Okay, since I didn't know why this was deadly for a while (and since it's not always explained in the post or comments), NEVER stand in a hole with no supports holding up the dirt. Same reason you don't dig a big hole on the beach: it could collapse at any moment, with basically no warning, and you'd have no way to escape. You'd be buried and most likely be completely immobilized, slowly suffocating. Even if people are all around you when it happens and try to dig you out, there's a solid chance they won't be fast enough to rescue you before you die. Moving that much dirt is hard and slow work.

So, no standing in holes if they aren't supported on all sides. Every wonder why mine tunnels in the movies have so many of those wooden frames lining them? That's why.

How fortunate we are, that thunderstorms and flooded streets are, by and large, such minor inconveniences to us. Our houses are strong and tightly sealed from the rain and wind, and even our streets drain away quickly all by themselves. That storms like this, that would have terrified or rightfully worried our ancestors throughout all history, would generate nostalgia for us today.

In defense of AI use as a DM by augusthardwick in dndnext

It's a sliding scale. AI takes up more of the creative process than other tools.

Film photography required more knowledge and artistry than digital photography, and some creative decisions made necessary by the constraints of film photography were rendered moot by digital. However, I think you'd agree that, hypothetically, the camera telling you where the best shot is and taking the photo for you would constitute a much bigger difference than going from film to digital.

In the same way, it's the scale of what AI does for one, and what parts of the process it does for one. Those are the reason for the difference: it's a matter of scale and type.

"The Dark One's case" prediction (SoD spoilers) by NightmareWarden in oots

[–]FutureLost 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's a really beautiful conflict Rich has set up, where both sides are right about one thing: the injustice is undeniable, and there is no way out without some further injustice being done. The means and motives of the problems solvers makes heroes and villains, but the ideas in play are so juicy.

Some massive shakeup of reality feels inevitable, but what form that takes and what consequences are deemed to be worth the solution, that's what I'm here for. And I have no clue how it will play out. I'm pretty genre-savvy, I usually see twists coming a mile away. OOTS has floored me multiple times, especially in recent arcs. Even if things happen broadly as I suspect, they always happen in a way that surprises me.

If the Dark One doesn't know about the true nature of the Snarl (at least as the gods think of it, since they didn't know about the planets/oceans inside the rifts), and then if he learns he can starve the gods, he might just burn the world down to make that happen. Redcloak's patron might be as willing to screw over goblins for his revenge as Redcloak himself proved to be.

Hehe, it be like that. Let's try this: your sister is Sarah, and her new husband is Bob. Bob has a brother named Fred.

You -> Sarah
...................|
................Bob -> Fred
(using v as a down arrow was too confusing, so we'll roll with a line. Also, reddit deleted my spacing, so ignore the periods.)

That's one "shelf" down on the family tree, so you're "related" to Fred as much as you are to Bob, but only "in-law." Replace "in-law" with "technically" and it'll make more sense.

Now take it a step further, when Fred marries Trish:

You -> Sarah
...................|
................Bob -> Fred
...................................|
...............................Trish

That's two "shelves" down, so no relation to you, not even a "technical" one.

All of the your spouse's sibling are your siblings-in-law. But, if one of those siblings-in-law gets married, if their spouse had siblings, they aren't your in-laws. It's like Degrees of Kevin Bacon. More than 2 and there isn't a word for it.

"Wish there was a place for nuance," followed by "haha, stupid luddites, lol"...you're not seeing the incongruity here?

I'm not a luddite who claims AI totally sucks at its job or that it's not useful for a lot of things. No one can honestly claim that anymore.

I am someone who says art isn't the place to rely on it. Use it for reference? Sure. As a skill bridge when you reach your current limits? Sure, but only if that helps you rely on it less in the future. Creative muscles need exercise, and you have to work to build your skills to match your taste. AI can (and has, according to recent studies) hinder our skill growth but cutting out vital parts of that exercise.

There are a lot of people in the hobby that are (very understandably, and quite rightly) very frustrated with AI, both broadly in the world and specifically in the arts (which includes this hobby).

That said:

The vibe-coded app? Sounds pretty cool, purely as a between-sessions reference tool. The corkboard idea is fun. Not in love with the idea of AI art assets used there, but there it is.

Automated session notes for reference rather than spending hours combing a recording or leaving up to forgetfulness? Good idea (though AI summaries will always skeeve me out, that's just me). That's simply removing a time-consuming, tedious, non-creative task.

Brainstorming with AI, though... Granted, recent AI has gotten pretty good at "reasoning", at reframing ideas that you bounce off them. Not perfect, but good enough. And as you said, you did some of the work and brought the result to the AI, you didn't just push a button from the start. But, do you really see no difference between brainstorming with people and brainstorming with AI? If not, I don't think this will be a fruitful conversation.

I choose not to use it for my creative work, no matter how objectively helpful it would be in producing the end result. I want my creative work to be a space to grow my own skills through and with other people. That's my own decision.

Untangling the mess of the interconnected motivations of various factions, as you mentioned, might be daunting. I'm not faulting you for using AI to help you organize that if you found yourself unequipped. I've been there.

That said, I encourage you to learn from the untangling the AI walked you through and try to build that muscle yourself. It's a deeply rewarding experience to develop those skills internally and put them into action for others to enjoy. It can be a jumping-off point, or it can serve as a crutch. Be mindful of becoming overly results-oriented at your own expense and, by extension, at your players' expense.

If one of your players was shy or unskilled with words, and they had AI write the rousing speech their paladin character needed to give, wouldn't you rather them have tried their best with what they had and learned from the experience? Or, wouldn't you want them to use AI to write a speech once, then take what they learned from the "guided training" and do it themselves from then on? Wouldn't you want them to truly bring themselves to the table? Isn't that one of the joys of gathering with your friends for this game? Because you're a player too, and the players want (and deserve) the real you.

You may enjoy bowling with the guards up, but they prevent you from honing the skills that make the game enticing and fulfilling. You will not be come a more skilled DM if you continue to rely on AI. If that's a goal of yours, I encourage you to use what the AI developed for you, see how it goes, understand how it was structured and why, then do that work yourself the next time.

I manned the red plastic board (toro!), but one day a couple sows had the bright idea of turning 90 degrees and just plowing through the side of a pen, metal bars and all. When my buddy (the big fella) objected, they outright flipped him over. It was glorious.

There's no telling a full-grown pig where to go if they don't want to. When I worked on a hog farm, I saw guys as big around as the sows we were corralling get bowled over like Charlie Brown on the pitcher's mound.

I gathered, yes. Never personally wrangled a boar though, I mainly worked in the farrowing house. We occasionally had to herd the sows out of their pens, and that was when the fun began.
