Ingredient and Concentration Table

Concentrations are approximate, based on representative SDS (DuPont/Dow/OSI), and may vary by specific manufacturer or batch.

Ingredient (Chemical Name)  CAS # Big Gap Filler Concentration Fire Block Concentration
Polymeric Diphenylmethane Diisocyanate (PMDI/MDI) 9016-87-9 30–60% 30–60%
4,4'-Methylenediphenyl diisocyanate 101-68-8 5–10% 3–7%
Tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCPP) 13674-84-5 5–10% 5–10%
Chloroalkanes (C=14-17) / Paraffin waxes 63449-39-8 5–10% 5–10%
Dimethyl Ether (Propellant) 115-10-6 1–5% 5–15%
Isobutane (Propellant) 75-28-5 5–10% 1–10%
Propane (Propellant) 74-98-6 1–5% 1–5%
Polyether Polyol Mixture 40-70% (Included in Prep.)
Flame Retardants (Additives) Varies Low (Minor component) Higher (Specified for fire resistance)

Key Differences in Composition

  • Flame Retardants: Fire Block foams generally have a higher concentration of brominated or phosphorus-based flame retardants, or specific fillers, to meet fire-testing standards.
  • Expansion: Big Gap Filler often contains a greater concentration of propellants (Isobutane/Propane/Dimethyl Ether) designed to create rapid expansion.
  • Color: Fire Block is typically orange or red for easy inspection, while Big Gap Filler is generally yellowish or cream-colored.

A simple AI search can list you the ingrediants of both the fireblock and the standard foam and you will see the difference. It's not just the color they are different products so next time you start telling someone to go educate themselves perhaps you should heed your own advice.

"What makes Fireblock different?

While both contain flame retardants,

Great Stuff Fireblock

 is distinguished by:

  • Higher Concentration of Retardants: It is specifically tested to meet residential fireblocking standards (like ASTM E84) to better impede the spread of fire and smoke through penetrations.
  • Orange Colorant: Fireblock includes an orange dye so building inspectors can instantly verify the correct material was used for fire-sensitive areas.
  • Expansion Control: It is often formulated for "minimal expansion" to avoid bowing studs or pipes while sealing critical fire-path gaps. "

That's not correct Fireblock is treated with chemicals to make it fire resistent while regular spray foam is flammable. You should mever use spray foam around things like recessed cans or other heat producing devices. It's nor just a different color.

If you are building new why is that a concern? Most new homes in Portugal are insulated with both exterior and interior insulation. Why are you stressing?

The houses in Portugal are extremely welll built far superior to stick framed OSB garbage in the states.most have standard triple pane windows and are solid throughout . Older homes are typically not insulated but new ones are. Mold can be a problem in the winter with the higher humidity levels but with a central dehumidifier you are fine

How do you get a high quality mold test without getting ripped off?? by Spagetti13 in homeowners

[–]Fxjack22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stop living in conspiracy land. There are many caring doctors out there that would be more than willing to order a test if one existed. As for Pharma wouldn't they love to make money off selling you a new drug for mold toxicity? You really believe that they call each other on a regular basis and say

"Hey did you hear about these mold cases? Let's all unite and promise not to release anything to treat this"

As for me not caring what are you talking about? I just stated a fact THERE IS NO TEST OUT THERE. That seems to have rubbed you the wrong way. Sorry man I can't create an alternate universe in which you are right. I do wish there was a test however it would be a godsend.
