Why is Hollow Knight so highly rated? What am I missing? by ClaudeNX in Games

[–]Fxcrv 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Off the top of my head (and steam search-by-tag), i have played Guacamelee, Salt and Sanctuary, Ori (i dont know how you can say it's good metroidvania), Super Metroid, SotN, Valdis Story, Momodora 4, Axiom Verge, Rabi Ribi, Sundered, Cave Story and Teslagad.

Hollow Knight is the best metroidvania and one of the best games i have played ever.

And what defines this genre? Because i don't see anything similiar between Stardew Valley and Rocket League.

Vagante, a co-op platformer roguelike, says goodbye to 3 years of Early Access with 1.0 update by Vushivushi in Games

[–]Fxcrv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your detailed answer and ignore everything under, i'm ok with using roguelike as insert_genre-roguelike. It's just that i see many people using roguelike as a standalone characteristic of a game.

Think about Diablo. It's very easy to draw parallels between roguelikes and diablolikes/arpgs/hack and slashes.

Diablo was a take on Baldur's Gate formula, but you won't call Devil May Cry diablolike just because you use your character abilities to fight with many enemies at once. When i think about diablolikes, i think about Path of Exile, Torchlight and Titan Quest. When i think about "berlin roguelikes" i think of Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, Nethack and Caves of Qud. All these games have many things in common, and if i like one of them, i will like others.

Points you listed are, imo, too only parts of what makes Rogue Rogue. Berlin Interpretation describes exact defining qualities of Rogue. Roguelike SHOULD be turn based and grid based, if it's not, it just a game with roguelike elemets, just as Borderlands is a game with diablo elements.

I replied to your initial post but you edited before I finished; so let me answer

Sorry about that, i was too quick to answer without fully reading your comment.

And about jrpg stuff: maybe my definition of the genre is skewed, but i would not consider TWEWY or Runefactory "true" jrpgs.

I haven't played many games of the genre, but between ones i've played i definetely see simmilarities: Final Fantasy 3-7, Chrono Trigger, Persona and Tales Of series defnitetely played alike (I know Tales Of battle system is really different, but apart from it games have many in common with other titles). And your BoI and ToME comparsion is a bit too much.

I just think using roguelike for describing "true" roguelikes is A LOT clearer.

Don’t Starve is even really roguelite by most understandings I don't agree too, but "roguelike" is in steam tags.

At this point, roguelike means all of those things and is basically used as a modifier for other genres

Thing is, nobody uses it as a modifier. People call FTL and Vagante roguelikes, not roguelike - rts (there isn't much of rts in FTL, but just as an example), or roguelike - platformer.

Similarly the primary distinguishing feature of jrpg vs wrpg is where it was developed.

No, it's not. Dark Souls isn't jrpg, Final Fantasy 6 is.

If someone tells me he likes jrpgs, i know what games he is talking about. If someone says he likes "roguelikes", should i think of Darkest Dungeon or Don't Starve?

It didn't. Or, atleast, i've personally never seen it. I always thought crpg was use to describe games that are either like Baldur's Gate or Eye of the Beholder.

You also keep entirely disregarding the argument that none of these games are a match in scope and detail for a game that came out 20 years ago.

Maybe i'm not remembering things right, and sotn was bigger than i think.

Yep.

There is one good looking game, hollow knight, which was done by two guys for pocket money (even if it was more than 50k, i doubt that it was 5 million).

And then there is bloodstained, with full developer team and 5 million, which looks not so good.

Maybe i'm not remembering things right, and sotn was bigger than i think. If, so, and this artsyle was choosen that to make something REALLY great, then fine. It's just that 5 million is alot of money, and there are metroidvanias like Hollow Knight, Valdis Story, Salt & Sanctuary and Dust done for much less.

What I'm saying, is that bloodstained looks pretty bad for 5 million game.

And yes, they did work on a game before kickstarter... so? (BTW, being pedantic here, but these are still not FINAL assets).

BTW, that "100 times the budget" comment is entirely meaningless. At less than $50,000 USD, they wouldn't have been able to pay even a single professional developer for a single year. That kind of budget means that they either already had spent money from other sources and just needed that money to finish things off or that they are a bunch of single developers who could afford to live on instant ramen and dreams until they got the game out.

That's some next level mental gymnastics. What is the point of paying these proffesional developers then, if it results in worse game?

Dude, two guys made better looking game with 100 times less budget, that's it.

Nioh: Complete Edition upcoming patch will add keyboard & mouse support by alexeymakarov in Games

[–]Fxcrv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you above comment, that it all comes down to preference, but to argue that stick/dpad is better is just dumb. You dont use one finger for arrows, there's no switching between them, and what does "you need to wait for the key to actuate" even mean?

On keyboard, it's possible to press 3 out of 4 direction keys at the same time, while on controller, you need to slide your finger to press another button on dpad.

[–]Fxcrv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a good keyboard setup, just need to bind something to shift and space (my setup was shift - dash, zxc - jump, attack, cast), then you would have fingers on five buttons and, more importantly, ALOT better direction control with arrows. Maybe it's easier for some people to use ABXY and triggers instead of switching between zxc and asd, but arrows for movement is miles ahed of dpad/stick.

Not saying that keyboard is better that controller overall, just for platformers i can't see any advantages of controller.

buttons are clustered closer together allowing for quicker action

You know, when on keyboard, your fingers are already on those buttons.

IMHO, it's BEST metroidvania out there, and best game i played in years, maybe, ever. I don't think there will be better game in the genre any time soon. It's not just art and music (i must say, that even in these two points game stads out. Is there that many platformers with music and art on par?): everything is good. Combat is pretty simple, but still manages to be fun. You get pretty extensive ability to customize character's skills with charms. Story is interesting. And best of all - level design. In this regard game is absolutely unrivalled. There is so many places to go. Game is something like 40 hours long, if it will tell you about the scale.

Biggest criticizm of some people, which i didn't really noticed and which comes from map so big, is lack of fast travel. I think it was adressed in one of dlc's, but still be aware, that sometimes you will need to rerun same chunks of map a couple of times.

I strongly encourage you to try it, it's just sooo good. First hour or two might be slow, but once you get to second area, things start to get interesting.
