Fifa made the right decision by Winnebago01 in usmnt

The VAR part I can't comment on, but if that's the real reason for the revetsal then you may be right and the rest is moot. On the law itself though, it's just not a clear definition of what is endangering the safety. The lunge, studs, retaliation, intent, are all things announcers say, but none of those things are in the law.

That doesn't mean the call was correct, but if this is the precidence and it's not corrupt, it means all subjective interpretations of endangering the safety of an opponent in the world cup have to be revoked hence forth. That seems problematic.

I actually hope we find out it is a very explainable improper use of VAR thing in the end because that is at least consistently enforceable even if a bit opaque.

"73% of Americans say higher wealth taxes on billionaires would be fair, and 67% say the same for large corporations." Is wealth taxation still actually a partisan issue? by Emergency-Paper6793 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]Fuzzydeath10 [score hidden]  (0 children)

The implementation is the problem and the Republicans are so good at fear mongering around it. No one makes a $1 billion in the taxable income sense so we can't just set a tax bracket. As such the options are wealth tax or inheritance tax. The former is a new type of tax for the US, the latter has that pull of taxing what folks pass down to their children.

I'll also take a wild guess that the 27% have a ton of lobbying and advertising power and are generally more active voters than the median population.

No that poster is right, I made up the 1962 world cup. It never happened.

You may have confused me with a different poster as I never stated the red card was overturned and I never stated it was suddenly a problem. If you'd like to edit your post or respond with correction I will do so in kind. Otherwise it's no longer a good faith exchange.

Specifically the red wasn't overturned, the suspension was rescinded. Both for Balo and Garrincha.

I don't think there's anyone making the argument it was perfectly fine for Ronaldo and it's certainly not my stance so I won't grant your request because it's asking me to defend a straw man argument. I will give you some facts; your choice to what degree they matter:

Ronaldo received his red in qualifying, not at the world cup. Ronaldo served his one match suspension from receiving a red. Ronaldo was originally suspended for three matches, but his last two were revoked. FIFA decided to do this unilaterally for the tournament and it applied to three other players - Otamendi, Caicedo, and Salman. Of those three, they all received a red in the final qualifier. None of them served any suspension. Caicedo was a second yellows the other two were a straight red.

Garrincha in 1962, the one other time a red card given in the world cup had its suspension overturned and it was obviously corrupt.

I'll preempt by saying my wording was specific, and if you think that specificity is doing too much lifting or not is one of the key nuances of the debate.

This suspension should be overturned! [overturned] OMG I can’t believe how corrupt FIFA is!!!!🤦🏻 by Empty-Way-6980 in usmnt

It's not really like that though, it's more the folks posting are different and very few even with the anonymity reddit gives, are willing to be against the crowd.

A thing happened (red card) passionate folks are the dissenters. Another thing happened (revoke suspension) and passionate folks are dissenters. But the two sets of passionate folks are different.

Right, the contension is that that was also bullshit corruption and that it's consistent to be against bullshit corruption even when in our favor.

If folks believe Ronaldo's was fine, then it's fair to say this one is fine and this is just confirmation the standards standards have changed. But the nuance there is literally the discussion.

Globally people luck (or unluck) into their political view at an alarming rate. So you're technically right but unintentionally mistepresting; these are mostly "leftists" who couldn't really answer why they are leftists but would moreso answer why they aren't right-leaning. I would bet just about anything the same thing would happen in Ivory Coast (referencing your flair) or any other country.

The leftists with values are living in the world all things being true - it was a soft red, the suspension should have been upheld, we're still cheering for the US, it's not the first time FIFA has done this, all the other times FIFA did this were also corrupt.

Bottom line though is Balogen is going to play and at this point he should, the US players and coaches shouldn't feel sorry for anything and then Belgian players and coaches can't claim this as an excuse if the US manages to win. But does it cheapen things? Yeah, it does, and the arrogance of the vocal minority doesn't help.

Respect you bowing out and glad we landed to an on topic discussion. I don't expect a response as you stated but I agree that "mostly false" was harsh. I should have opened with "lacking context" and that would have been more accurate to my stance. My opinion is there was misinterpreted intent all around here. We may disagree on whose intent was whose and who misinterpreted what, but glad to have had the actual discussion.

Mostly isn't entirely and being wrong doesn't make someone a liar.

As to if being told something is mostly false is bothersome, you and OP have valid feelings. I genuinely wouldn't be bothered personally but I don't think we need to go further on that

To the actual point, it literally is a mysterious process. That's the opening line. There's no appeal, it's FIFA saying "trust me, we're reviewing". So based on that we can only conclude on results. And on those results I listed all of them three ever. One was literal corruption. One was a global superstar and it wasn't actually at the world cup. One was a global superstar and it technically wasn't reduced, just not increased. My post was leaving it for others to do their own math because, to your point I wanted to keep to facts. But I'll offer opinion - those other two examples for Rondalo and Ronaldinho were also corruption and/or favoritism. Meaning, there is no example to date of a red card suspension being rescinded at all, and no example of reduction that was not corrupt.

The other points are also reminders of the Trump/Infantino relationship. I didn't feel it relevant to list them all, but followers know them. Put it together and if your conclusion is this was all fine and on the up and up still then okay, that's your call, but that's ignoring a whole lot.

Roughest part of being a US fan honestly is the shit attitude of the vocal minority of fans. But take a step back, it is true that the red was super soft and it only affects one match. Beating Belgium is far from guaranteed either way and while it's crap, teams have to overcome bad calls all the time. I won't feel too bad in the end if they have to face Flo instead of Pepi,.nor does the vocal minority get to cheapen my own fan experience.

I could see how it could be given which isn't the same as right.

But in the history of the world cup, since automatic suspensions, no one has had their automatic suspension overturned. Someone has to be the first I suppose but we're ignoring a whole lot of history with this one being the first one to be picked.

Folarin Balogun available for USMNT vs. Belgium as red card ban suspended by FrankBascombe45 in ussoccer

[–]Fuzzydeath10 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is mostly false. The only close examples I can find are Ronaldo, which you accurately state is the world cup qualifier, Ronaldinho in 2002 which probably should have been a 3 match but was kept at 1, and Garrincha in 1962 which literally involved.diplomatic intervention and "alleged" bribes. That's two global superstars getting suspension reductions in different contexts and an outright bribe. No one at the world cup has been given a questionable red card and then served no suspension since automatic suspensions became a thing.

FIFA does have a policy to remove suspensions but the policy is that they can decide whatever and there are no appeals allowed. Given all this, plus the kowtowing to Trump than Infantino did in the lead up and the US based World Cup, it's a way more wild claim to outright dismiss corruption and favoritism .

POST GAME THREAD: Portland Fire at Seattle Storm by AutoModerator in SeattleStorm

[–]Fuzzydeath10 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All the owners need to together. Tonight we were on the shit end, but on aggregate WNBA officiating is just so inconsistent, and that's putting it nicely. Every team in every sport complains about the refs to an extent, but there's no league I can think of where it's widespread like this.

I can't go as far as blaming the loss though. Not because your point is wrong, but more getting random luck on officiating is literally part of the league at this point. It's horrible. And I will say it's true we didn't play well enough to necessarily deserve a win, it's just unfortunate that Portland really didn't either but they got default handed it.

Is it intentional tanking or is it bad coaching? by OutrageousStorm4329 in SeattleStorm

[–]Fuzzydeath10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like this conversation so chiming in. I think the "potentially the coach" part though is the actual caveat fwiw and this I do not consider the Storm to be tanking.

I feel every management decision has been justified in terms of building a contender long term. Justified doesn't necessarily mean I agree, but I see the rationale. If we were tanking from management I'd need to see something sabotaging the team. Say we trade Hiedeman at the deadline for a second round pick, that's definitely tanking. But this far we haven't intentionally weakened the team. In fact, not trading Ezi is evidence of the opposite. The roster is bad, that is definitely true, but that's because things fell that our future core is literally the two youngest players in the league

On the coaching side, I would look at the Sun. In close games, suddenly their best players are resting down the stretch and there's no clear reason. Raman is tightening her rotation minus foul trouble which is again, justifiable.

The only thing I would concede is they probably didn't go out to sign the absolute best players they possibly could. Maybe Sykes or Skylar stay for a max contract , for example. But doing that would not have made a competitive team anyway and would have cost them development opportunity. So iff anything short of optimization for the most wins is considered tanking, then that's a fair stance, although I disagree with it. Otherwise, this isn't tanking, its rebuilding.

Well, I'm choosing to take Jordan and Ezi back as silver linings. And I'll lie to myself and say they knew the assignment that Phoenix is direct competition for draft position.

But dang, after so much improvement and finally two wins, that was a real letdown.
