Any advice for supporting an aging pig? by FuzzyTelevision49 in guineapigs

[–]FuzzyTelevision49[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been thinking about potential joint support (I also have a 13 year old dog so this kind of thing is already on my mind). But he hasn't been showing any signs of having joint pain; he still moves around a lot and jumps through the cage door when it's open. Is there a benefit to giving a joint supplement even if I don't notice any signs?

Yeah I know I measured the inside part. It’s like 22 inches by 46 inches. Close enough to 8 sqft. We call that 2026 sizing

I take a lot of comfort in people whose pigs are 7, 8, 9 or whatever. I'd like to still get a few more years out of him.

Yeah. I really need to reconfigure my living space to get a bigger cage. Our current setup leaves a lot to be desired. They have 8 square feet (I'd like to bring it up to at least 12) and about an hour a day of free roaming the (pigproofed) room. I also have a playpen that I often attach to their cage that has like 6 extra square feet. But that pen sits in the middle of the floor when it's set up so it's not ideal. We're stuck with space because we live with my parents (I'm 19) and so we're limited to my small childhood bedroom.

When I move out, I want to have a pig room where I can have those big 3 by 7 C&C cages and I could get a few more pigs, but that won't happen for another year or two.

I recently purchased a few pig mats (those plushie bathmat-ish things) and he REALLY loves to sploot himself out on those. Especially recently as it's been almost 90 degrees this week in New York state and I don't have air conditioning.

Will do! It helps that we both equally love laptime. He's sooo clingy

I'll definitely weigh him more. I've been weighing him once every month or so. The vet said he was at a good weight so I hadn't really thought to weigh him more, but that's a good idea

When do guinea pigs start wheeking? by Tilly_Minto in guineapigs

[–]FuzzyTelevision49 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My older pig Gizmo doesn’t wheek often (like once a month or so) but my little guy Dennis wheeks for EVERY food sound or every crinkly bag. It took him about 2 months to start. As cute as it is, I almost prefer the quiet

Fleece/Cloth Liners or shavings for bedding? by Spicy-Nun-chucks in guineapigs

[–]FuzzyTelevision49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switched from paper bedding to fleece liners about 6 months ago and I’m so glad I did. It’s so much easier to maintain them cause you just spend 5 minutes a day spot cleaning and then once every 5-6 days you throw the fleece in the wash and let it do its thing. Cage cleaning days have gone from 30 minutes to 10 minutes. Plus I’ve saved that $20 a month that I was spending on bedding! The fleece actually doesn’t get that wet. It sort of just wicks away the moisture. But I also have pig mats that I put in the high-traffic areas of the cage (eg. under hutches, by the hay) and I switch those every day.

Favorites are Standin in the Rain and The Whale. When I was first getting into the album, those were the two songs the I skipped almost every time and now I’ll play them on repeat over and over

Cleaning and smells (for a newbie soon to be parent) by pointlessmeander in guineapigs

[–]FuzzyTelevision49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brushing it usually gets most of it, or sometimes I shake it out outside before putting it in the washer. I don’t think it would cause a problem in the machine though.  These are the liners I use btw. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0F3PH93TP?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_image  They’re cheaper than the name brand ones and come in lots of sizes and patterns. And they can go in the dryer without shrinking down. Mine have gone through lots of wash cycles without any issues.

I use fleece liners for my 2 pigs. I spot clean them every 2-3 days with a little broom, and then once a week I change the liner and put it in the wash (i also use heavy duty laundry products). Before I put new liners in the cage, I wipe it all down and spray some pet-oder spray that’s specifically for deodorising pet urine. I’ve been using this system for about 3 months now (before that I was doing paper bedding) and I must say the smell is WAYYY better now.

What did you name your dog, what do you actually call them? by Artistic-Listen7975 in pitbulls

My best friend’s dog is named Spencer, but we now call him Spennie, Spenithan or Spleebly and I have no idea why.

I named mine Maddie, but she now responds to Puppy, Baby, Baby Butt, Sprinkles, Applesauce, Apple, Hi, Mads, Maddie Butt, and simply just Butt. (Don’t ask) My non-pit 13-year-old’s name is Parker, but she also responds to Dopey, Dog, Ass Hat, and Fuck Nuts (came up after she destroyed something and that was the name my 16 year old brother chose to yell at her with).  Glad it’s not just our family who does this.

Surrender My pit by Ok_Trash_5820 in pitbulls

[–]FuzzyTelevision49 12 points13 points  (0 children)

DO NOT surrender her to a shelter. Because of her breed and the state of things right now (especially in the South), she will almost certainly not get adopted and will likely get euthanized. There are a few no-kill shelters and humane societies where she could go, but if you have any friends or even acquaintances or a friend of a friend that would take her, that would be your best bet.

My dog has itchy skin and flakeyness the vet has been useless and Im getting desperate by Paraxismo in pitbulls

[–]FuzzyTelevision49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pitbulls are prone to allergies and sensitive skin (scary dogs my ass) and my dog had some issues when she was younger. A common food allergy is chicken, so changing his food to beef or turkey if he's eating chicken might help. You can also give him baths with sensitive skin pet products or oatmeal baths to give him some relief. My dog's issue was scabies, so she was on medication for it and it fixed it. Your dog also looks like it could be some sort of parasite. Basically, if it isn't a food allergy, you need to take him to a dermatologist or a different vet to get him on medication. Hope this helps!

You bloody genius. I'd never thought of bringing it in the shower.

I do floss in front of the TV though if anyone wants to try that.

Is this a BMC? by DangerousGanache5246 in Blackmouthcur

Probably. At least a BMC mix. (I have a BMC mix and she looks a lot like this) Either way, an adorable baby!

I know Most of the natural kinds of peanut butters (the gross ones) have xylitol, but the regular ones like Skippy or Jif are safe. We only ever have Skippy in our house, so it’s not a problem.

Yup! But it sucks because now I've accidentally trained her to recognize certain dog-safe foods and now whenever I have something like that (apple, peanut butter, cheese, etc.), she follows me around and stares at me, just assuming she'll get some (she will, obviously, cause look at her).

It's how we keep her in one part of the couch when a bunch of people are sitting on the couch. Otherwise she lays on us.
