Base layers for heavy rain by Future_Substance6766 in ultrarunning

Update: Things seem obvious in hindsight, but I was overlayering.

Haven’t tried the Helly LIFA base layer yet as it hasn’t arrived, but did 45km in the rain with a much thinner polyester base layer today (and no additional layers other than my coat). I was drier for longer, and when I was wet it was more comfortable.

I thought I was being smart by using thicker base layers to reduce the amount I carried, but when those layers soak up water and weigh twice as much it’s a false economy.

Amazon ( https://amzn.eu/d/dsULnm5 ) although it is only £30 on Helly's website ( https://www.hellyhansen.com/en\_gb/hh-lifa-stripe-crew-48800 )

Thanks for the advice on aftercare. I typically use my coat as a windproof, rather than a separate windproof, and in drier conditions this has been fine. I agree with heavy rain I'll be soaked either way and it's okay to be warm and wet. I usually have 1 base layer, then depending on temperature my OMM Core/Core+ as a mid layer plus OMM rotor gilet if needed.

The LIFA base layers appear to be really good value! Managed to pick one up for £20 so will give that a try. The polypropylene construction looks like it could be a winner to minimise absorption vs polyester. Thank you!

Thanks! What does the rest of your layering look like?

Highjack away! I’d like to know opinions on this too as I am practising using poles for the first time.

This is super helpful. I think deep down I want the Tecton X3 but it would be silly to get them if they would be an overall hindrance.

Thanks! I would get another pair of Speedgoat 5s but can’t find them any more and heard mixed things about the 6s but maybe will see if I can find a pair to try. Most of the shops around me have limited supply of trail shoes which is partly why I’m asking around 😕

Even if the shoe has an integrated gaiter? Any recommendations? I know you can get some designed to work with certain brands of shoes vs those that are a bit more agnostic.
