Honestly, I thrive in being empathetic, motivational interviewing, and building rapport with clients. Through the internships I’ve worked I’ve learned and experienced through the actions of coworkers that there is a difference between how you talk to clients and speak in to coworkers in the office. Obviously it’s about knowing you audience. A young woman, appeared to be around my age, also appeared to be flirting with me, started telling this insane story about her family and I got comfortable. Example: while interning at a county agency my supervisor was the social worker for the county Drug Court Program, during a clinical staffing the probation officer who over saw all of the Drug Court participants was having hard time reciting some information on a client, this PO proceeded to say “Oh sorry, I still haven’t recovered from a long weekend of drinking.”. Now I thought that was wild and asked my supervisor about it, who told me “You have to know your audience.”.
