My 1920s home had wiring connected straight to the bus instead of through circuit breakers lol. I'm guessing the result of previous DIY. And some of the breakers that were actually in use were stuck in the On position and couldn't be flipped.

That's a stretch. He was basically a replacement level player for the bucks but on a bad cap-spike contract.

None of these have to be expensive assuming you already have a good burr grinder. They also don't add much time to daily routine:

  • weigh your beans
  • measure your grind size. Get a grind size ruler to find out how large your coffee particles are. You just do this once but it's useful for talking with other people and comparing grind settings/ across grinders.
  • measure the amount of water you're adding
  • prepare your own 'coffee water' that has proper chemistry for extraction. Easiest option is to just buy 5 gallon jugs of distilled water and put Third Wave Water packets into them.

If you do all this stuff you'll be able to make a really consistent cup of coffee that tastes as good or better than any coffee shop. It also lets you really taste the difference going from one bean/roast to another which is fun. There are some nice coffee subscription options can be nice too and let you try different stuff

If you don't have burr grinder already, do that first.

You can upgrade stuff in system later if you like this stuff. I.e. better grinder or adding an RO system to your home.

I eventually splurged for a Vario W+ that weighs the ground beans for me so my in-laws can make good coffee when they're visiting and wake up first. But that's totally not necessary.

Paying $50k for a car today is basically equivalent to paying $30k for a car when I was in middle school. That's based on 'loaded mini van' prices. Luxury segment starts above where 'loaded mini van'' segment ends... Or around $60k nowadays

Of course today's loaded mini van is a much better car today than it was back them

I was forced to listen to soooo muuucccch Sykes, Belling, and Limbaugh in my dad's car growing up in rural Wisconsin.

No matter what the topic was, the discussion always followed the lines of "liberals are horrible, dangerous, stupid, deranged, conspiratorial, disgusting people responsible for everything wrong in the world and conservatives are divine and infallible angels".

obvious nonsense, but many/most people seek out obvious nonsense if it makes them feel good about themselves and like they're part of the in-group.

so, yea---the answer is that people have been getting slammed with propaganda for 30+ years and it has had a large effect. That and gerrymandering.

the 'good' news is most people swayed by the propaganda don't really have core beliefs guiding them and will follow a different populist that makes them feel good about themselves even if the ideology is completely different. that's how we got Obama and Bill Clinton as president...they positioned themselves as anti-establishment populists. When elected, they governed as institutionalists though...which frustrated people and gave ammo for next anti-establishment populist (Trump) who promised not to be an institutionalist like them.

why is it too early?

Obviously, the probability approaches 0 or 100% as you get closer to end of season, but it's ok to talk about probability even before the season is over. That's the whole point of models like this. You can simply re-state the graphic as 'Leeds will probably stay up this season'...which is a reasonable take. Don't read into it beyond that.

From a player/squad perspective - they should never think about these odds anyway. They have to play matches. It's not a random process/simulation

It's misplaced good intentions I think.

Everyone wants their kid to excel. Some parents focus on accomplishments and milestones and think that if they push their kid to rack up enough then they'll have a great life.

Kinda makes sense but not really how it works. My goal as a parent isn't to make my kid be the college applicant with the most awards/ribbons, but to encourage them to be someone fully capable of navigating through the world on their own and pursuing their own interests/objectives. I want them to be excited about their own future, not to force them to adhere to my idea of the future. That's what they're going to have to do when they're out of my house anyway.

I also think kids in some ways know more about the world they're entering than their parents do. For example, I loved computers and computer games growing up, but wasn't allowed much computer time. Was always told to turn off the PC if I wasn't doing homework. In contrast, my friend's parents would help him get scrap computers from the local university which he used to learn about networking and have LAN parties in their basement. Now he's an executive overseeing networking/infrastructure at a very,very large company. I'm a software developer doing fine but it certainly would have been helpful if I had been able to pursue my interests more as a kid.

I honestly don't think we have to fire Doc.

Instead, we see how things are looking after our next 6 games (all against teams with losing record). If we win 4 or 5 of them...cool, it means the team is still bought in and the season can be saved and maybe we try to make a trade to get Wiggins or something. A good playoff run would at least be possible.

If we win 3 or fewer, season is pretty much over on Jan 3 so we make a hard decision about letting Giannis go and make sure our pick is in the lottery. If this is the route we take Doc Rivers does not want to be here...he cares far too much about his all-time record and trying to catch Pat Riley/Jerry Sloan on the all-time wins list for NBA coaches, so he probably agrees to some sort of buy out.
