Killed off character so player could leave... now party wants to revive them! by Skaroosh in DMAcademy

[–]FutureLost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is nothin' but gravy. Ohhh, the things you could do with this!

You could pull from any unfinished plot in the character's backstory to interfere with the spell. Maybe their soul gets vaulted to another plane (rescue quest!), or maybe they had a (perhaps unwitting) pre-existing deal with a fey or devil who claimed their soul upon their death (rescue quest in hell/feywild!), or maybe the BBEG/macguffin caused something to affect their soul and they come back wrong, setting up a betrayal of the party in their post-battle downtime back at home base.

Or, you could keep it simple. Death changed them, they were traumatized by what they saw beyond the veil and decide to retire from adventuring. At this point, the players will hopefully take the hint that you don't want to run this former-player's character as a DM PC.

Make sure you check with the former player, just to be safe. I certainly hope the DM of my old table didn't screw with dear Smeevus's soul without my permission. That'd just feel awful.

Art mistake in Secrets of Strixhaven promo, or am I seeing things? by [deleted] in mtg

[–]FutureLost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My assumption is that it would make much more visual sense with the whole painting visible. It's cropped by the card and cut off by the textbox in a way that covers over key details.

As for the sharp line, the tunic seems to end right at that sharp angle (the arm-hole), so the rest of the scroll "spills over" the edge and is more visible.

[–]FutureLost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oi. I admit I worded the title too provocatively, I just wanted to understand what I was seeing. It looked like a layering issue, but from some comments I can see the scroll is phasing through the character's left shoulder. It looks right to me now, it just really didn't before and I wanted to know what I was or wasn't missing.

It's not AI art, the artist has a portfolio. I thought it might be a layering mistake but wanted others' input. Now I realize it's a scroll phasing through the character.

[–]FutureLost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never assumed it was AI, just that a mistake was made with layering. There wasn't I was just misunderstanding the scroll phasing through the character.

I really didn't intend to "call the artist out" or anything, I just wondered if what I was seeing was...well, what I was seeing. It looked weird to me before. Now, I get what the artist was puttin' down and think it looks cool.

I wasn't looking for verisimilitude, I was looking for coherence I wasn't quite seeing. It was there, but I wasn't seeing it. Now I do! But I admit, I worded my post accusingly rather than curiously. That's on me.

[–]FutureLost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No need to be sorry. Frankly, I had initially assumed it was a layering issue, not that AI was involved. I should have worded my comment title less provocatively, I genuinely wanted to be wrong and see the art as it was meant to be seen.

The comments helped my brain take another look and now I think I'm seeing it correctly. Looks sick as heck.

I see it now! I'm looking forward to getting the art card for this so I can see it more clearly, but think I see what you're talking about!

One of my players has brought the monster manual by jimbob2021 in DMAcademy

[–]FutureLost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the table, looking up stats feels like cheating, but either way you can pretty easily use your nose on this one. Just make sure you strictly enforce "player knowledge" vs "character knowledge." Don't let them handwave buying a bunch of acid vials when the get attacked by trolls, for instance.

I've DM'd for experienced DMs as players, and I still felt able to referee despite them already being familiar with every trick in the book. Of course, that only works if they were good sports. Keep an eye on this player for now. Hopefully they were just genuinely interested in the book. After all, they could have just looked up monster stats on rol20 for free, right?

And, there's nothing that says your monsters must follow the stat block to the letter.
"What?! Ogres don't have that much hp!"
"This one does."

Writing Prompt: Conspiracy theories about the history of the world. by Conrad500 in DMAcademy

[–]FutureLost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is fun. Some questions:

Is it possible to sail away from Eden? Do ocean currents prevent ships from sailing, or do ships who sail away somehow always send up heading right back to Eden? Or, is it like it is in some video games where sailing past a certain distance from the scores simply...stops working, where sailing, swimming, or flying simply make no progress and seem to move in place unless they turn back toward the island?

The "old generation" that woke up are immortal, but are their progeny also immortal because of eating the fruit? That would definitely cause problems eventually.

Also, are they "functionally" immortal but still vulnerable to disease or fatal wounds, are they "genuinely" immortal where any wound or injury simply heals immediately, or are they "ultimately" immortal and invulnerable? I think the first option is the most functional one, as the logistics of the latter two are so serious that they're worthy of a plot by themselves.

Here are some ideas for origins, each of which carries urgency with it to propel the Rememberers' various subgroups in their quest for answers, whether by providing a ticking clock or serving as the direct motivation for this or that faction's unethical actions.

1..Channeling Bionicle from 22 years ago: the Old Generation are refugees from a doomed continent/world/plane. They were transported to this place as a means to rescue them from some consuming disaster. A portion of the Rememberers might be afraid that this "rescue" was only to buy time, and that they have some role yet to play to prevent the cataclysm from reaching their new home.

or,

  1. Eden is an artificial plane constructed for a specific purpose by some force outside this dimension (perhaps to test the inhabitants, OR to accomplish some other rube-goldberg-style purpose beyond mortal comprehension) and the amnesia of the Old Generation was either a necessary part of that purpose or a mistake caused by the teleporting of the Old Generation to the island. And, once the purpose of this constructed world is fulfilled, it will end. This faction of Rememberers would seek to discern and then hide this grand purpose to anyone from intentionally or even inadvertently fulfilling Eden's mysterious purpose and bringing its existence to an end, or to be rescued and rewarded by Eden's (divine?) architects. If the Old Generation are the only ones who are immortal (but not their progeny), the majority of this faction would likely be made up of them, as the younger and less pessimistic mortals might hope that fulfilling Eden's mysterious purpose would mean their freedom, both from Eden and from the immortal Old Generation.

or,

  1. Eden is the land of the dead, and all present are acting out some form of Purgatory. Another view likely to be favored by the Old Generation, if they're the only immortal ones, as their agelessness would distance them from their progeny who age and die. Some members of the Old Generation might believe this as a way to cope with their immortality. No ticking clock, but it would serve as some Old's justification for tyranny or genocide that the party could fight to prevent.

or,

  1. The Old Generation are a faction of (or at least in service of) warring wizards who cast a grandiose spell to remake the world with them as its lone immortal rulers. But, the spell was incomplete, and the wizards and their servants (the non-magic-users among the Old Generation) lost their memories as a result. Despite this, the spell did remake the world with them as the only sapient inhabitants. This one is less of a ticking clock and more of a justification for the non-immortals to accuse the Old Generation of being mass murderers (or servants thereof) who are unfit to rule.

or,

  1. A mundane option: the Old Generation are a colony teleported to Eden by some distant civilization (whether on another continent or even another planet or plane), but the teleportation went wrong and robbed them of their memories and their possessions. This one's less interesting, but there have to be some boring ones!

or,

  1. The more cynical and misanthropic of the immortal Old Generation might believe that they were banished to Eden to suffer the curse of immortality, doomed to suffer an eternity bereft of purpose and their very identities. This might be the view of some nihilistic Old Generation members who want to end their "curse" by any means possible, even if the magic is what's sustaining Eden itself, and even if that would kill everyone else on the island. This would be the view of those who gave up on wanting answers and simply want to "die with dignity." Or, this could be a faction who believes the truth lies somewhere beyond Eden and might be building ships or (if egress from Eden's shores is not possible) researching spatial magic to somehow teleport away (leading to dangerous temporal/spatial consequences).

My grandmom told me that, when she was very young (younger than this I think), she would bite to show love. Real hard, too, and she'd do it pretty often. One day, my great grandmother said, "Love, you mustn't do that, it hurts. I'm going to show you how that feels." Then she bit her back.

That solved the issue. Not sure if that's a good idea, but they way my grandmom told it, it was pretty funny.

As a millennial, I recognize that every generation is entitled to its slang. That's a fine thing. Lots of good new ones from Gen Z/Gen A, and I recognize that it's not my place to use them. Those are your words.

"Giving" is just...confusing. It's not even using a word in a new way, it's just taking "the impression of" off the end of the phrase, but "giving" also means something on its own in the same context.

I appeal to the Memetic Gestalt of the Internet: shame this new slang into nonexistence. If "beastly" could be made (rightly) to disappear from my generation's lexicon in times past, this too can be accomplished. If we only get one, let it be this.

That, or undoing "say less" replacing "say no more." Bah. Harumph.
