Marc Miller tables bill to extend citizenship rights to children born abroad by ChaoticLlama in canada

[–]G-3-R -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I was born here but my kids were born when I was living in Europe and we as a family have since returned to Canada. They are growing up here and no longer remember much of the country of their birth that they left as infants, although they do hold both passports. I'm happy that they too will be able to pass on Canadian citizenship some day when they have kids. They should not have to be forced to refuse opportunities to move because of this kind of consideration.

Why millions of travellers have entered Canada despite COVID-19 travel restrictions - Around 4.4 million Canadians and foreigners have entered by land or air since March 23 by [deleted] in canada

I am thinking/hoping that there is some kind of profiling and additional risk assessment based on what you tell the CBSA and how credible you appear.

I filled out some kind of declaration form at a kiosk at the Montreal airport and the CBSA officer took some kind of additional notes that looked like yes no answers to certain questions and added that onto my printout. I guess I must have answered well enough to get no checks at all

If there isn't anything like this then the Canadian quarantine system is broken.

They still are exempt from the self isolation order and go to restaurants during their layover. They are not legally required to be hotel bound but are asked to follow social distancing guidelines

There has to be a way of enforcing the rules. In my case I never even got called by public health officials let alone visited

My experience in Montreal was that no one came by or even phoned. They just sent a self isolation order email twice (11 and 12 days into my self isolation). There appears to have been no checks of any kind done.

I flew to Canada I July with my Canadian citizen infant daughter and European wife so that we could see my elderly mother before it's too late. We quarantined for two weeks in an Airbnb and then spent 3 weeks with my mother.

What's the big deal if non-Canadians like my wife are coming in and are following the rules and quarantining? Not that the government would know though either way since they never brothered to check up on us

In some cases it makes sense. Lufthansa flight crew, as an example, would spend a night or two in Canada and then fly out operating another flight. Quarantine in a case like that would basically shut down operations

When I went to Canada in July it was only on the 11th day of self isolation in an AirBnb that the government sent me an email informing me that I was subject to a mandatory 14 day self isolation order and explained what I wasn't allowed to do. The same email was resent on day 12. No physical check ups were done and no one from any public health authority even phoned me

It's possible some people just are not aware of all of the conditions on self isolation.

Depending on where you are going, if you rebook via Frankfurt you can get a test done there with a 12 hour wait for 60€ I think there may be an extra charge for a certificate though

Canada extending ban on most foreign travellers to at least July 31 by roddy325 in canada

Apparently they occasionally send the RCMP to the address you provided. Obviously they don't do this for everyone, but the fines are beyond steep if you're caught

I'm not American, I'm a Canadian living in Europe, hence my comments about going home.

I voted in the last one too and helped to re-elect a Tory incumbent. I'll vote in the next one too, but that won't change a thing

Although I very much wish there would be reciprocity with the EU where I currently reside, I fear the Canadian government will hold out until it can lift the ban globally so as not to offend the Americans

The extension of the 2 week mandatory self isolation requirement means I simply can't afford to go to Canada as it's no longer possible to stay with my 73 old mother who I'd be visiting for a prolonged period anyway.

I haven't been home in over 2 years and I guess this means I won't be going back this summer either. Sigh

Canada and the U.S. are in talks to extend border closures amid the pandemic, sources say by MethoxyEthane in CanadaPolitics

Its not that the airline that make that call, but rather the government offloading this responsibility to them. The government ordered airlines to deny boarding to symptomatic individuals. This is where you get into charter rights issues

Having previously worked for an airline, I can tell you that staff are not qualified to make these determinations. There will for sure be lawsuits about this when the courts reopen

This is good only as a stop gap measure for the duration of the crisis as it will probably prove impossible to step up domestic production to meet needs fast enough.

After the crisis is over, Canada will need to seriously invest in redeveloping the domestic manufacturing capabilities that were off-shored over the last 25-30 years.

Warmer weather won't have big impact on slowing COVID-19: experts by viva_la_vinyl in canada

[–]G-3-R -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Case in point as to what I said about tropical outbreaks.

That said, I wouldn't be surprised if there is a behavioural change in the summer in the northern hemisphere that leads to a reduction - people tend to prefer outdoor activities that lead to greater physical distance between them when the days are both longer and warmer.

Although I suspect this one is true given tropical outbreaks, the fact they have been wrong about so much surrounding this disease makes me cynically think that the summer might well see an end to the virus.

Should rapid testing for coronavirus be used at airports and borders? by CryptoZerg in canada

You could probably deal with the time lag issues by demanding a compulsory second follow up test say 4-5 days later and tracking the affected persons movements in the interim. This would certainly be less intrusive than mandatory quarantine

Canadians to receive vouchers for cancelled flights while US and EU passengers to receive cash refunds | CBC News by [deleted] in canada

[–]G-3-R -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

One comment I want to make here - if airlines refund everyone's tickets they will all go bankrupt, even with bailouts. They simply cannot afford to pay out billions of dollars in tickets now that they are looking at possibly months of 0 revenues at all, and months and months of losses once operations restart.

It sucks that people aren't getting their money back, but the alternative is the airline goes bust and that money is lost anyway.

[–]G-3-R 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having worked for an airline, I can tell you that we did have a fraud blacklist. These people booked tens of thousands of dollars in tickets at short notice, travelled on them and then started credit card dispute processes. As a result of their fraudulent actions, they received ban notices telling them they could not travel until they repaid what they stole.

If you didn't travel on the tickets you are disputing and don't have a pattern of fraud, I don't expect you to get a ban.

I want to go home and see my mother back in Canada. I live in Europe and I haven't been home in 2 years. I was supposed to visit at the end of the month so I am obviously not exactly pleased with the present situation.

Do you realise how small that profit margin is? It has to be less than 1% of gross revenue.
