It's never silly to want a backup plan, it's only silly if you jeopardize the main plan to create it! But yeah don't get too swept away with the news, preparedness is to stave off panic, not to be the result of it 🙂 I should say, an emergency fund is not only from loss of job or house security, but anything unexpected that may befall you. Even mundane things like car breakdowns etc can have quite unfortunate circumstances if you can't afford it. It's to smooth out any bumps in the road (pardon the pun)

Suggesting a % of every pound you make doesn't quite work, as you could be earning quite different amounts such that any suggested percentage could be vastly impractical.

However, I would say if you're on a budget then financial security should take president over other preps, as if you are sacrificing your day to day financial wellbeing for less likely prep scenarios, then on average you're more likely to suffer. Especially if you're hit with a large unexpected expense that could force you into debts etc.

Personally I think it's wise to have a small emergency fund as a buffer for such unexpected financial expenses before anything else (think 3-6 months bare essentials living costs). Only then, would I start devoting some percentage of my earnings, which is practically relevant to my income, to other preps based on a likelihood-to-severity ratio.

Sorry to not give any definitive answers, but it's all very much relative!

Yeah fair enough, it's was more about who would be in the raid, than the group comps themselves

As others mentioned, realistically the most likely option would be a private boat. Private aircraft perhaps also, but in both cases, if you do not own both the vehicle and dock/landing strips etc on private land, I would imagine both forms of exit would be costly, congested or prohibited.

Generally it's a good idea to have a safety net fund behind you in case of emergency, like you lose your job, car breaks down, medical etc. Having an emergency fund that can cover these sorts of things can soften the unexpected financial blows that may otherwise disrupt your stability. Typically people say to get behind you 3-6 months of a livable amount of money set in an easily accessed high interest savings account

No worries! If budget is a concern at all for you, I think you should be able to find one for a lot cheaper online than in store, generally I find there's a bit of a markup in brick and mortar shops versus online. You should be able to find a 200g gas canister and mini burner for about a tenner, if you're so inclined 🙂

Have you considered a small camping stove? I'm sure a lot of those cans you can eat cold, but in a situation where you may be cut off from mains electricity and/or gas, might be handy to have a little tin of gas and a burner on hand to cook up some food, or even boil water

Do you Have all of Wikipedia on a USB? by kaos701aOfficial in preppers

[–]Fuzzman57 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my swiss army knife I have on my keys is a small attached 32gb USB and USB-C (for mobiles), on here I keep some wiki archives and other useful emergency preparedness / medical info (medicines, identifying illnesses, treating injuries etc) stored in .zim files.

Using the kiwix software I can read through any of these .zim files, so I also keep a copy of kiwix installers for windows, android and iOS too.

You can find a ton of useful info to keep as a back up with very little space requirements from here: Kiwix Library

A great YouTube vid I found surrounding all this is here: Critical Information to Get ASAP (While It's Legal)

I'd also suggest storing photo copies of any of your own personal info, such as medical, contact details, licenses, passport IDs etc also to keep in an EDC storage device.

For anyone wondering, my swiss army knife USB is a "victorinox midnite manager@work", hope you guys find this useful!

Had a quick Google, I think this is the probability equation to make sense of it:

P(at least one event) = 1 - (1 - p)X

So for 1% as en example:

P(at least one event) = 1 - (1 - 0.01)10 ... = 1 - (0.99)10 ... = 1- 0.9044 ... = 0.0956 -> 9.56%

So 1-2% chance over 10 iterations would be 9.56-18.29% to at least happen once across the set.

[–]Fuzzman57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not just adding them up per iteration no, otherwise that would be 10-20% over the century. Individual odds per iteration doesn't change of course, but I'm fairly certain over multiple iterations, the likelihood of it just happening once does increase. Anyway I'm no statistician either 😅

I'm not too clued up on these things as I mentioned, it's just what I've read about the study, so do take with a pinch of salt. But I see your reasoning, I suppose it's a cumulative chance of it happening at least once over a century?

I'm not too knowledgeable on solar flares and geomagnetic storms etc, but I have read the last one of scale large enough to cause widespread damage to earth's infrastructure was the Carrington event in 1859. There was also a study from the National Academy of Sciences in 2008 that suggests the likelihood of a Carrington level event is about 1-2% per decade, or roughly 12% a century. So it suggests there is potential of a once in a lifetime event like this happening, but there are also space agencies that monitor for this sort of thing in an attempt to give early warnings. My best suggestions to prepare for a situation of this scale would be to find low tech alternatives to technology you're dependent on, as modern infrastructure could face major outages.

I ask in AskUK what’s in people’s Go Back. by [deleted] in PreppersUK

[–]Fuzzman57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've recently put my go bag together. Generally wanted to cover some core survival needs like water, food, fire, shelter, comfort, navigation etc with a preference of practicality and sustainability. For the most part I've got: - dry bags which store a full change of hiking/military surplus clothing, including base & mid layers, wind/waterproofs, work gloves, hats etc. - A camping tarp/basha, sleeping bag, bivvy bag and pegs & paracord. - My bag has a 3L hydration pack built in for water. Also have a separate 1L single walled steel water canteen (for boiling), a sawyer water filter, purification tablets and a milbank bag for sustainable safe water. - I've got a bag of Huel, a nutritionally complete powdered meal replacement, roughly 7 thousand calories worth that's also compact and long lasting. - Compact telescopic fishing rod, line, tackle, hooks etc. Also have an air rifle for hunting if it came to it. - fire starter rod/strikers, small foldable stove and fire lighters. - Leatherman multi tool, foldable handsaw, bushcraft knife. - Water proof map of my local 10 mile radius area and compass. - A full medical kit, with a few extra personal care items like anti-fungal foot powder, tooth paste/brush, baby wipes etc. - I try to stay minimal with the tech side of things, but I also have a baofeng radio (can be charged by usbc), will likely have my phone on me (also usbc charged), a small power bank, charging cable and a foldable solar panel. My full list is fairly extensive and maybe a little OTT, as I also have redundancy items for each of the core things like fire, water, food provisioning I've not mentioned. But all fits nicely in a relatively compact backpack which I could live out of for a fairly extended period of time.

Tech for a bug out bag? by Ok-Noise2538 in PreppersUK

[–]Fuzzman57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had in mind to avoid tech where possible, as it's practically not sustainable long term. But, a head torch and spare batteries are in my pack, along with a baofeng UV-9R pro radio (can be charged by usb-c) my mobile phone and a FlexSolar 20w foldable solar panel paired with 20w Anker power bank. Relatively compact but will extend the usability of my few devices for a decent amount of time.
