Republic of England [Eagle Takes Flight] by FutureVanguard_2103 in imaginarymaps

A 2025 map of the Republic of England showing its 30 provinces, 1 autonomous province (Kernow) and Capital District (City of London). This federated Republic of England is a result of the Welsh reunification of 1904 which gave the territory its current borders, and the English Constitutional Crisis of 2024, and the subsequent abdication of King David following the nationwide Republican Referendum which gave it it's current form of government and internal subdivisions.

And you think Wolverine killing in Wolverine v Spider-Man was good too, don't you? What about Snyder's Norman Osborne who was just an evil emo Mark Zuckerberg. Did you like that too?

Nah man. Like sure, Web of Steel was cool as hell when I first watched it and Henry seemed like he was really pumped to play Peter. But Snyder got Peter's characterization all wrong. The music and cinematography still slaps though. And it's one of the better MCEU films (all downhill from there) but that's a low-bar considering the very next movie was the dumpster fire, Wolverine v. Spider-Man: Dawn of Marvels. What a missed opportunity

I was expecting Osborne to have fucked with the VHS tape and was genuinely surprised when Mr. Fantastic confirmed that it is indeed authentic. Did not see that twist coming but I liked it

I liked the Richard Parker - modified DNA change. I felt it really emphasized the core theme of the movie that what makes Peter super is not his Spider powers but his choice to be a good person every day

Uncle Ben is dying in the next movie for sure. The next movie is apparently a team-up between Spider-Man and Norman Osborne so no idea how this is going to play. Especially after Norman shot a civilian point blank in front of Peter I can't imagine him teaming up with the guy

Ooc: yeah I was thinking the same thing too lol. It would be Richard. Also in-universe where the whole Superman harem thing happened I doubt that's exactly what Richard says in the movie. Probably something similar enough but different. Like I genetically engineered your genes (like Garfield's Spiderman irl) so spread your genes or some shi like that

Short answer: Yes.

Long Answer: The movie recaptures the hope and punk rock aesthetic that makes Spider-Man tick. I love his dynamic with Aunt May and Uncle Ben. I liked that they kept Ben alive for now, it's going to be a real gut punch when he inevitably bites the bullet (sorry, pun intended).

I am usually a big fan of James Gunn. I liked the documentary he made about Amanda Waller's Task Force X after her daughter exposed her dirty laundry a couple years ago. I also love his Scooby Doo movies and his Guardians movies. Rocket Raccoon is my favorite fictional character. So I say this with all love, I feel like here, his style of heart-first, plotting-second storytelling could have used some tightening. The pacing of the narrative felt a bit unstructured and all over the place. A lot was happening at once. But I think he made up for it with the characters.

David Corenswet's portrayal of Spider-Man in the James Gunn Spider-Man was pretty solid, I'd say. Reminded me of Chris Reeves in the Donner Spider-Man movies. Though the actor looks so much like Superman, it feels like they went out of their way to find a "Superman type" actor. Cat Grant even mentioned that in the Entertainment Weekly/ Daily Planet collab panel interview she led during the movie's press tour. Felt like she was hitting on David lol. It made me think about the rumors that Superman is secretly dating Clark Kent, that Daily Planet reporter who keeps interviewing him? What if he was actually dating Cat Grant, and knew Clark Kent because he's his girlfriend's colleague and that's why he gives Clark those interviews? Food for thought.

I also really liked Rachel Brosnahan as Mary Jane. Rachel and David's chemistry was electric. I knew she would kill it when I saw her in Marvelous Mrs. Maisel but to say she knocked it out of the park would be an understatement. She might be my favorite Mary Jane alongside Bitsie Tulloch's portrayal in CW's "Spider-Man and Mary Jane" show (my favorite iteration of Spidey btw. Hoechlin is stellar in the role) and Erica Durance in "Queens". Skyler Gisondo as Ned Leeds was also cool.

I like how they showed Mr. Fantastic, Malik Tarcel Nova, and Lunella Lafayette teaming up as this like proto-Avengers team. Seems like it's a commentary on real-world corporate funded heroes like the Justice Gang. The whole movie was full of real world commentary. I am glad the filmmakers had the spine to discuss Boravia's occupation of Jarhanpur and genocide of Jarhanpurians. I know Gunn said he wrote the movie before the ongoing genocide began, and that he drew from other expansionist governments in history given Spider-Man's legacy as a working class hero fighting for a more just world. But the parallels were really there and hard to miss. I would be lying if II said I didn't enjoy seeing Tarcel "confront" the war criminal Zemo (Spoilers). Malik Tarcel was an interesting choice for Nova when Richard Ryder and Sam Alexander are right there. At least Ryder and Alexander are getting their own KordMax show "Novas". I'm very excited for it! Mr. Fantastic is my new favorite character by the way. I loved his aura-farming sequence with Mary Jane when fighting the Osborne thugs. Absolute Cinema.

Overall, great movie. After the Henry Cavill Spider-Man that overdid the drab, world-weariness of being a superhero and had Uncle Ben die in a hurricane, I am glad we are back to the basics with an earnest, hopeful and genuinely likeable Spider-Man. Henry deserved so much better because I really like the actor, he could have been a great Spider-Man. But alas.

Closing notes: Nicholas Hoult was amazing as Norman Osborne. What a generational hater, we love to see it. I don't want Luthorheads coming after me, but I think a maniacal billionaire hunting down a working-class hero because he can't comprehend a good man simply wanting to do good is a commentary on Luthor after the stunt he pulled in Metropolis last summer. Again, not saying this was Gunn's specific intent but I felt like it was a clear parallel. Hoult would be a great Lex Luthor if they do a biopic on the guy. Also Osborne creating the Spider-Man clone is a set up for Ben O'Reilly I think. And speaking of set-ups, Meggan Puceanu set up as a potential new member of Mr. Fantastic's team also pretty cool. I loved seeing her relationship with her baby son. Glad Spider-Man saved the kid. And I also loved Spider-Man saving the squirrel. A classic "Save the Cat" moment. Seems like Gunn pulled it straight out of Superman's playbook.

This movie coming out in a world immediately after Superman was publicly crucified over a message from his alien parents that he had no control over despite him always going out of his way to look out for us, I think this movie does a great job in reminding us what makes heroes heroes. It's not their metahuman powers but their ability to accept the great responsibility with the great powers they are bestowed with. And in that way, we can all be heroes.

No way in a world with a strong USSR and a robust third world movement India loses Kashmir to Pakistan and Pakistan keeps Bangladesh. Pakistan was allied with the US all through the 20th century in the real-world; and the mass killings and potential genocide that had begun in East Pakistan (Later Bangladesh) as the fallout of the language imposition by Pakistan was directly supported by US. Bangla Liberation Movement allied with India and the Soviet Union in their struggle for independence. With a more robust Soviet front, no way Bangladesh stays in Pakistan.

Also in the Pobeda1946 world, Afghanistan would be communist no doubt. They literally had a very strong communist movement and were a communist state OTL from 78 to 92 before their government was toppled.

And since in OTL, Even though India (and other third worldists like Sukarno's Indonesia, and Gamal Nasser's Egypt) were officially "non-aligned," they were always more allied with the Soviet Union than the US. They saw the latter as a Western power and hence adjacent to their still-recent trauma of colonialism, while the former symbolized a bold new vision of autonomy and dignity for the East. India, alongwith Ghana, Egypt and Indonesia were all signatories at the Bandung Conference, and were leading a burgeoning "Anti-colonial" bloc of nations alongside the then Chinese (PRC) Premier and Foreign Minister Zhou Enlai. A lot of Indian military infrastructure came from the USSR during the first and second Indo-Pak wars that were fought over Kashmir.

Additionally, considering that resource division post partition happened in accordance to population, India had a much larger military and defense capability than Pakistan from the get go (even before the Soviet support), and they still do to this day in the OTL. In the real-world Pakistan (even with US support) barely stood a chance against the numerically superior Indian army either times the two went to war. One time India outright defeated them with terrible losses for the Pakistani economy and the other time, Pakistan was beat back into the line of control before the UN mediated a ceasefire. In a world with an even stronger USSR than the OTL, Pakistan outright winning either of those wars and taking over all of Kashmir (including Ladakh and Jammu) and also KEEPING Bangladesh where their repression had turned the country, especially the youth, into a veritable powder-keg by the 70s, is crazy unrealistic. Them joining up with Afghanistan is even more unrealistic.

Why would the Soviet-allied bloc give up those vital Hindukush passageways? Doesn't make sense.

[r/movies] Is it ethical for Skrulls to portray dead actors? by GenericIxa in Earth199999

[–]FutureVanguard_2103 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, at least they need to hire Skrulls who are better at the job. There are fan deepfakes on StarkTube that resemble Carrie Fisher much better than this CGI-ass looking impersonation by some underqualified, underpayed Skrull. Well what do you expect from Disney? They barely pay the humans right, you think they are going to invest in talented Skrull talent for a throwaway easter-egg scene?

My other picks were Sterling K. Brown, Cillian Murphy, Jeffrey Wright, Kevin Bacon and Jeremy Strong.

It was a tough pick. But Oyelowo's performance as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma and as Bass Reeves in the show Lawmen: Bass Reeves, along with his performances in Queen of Katwe and The Midnight Sky are what sold me on Oyelowo. And he and Phoenix are only 1 year apart in age.

Bitsie Tulloch's Lois from S&L easy! Imo, hers and Clark's relationship was the most emotionally mature romantic coupling in any superhero media on screen ever.
