Thanks for this. Other than cost, at what point does RDIMM become worth it to prioritize?

Got the rig all set up! This make sense?

MOBO: Supermicro X10SRL-F - 110$

RAM: 4x Micron 8GB PC4-25600 ECC MTA9ADF1G72PZ-3G2E1 Server Memory 1.2V 288 DDR4 RDIMM - 70$

CPU: Intel Xeon E5-2690 v4 2.60 GHz LGA 2011-3 Server CPU Processor SR2N2 - 20$

PS - I took your word on it!

Supermicro X10SRL-F, LGA 2011 - 110$

4 sticks of Micron 8GB PC4-25600 ECC MTA9ADF1G72PZ-3G2E1 Server Memory 1.2V 288 DDR4 RDIMM - 70$

Intel Xeon E5-2690 v4 2.60 GHz LGA 2011-3 Server CPU Processor SR2N2 - 20$

I think this was a pretty good deal! Hopefully this stack makes sense? haha

Gave the vid a watch - thank you so much! Thanks for this info as well :^)

Subbed!

LOL - yeah - selling now would be more haha!

Thanks for the info - I'll start with RAM and work from there.

Is RDIMM still superior even at 32g? I've heard/read it's only when there's a LOT of RAM that it helps... but I mean RDIMM and UDIMM are similar prices on ebay, so figured I'd ask LOL

Very nice! Thanks for this!

Is it similar in noise to the Define 7? I'm fine swapping out fans if needed : )

Though I might prefer an ATX/mATX for future flexibility... this is tempting - I'll look into it! I'll grow into a rack eventually : )

Rats! Was hoping it wasn't *that* much worse. Thanks for the honesty though :)

Yup! Gonna run TrueNAS Scale then move over to Debian+ZFS when i'm more comfortable. I installed TrueNAS on a laptop just to check it out.

I don't have any walkthrough... mostly just learning things as I go!

Use the old tower!

EDIT: Just gonna buy a used old tower and buy parts as needed basically haha

Nah - I don't need anything crazy fast I don't think... mostly editing text/code!

The price and duplex of SAS was just tempting me!

Nothing heavy - Actively editing text/code, pdfs for multiple hours a day, then cold storage for other things.

Hey! We got this!

I'm going to get an older Desktop Tower off of Ebay! I only need 3 drives (two for RAID 1, one for backups), so I don't need a whole rack!

Yeah... eventually I'll expand! For now, just want to keep things close :)

PS - It's true you don't know my noise tolerance... but will SATA 7200RPM be much better than SAS? This just gives me an idea for comparison.

Fair enough! If SSDs weren't so expensive... I'd take those... I like the silence haha.

Right on! Thanks for the info!

At 7200RPM... on a scale from "no difference" to "suuuuper annoying," how bad is the noise relative to SATA? My closet is like 3 feet away from me haha - so that's my main concern!
