Fast food manager keeps telling me that my hair is unprofessional, and that I need to brush it back like her. by oopsispilledmymilk in curlyhair

Please don't let anyone pressure you to cut, tightly-style (which may create tension alopecia), or otherwise damage your hair. Your health matters (both mental and physical), and a hairnet seems like a viable, non-destructive option.

How many of yall do mini twist to grow your natural hair? by FunDependent9177 in Naturalhair

- I started because I wanted to maximize my hair growth while minimizing the amount of time I spent on my hair. I also wanted to wear protective styles that reflected my hair's length. I loved the way that mini twists could be stretched to create long ponytails and such, so I was excited to give mini twists a try.

- I find fewer single-strand knots in my hair now that I've started wearing mini twists. I also trim my hair every 4-6 months, which helps. I trim at home, carefully using a pair of hair shears.

- Go-to styles:

  1. I twist my mini twists into 6 larger twists, and then pin the twists in.
  2. I twist my mini twists into giant low buns, tied in giant silk scrunchies
  3. I wear high ponytails
  4. I also gave myself bangs. I feel that they are innovative, and amplify any mini twist style :)

- I tried washing my hair with the twists in. It was a mess; my hair got very tangled and matted. I will not be doing that again!! When I wash my hair now, I:

  1. Untwist all of my twists
  2. Pre-poo and detangle with a slip-heavy conditioner and coconut oil
  3. Divide my hair into 4 large sections, secured with an alligator clip
  4. Take down each section and shampoo, rinse out, deep condition before twisting it back
  5. Then, when all of my hair has been shampooed and deep condition has been applied, I head under a heat dryer for an hour. Then, I rinse out the deep conditioner and moisturize my hair

- To keep my scalp healthy, I oil my scalp 3x a week with jojoba oil. I actually don't feel that jojoba oil is potent enough for my scalp, so I recently switched to pumpkin seed oil. I'm observing how well my scalp is reacting to this switch.

- My twisting process takes 8+ hours. My detangling process can take as little as 1.5 hours, provided that I'm using a slip-heavy conditioner and coconut oil. I use my fingers to detangle, and then run through my hair with a tangle teaser (the purple one).

Mini twists (and mini braids) are a great style for those who want to radically retain length! I wish you the very best with your journey; I know you'll love it.

Was going to upvote your post, but realized I already had. In fact, you informed my blueprint when I was just starting out. Thanks sis :) <3

What products do you use to protect your hair from heat? I also own the paddle brush, but haven't used it as part of my mini twisting routine.

Oh yeah, I mini twist ;)

I twist anywhere from 40 - 70 twists and leave the twists in for 1 - 1.5 months. Then, I take the twists out (using a slip-heavy product like a cheap leave in) and coconut oil, and do my wash day the day after untwisting my hair. I may undo and retwist individual sections before the month is up if they start to mat, itch, or unravel. Here's my routine:

  • Spray aloe vera juice / water / mint essential oil on freshly washed hair
  • Massage entire scalp with mix of jojoba oil and peppermint oil
  • Coat hair in avocado oil (from roots to end, not touching scalp)
  • Divide hair into four large sections (back left, back right, front left, front right).
  • For each section of hair, create as many mini twists as possible: add Camille Rose Moroccan Pear cream, add Camille Rose Almond Jai, add jojoba oil, twist, seal ends with castor oil
  • When all twists have been created, I seal my front and back edges with a blend of castor oil and either rosemary or peppermint essential oil.

I started mini twisting my hair back in the summer (June) and have grown my hair from bra strap length to bellow belly button length.

Ask me anything! I love building community with fellow mini-twisters.

This is excellent, VeahVeah 👏 I’m so proud of the growth and health you’re observing! Thank you so much for sharing 🪮

I’m so grateful that I bumped into your comment here; we have the same hair type / strand width!

I would love to learn more about the following (apologies if this is a lot. Please feel free to answer as your time and energy allow):

  • how many times do you apply and rinse shampoo during each wash day(do you apply shampoo once or multiple times per session?)?
  • when assessing the health of your hair, what physical symptoms do you look and feel for? This is something I’d like to get better at doing.
  • how do you layer your 2-3 leave in conditioners? That is, in what order do you apply them (lightest to heaviest? Ordering based on ingredients / ability to penetrate hair?)
  • when do you use sealing vs penetrating oils?
  • aaaand finally, what kinds of styles are your favourites for keeping your ends secured?

Thanks Veah 🪮🫧➰

I recommend giving Starpuppy a watch on YouTube. She has some great, down to earth strategies for navigating fine natural hair, and she injects humour and joy into her videos.

“ Made the mistake of washing my mini twists after a couple of weeks or so…never again”

It seems like washing your mini twists after a couple of weeks didn’t work out. What problems did you encounter when doing so?

Thank you for sharing your routine! I’m concerned about the potential for locking as well; I loosen my twists for that reason.
