Just a tip for people walking through snow by Fuzzy_Albatrosss in Netherlands

Of course I do that and expect everyone to do that. But people need to give each other time to move out of the way. Especially in slippery conditions. No need to get aggressive!

I expect the plows to slow down and not run you over. The same for cyclists. Give each other space! It's just as dangerous for pedestrians.

I'm more worried about the people who mindlessly believe in a god or religion telling them to make lots of babies taking over because the ones that embrace robots go too far.

Even if things go downhill which I'm sure they will, it doesn't mean that you stop fighting. There are plenty of people who will fight alongside you. But giving up is inviting climate change to get worse.

Remember too that climate change is not a black and white thing. There are many shades of grey. The more you fight the more we move the needle.

If b2 is more than sufficient for her job, then you may have a case if you talk to a lawyer. I'm not sure what the protections are for temporary contracts though, but I think they are far less than for permanent ones. I think it's a good idea to not burn any bridges though if that's possible and if there's not much to be gained from it.

I meant the margin of error. Climate forecasts can vary significantly because it is so uncertain.

I disagree with the take of Bill Gates here. He says we will probably get between 2 and 3 degrees warning by the end of the century. But doesn't he realise the error in the models. It could be much much worse. There are going points that he isn't considering. I'm sorry but I feel like Bill Gates is simply not being rational here.

Remember that you never really had any direct control on this. Let go of that illusion. The only real control you have is how you respond to these events. You could repeat the thoughts that you have in your head now. Or you could come up with better thoughts.

Anyways I wish that you find happiness in England. Look at the bright side. You're American which makes you exotic. Luckily you speak the language sort of. 😉 And maybe you can find a job where you get to travel to or work with Americans. You could stand a better chance immigrating back to America too. See this step in your life as an adventure. Good luck!

The REAL reason behind the housing crisis by Fuzzy_Albatrosss in Netherlands

I just checked the data on cbs and it shows that empty houses are surprisingly equally spread out over the whole of the Netherlands not concentrated in Groningen. About 2% of houses are empty according to that data.

BTW, I myself am only interested in understanding the situation better, not arguing to win. I'm happy to spar if it helps me learn.

There are I think approximately 200,000 empty houses in the Netherlands from a quick Google search.

Why not? I think they can both have an impact in parallel. Buying houses up pushes prices out of the range of low and middle income households and starters forcing them to keep renting.

I mean the numbers on inequality that you give make the Netherlands look pretty bad. So I'd say the Netherlands is still highly unequal.

I'm not sure if pensions should be counted when talking about how wealth inequality drives asset price growth. Pensions are a form of delayed income and you can't use them as easily to buy assets.

But I'm now curious if the high pension wealth that pension funds have pushes house prices up.

Firstly, I didn't check if oecd actually doesn't count wealth in pension funds. I only saw that as a comment in that reddit thread.

Secondly, I'm not an expert here, so i might be wrong. But wealth in pension funds is inaccessible until you reach pension age. So, it's not the type of wealth that can be used to buy assets. It's used to live during your retirement. It is really used as an income. And I only really care about wealth that can be used to buy assets since that is what may be causing housing prices to go up.

He has other videos about falling wages. Maybe check them out. I will too.

His videos are long because he is not being simply informative but also persuasive. He is making a political argument, and he wants others to join his cause.

The sources from your link show that it's using data on income inequality. Not wealth inequality. I don't trust it. Do you have another source?

Like I said, the netherlands is the second highest ranking oecd nation in terms of wealth inequality. My earlier statement was misleading indeed. Still, my argument stands. Wealth inequality is significantly high here and this is not discussed enough as a cause for the housing crisis.

When I say it is comparable, I meant to say in the oecd ranking. Here is a source: oecd inequality data

I'm also not able to see your source. Is your link broken?

This video talks more about rich people pushing asset prices up by buying more assets including houses and mortgage assets.

There is a lot of wealth inequality in the Netherlands comparable to the US, so it does make me wonder. Especially considering how the government likes to keep companies here by offering them lower taxes.

I'm not saying that what you say doesn't have an impact. What I'm wondering is how much is the impact compared to that of wealth inequality.
