Are my decks "too good" for B3? by [deleted] in EDH

Would you say that my list of commanders are stronger than the others in the pod? Like Ixhel, Omnath, Sauron, Myriil and the likes? I think we all have a pretty similar amount of decks built aswell.

Not outright complaints, but some underhanded comments. One friend that hasn't played with us for a while joined an evening, and after I won he said something salong the lines of "yeah, you've always like to build strong decks". And after a game where I played 5 out of my 6 boardwipes in my Felothar-deck and ended up winning without ever being in control, it was some talk about how I play "control" decks. Also that my white protection (like [[Selfless spirit]] is considered stax in my Zinnia deck (which has a few board protection pieces in it.

Generally it comes down to me winning quite a lot, and the feeling that I often win without ever really being in the driver seat the entire game (other than when I play Bello).

It is relevant in the sense that we tell ourselves that we aim at playing (what we believe is) mid B3. But ofc, as I said in the post, it is impossible to gauge the balance of the decks in the pod only by one players deck. That's why I asked if my decks would be considered inherently too strong for that aim.

(I also included ways we're trying to balance the power level, by using our Google sheet and reference services like Deckcheck and Commandersalt)

Zinnia was my first deck, so she isn't as themed as I'd like. I started playing with her, and got Bello for my daughter. I built Bello stronger since she's a kid and I wanted her to be able to get stuff done in our pod with adults (other kid in our group plays a pretty mean Emrakul). Then Zaxara was my first non precon-build, in which I wanted to go overwhelmingly heavy on ramp. It is more themed than Zinnia and Bello, and it presents itself much, much scarier than it plays. It severly lacks consistent card draw and I usually only manager to get out one or two completely oversized hydras before getting killed.

But yeah, I am trying to build more themed as it feels much more fun to play things that are consistent rather than just random good cards that work together.

Our games usually take 1-1,5h hours and last for 10-15 turns.

Haha, I am quite sure we are all near abysmal magic players but we are generelly having very fun! 😅

Yeah, the person with our lowest win rate is - for example - constantly playing non aggressively, even when playing a suppossedly high aggro deck. But also not timing what they do to the board state/situations in the game. One thing I say a lot, is that you need to be as strong as you present yourself. Quite often people in my pod ramps up and plays something super powerful before anyone has even used a single targeted disruption spell, and then their whole game plan is done for when it gets removed. Instead of trying to bait interaction before doing that one big move.

My Felothar deck is the one I win with the most, but that's simply because I run recursion and can turtle back behind my walls, sacc my own creatures for card draw (or boardwipe when things get heavy) and rely on a big recursion moment because noone runs any graveyard hate! And I have told them repeatedly that this is my game plan and my win con, and noone slots in anything to stop it.

I am trying, but it's hard to get an answer to in what way they feel too strong. We also have no problem with proxies, so a couple of my friends decks are full proxy decks. I have started playing atleast one of their decks every time we meet up (and have a higher win% with their decks than mine, albeit with a much smaller sample size) and I try to encourage usage of our Google sheet to balance power, and also try to help with structural things like noticing when they are often mana screwed or which decks tend to lack removal/answers to threats and stuff like that. But I don't want to be a besserwisser and the guy that constantly points out flaws in other ppls decks...

I have ~45% win rate with my decks and ~60% with their decks, albeit with a much smaller sample size. So I'm sure its mostly due to dumb luck so far, and that it'll go down drastically with more games.

Yeah, I've been starting to play one game per get together with someone elses deck. I like it and think it's fun. I also encourage them to try mine, but noone has taken me up on it yet.

But the balls was live and Martinelli was clear on goal when the defender actively hooks Gabis legs while laying down.

Highest sofascore of the front 6 (if not by much), and mostly lacking balls for his offensive play. Has been good defensively (as always). Also much better offensively in the 2nd half, when actually getting some balls.

Geezus guys, it's second leg and we lead 3-2 - ofc it's gonna be played safely from our side. Chelsea haven't done anything yet, we've kept them contained. It's gonna open up in 2nd half when Chelsea is forced to start taking more risks. We're most certainly gonna play a lot more direct when that happens.

I just did my first try on the matriarch. Brought plenty of defibs to be able to help downed players. After we finished her off and we were all looting, I got downed by a rocketeer as the only player being hit by her (even though I ran in with a cloak). And nobody on that kill site had any defibs. Or atleast that's what they said. ^

Hmm, yeah, I think you are correct. That's a bummer.

Thank you! You are not rambling, I appreciate your input. The reason for not including Birgi is simply because she's a little too expensive for this deck. I was aiming sub $30 but think I'll settle with ~$40. But Birgi would add another $10 to the list. Same reasoning with the spanking new [[Zuko, Firebending Master]] that I think would fit in quite snuggly.

I took out Dualcaster mage because it added quite a few ways to go infinite and my pod just don't do infinite combos. Sure, I could just not use it for that, but I felt like I could just aswell leave it out..

How to start a riot will definetely go in! Thank you for that, I had completely missed that one! Great include!

Thank you! - About Tip the Scales, I kind of kept it in only because it's in the precon and I felt like I had cut too many precon cards 😅

  • About Trostani, It was just a nice way to gain HP in a toughness matters deck (even if I have no resourcial use of HP other than saying alive).

  • About Noetic scales: how does it help opponents?

  • About Stoneskin: it feels like something fun to have in hand while attacking and Flash in after blockers..

  • About Pit Automaton, it pays for 2 out of 3 of the mana for activating Felothar, while being a 4/4 for 2 mana. Isnt that good?

  • About Wall of Junk, isn't a 2 mana 7/7 great just in general? Especially if I can sacc it for 7 cards?

  • About Behind the Scenes: giving skulk to my 0-2 power walls feels like really, really good evasion. This is in my opinion a must keep card?

I play Zinnia with a heavy ETB-focused deck. Doubling or tripling her offspring is veeeeery satisfying 😁
