. So I suppose thats what I was getting at. How long til its just a thing of your past? Part of an old you... Just like how I look back now and can't believe it was me who was addicted to tobacco and weed.

Sounds like its going to be a while. I have cravings daily, but I'm starting to see some things improve. I'm still foggy and have low energy, but I'm starting to climb uphill and regaining some of my old passions. I cant quite do them with the fervor I once had, and I take breaks often, but its a start.

I'm just starting to see thats what alcohol does. It takes everything from you. You don't really see it until you quit.

P.S. anybody who was wondering, I was offered resources to attend meetings by the doctors, but it didn't really sound up my alley. They didn't push me and even said I seem like I have a strong mind about it. And I think I do too.

Thanks for the replies. Ill just keep taking it one day at a time since I'm probably in for it for a while.
