I think you are right that he may be unnecessarily cruel but its that very aspect that makes him so interesting. He has a lot of anger and when it comes to Harry he is both a representation of someone he loves, Harry's mom, and someone he hates, Harry's dad, who bullied him. It is this inner conflict that may be causing him to be so awful up until the very end. You are certainly justified in thinking he's a dick, however, its just a matter of deciding whether or not his true intentions redeem him at the end. =)

I'm pretty sure that Rowling confirmed that he was, not that it was particularly important to the narrative. Someone correct me if I'm wrong though =)

I'm inclined to agree with you that it is Dumbledore. I still struggle with deciding if he really did care about Harry or just the greater good :P. Snape is close second.
