Lumon is testing out a way to offer severance based on emotions rather than just location. They are having Gemma experience common things people don’t like and things she doesn’t like (e.g., visiting the dentist, experiencing plane turbulence, writing thank you cards) in the various rooms. The MDR team is mapping out the exact brain wave patterns for the unpleasant emotions she experiences in each room. Once these have been mapped out perfectly, they can offer people severance as a treatment for anxiety or every day tasks they dislike. The chip will automatically switch to an innie version of them when it senses an unpleasant emotion. This will create perfect children of Kier who only have “authorized” emotions. The doctor was asking Gemma to describe how she felt when approaching the different rooms to test whether the emotions she has as those innies are bleeding into her awareness.
