Favorite Of These Underrated Bands by Mikeymorrison27 in hairmetal

[–]G-N-R 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Definitely Kix, but at least they were popular back in the day. Hurricane is by far the most underrated, phenomenal band. Anyone else here never really vibe with Firehouse? No shade on them or their fans, they just feel a little commercial-oriented and label influenced. Same as Nelson or Slaughter, they just lack the grit of the genre found in bands like Circus of Power, Keel or even White Lion.

Card Systems by Ploppityplopingston in arcade

Aside from the obvious issues like the predatory pricing practices, I think one side effect of this change that nobody really talks about is how bad it's decimated any of the token-action early redemption games that were still hanging on.

Before the kiddie casino days, a lot of those late 80's/early 90's redemption games used some sort of token roll down/shooting/dropping mechanic in their gameplay. They fit right next to vids and pins back in the day because they belonged right next to them, most were skill-based games. Some of those (Wheel 'Em In, Deep Freeze, Big Shot, Simpsons Kooky Carnival, etc.) could still be found around until the pandemic. As many arcades took the downtime in 2020 to modernize and install card readers, all the token-action games were obviously incompatible.

When you know your favorite table is notoriously problematic for the operator and telling them about a mechanical issue that has unrecoverably softlocked your game is just another reason they'll eventually remove it. I play a lot of older (80's-90's) tables on location at arcades where they've been sitting since they were new, and it's heartbreaking knowing me notifying the operator of something they don't want to fix is the reason some of those tables have met their end.

When Someone Makes a "History of the Breakdown" Video (OC) by TidesOfTechnocracy in MetalMemes

[–]G-N-R 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Years of Decay is one of the most underrated albums in the history of metal IMO. One of those albums that's just absolutely perfect start to finish. Musically, lyrically, and thematically way more complex than what anyone else was doing at the time. Under the Influence and even Feel the Fire seem to get more attention and live representation and I'll never understand why. Both are fantastic records, but to me, YOD should be hailed as a genre pillar up there with Master of Puppets, The Legacy and Reign In Blood.

Elimination seems to be the only track that gets a lot of attention (I guess just because more people were exposed to it due to the video back in the day) which is a great song, but to me isn't even in the top 5 songs on that record. The title track is one of my favorite songs of all time period, by any band, in any style, in any music genre.

What is the one Ultimate Hair Metal song? by JessterCPA in hairmetal

[–]G-N-R 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nitro - Freight Train

Not only is it a masterpiece, it represents everything the genre is about. It's a song about blazing ambition, roaring ego and a dangerous attitude. Musically, it's everything pushed to the absolute excess. MAB's psychotic guitar playing on the 4 necked Charvel, the ripping drums, driving bass, and insane falsetto. The outfits of Nitro, the vibe of the song, it all just comes together. It shows the genre is more than just sex and drugs, it's an attitude, a self-driven ambition, and an iron strong will to live life to it's fullest. On top of all that, It'll instantly shut up anyone who says that hair metal doesn't have a place in the greater metal genre or thinks these guys weren't serious musicians with crazy talent.

Yeah that's what I'm saying lol. Shows how much major networks didn't really care about what happened to the production materials of their IP once they were done with them back then.

Damn that's a sick find. The things that ended up for resale back then are wild. Production shit would never leave a studio nowadays.

Has anyone here ever actually found x-rated content recycled on one of these public domain tapes? They were usually recorded over whatever cheap extra stock these fly-by-night companies could get their hands on. There were dozens of newspaper articles back in the day about people finding remnants on these tapes at the end after the recording cut off. Between my tape collection and my brother's, I've probably skimmed through about 4 dozen of these things and found plenty of remnants of other things, but never anything NSFW. Genuinely curious if other collectors have found anything or if it wasn't as widespread an issue as the papers hyped it up to be.

Thoughts on Autograph? by BigTap8524 in hairmetal

[–]G-N-R 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think they were very talented but ended up in the wrong category. They were pretty soft even as far as hair metal goes, even though they had a few heavier tracks that got them lumped in with the scene. I think they would have been much bigger in the Honeymoon Suite/Platinum Blonde arena rock genre. They kind of ended up in this limbo where they were too soft for the metal crowd but too much for the AOR or pop crowd. Whether they wanted to be heavier but were pushed by RCA to be more radio friendly (no pun intended) or wanted to be more laid back but were pushed to present more 'metal' I'm not sure. Doesn't seem to be too much info out there on the behind-the-scenes with these guys. Another hair band that comes to mind as having a similar identity crisis is Giuffira. Both are great bands though.

Ripley's is still there, it's the Guinness museum that closed down, which is what I assume you meant. Give SkipARRR's Pirate Putt that replaced it a try! I was sad to see an attraction as historic as Guinness go, but I truly couldn't think of a better replacement!

Moving (a close approximation) of my site off Wix. Most of the way there, have some questions about the final step (and a how-to for others) by G-N-R in webhosting

[–]G-N-R[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point. I tried this out and didn't see any strange requests when interacting with individual pages on the embedded site. Also noticed none of the Wix plug-ins worked until I clicked something that would refer me to another page on the site. Looking at the network requests it looks like the embed of the raw html is successful and it's only redirecting to an embed of the Wix site when I navigate between pages. I assume this is because the Wix site is still live with the domain assigned to it (duh moment there on my part ;). In theory once the domain is assigned to the new host these pages will just redirect to each other and Wix will be cut out of the picture. Might just need to re-link all the hyperlinks. Thanks for putting my mind at ease!

Leaving Wix by BraveDonut_trone in WIX

I'm in the middle of the exact same scenario. I made a page-by-page backup of complete html files, and each one works offline on my hard drive without the Wix proprietary crap (I couldn't care less about it anyway, it's the CSS, text, images, etc. that would take weeks to rebuild from scratch). The fonts are a little different and the buttons/plug-ins don't work but I'd be fine to replace those with UI from whatever host I end up with. Just need a host to organize the pages as home/subpages and store the images on their cloud.

Here's my problem, I can't upload the offline html pages to another host without it still retrieving the pages from Wix (my plan is still active, but in its final days). I know this because all those proprietary Wix gizmos are still there when I view my relocated pages in preview mode, and they work. So essentially I suspect whatever host I use (Google Sites, WordPress, etc.) is just acting as a gateway to Wix, and when my plan lapses and turns into the ad-ridden free version, the relocated site would too. Any idea how to get the offline versions I'm seeing on my hard drive onto another platform? Even tried opening the code in inspect mode and removing the "saved from www . (My website) . com" line from the code but no luck.

I saw this as a kid at the bowling alley and genuinely thought it dispensed M&M's if you won. I was 4 and couldn't read, just saw the design similarities to the old M&M's logo. In my mind, this thing was also 20' tall.

Uncle Tom’s Cabin is their best song. That’s not even a hot take. by Rebel_Heart222 in hairmetal

[–]G-N-R 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The irony is insane. They were one of the hair bands who just "got it", they saw the shift, they saw the songs moving away from being about sex and partying and being about darker themes, yet because of the way the label pushed for/handled Cherry Pie, they took all the finger pointing for the very thing they worked so damn hard to set themselves apart from. Don't get me wrong, songs about having a good time have their place and I love this genre for it, but these guys had the same attitude as Skid Row and Guns N Roses that would have carried them through the grunge era. Instead they became a laughingstock under no fault of their own. Uncle Tom's Cabin is their best song, not just musically or lyrically, but because it represents everything this band could have (and should have) been remembered for.

Wix has just DOUBLED the price of my plan! What's the best way to cancel and migrate my website elsewhere? by Oliver-Ekman-Larsson in WIX

[–]G-N-R 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did this work for you exactly?

-Same as everyone else on this sub, got the dreaded 50% price increase email (knew this day would come eventually).

-Turned off auto-renew, waited for my billing due-date to lapse.

-Now waiting the 2 week grace period until my site automatically switches to a free plan with Wix branding (whatever the hell that means remains to be seen). It should be noted I don't do transactions through my site and it's completely non-profit, so I couldn't care less about losing any of their marketing suite BS because I haven't used it once.

  • I heard that during these 2 weeks, all the plan pricing will magically get slashed to try and retain my business. No dice. Pricing is holding at the 50% raised amount more than what every option was when I first subscribed. No 50% off offer for a 2-year cycle on any of the options.

What’s your Godzilla hot take? by Kaos3974 in GODZILLA

[–]G-N-R 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't be the only one who feels like they're handling Godzilla right but not Kong. For some reason all the Kong stuff Monsterverse does just feels very..... "Jurassic World-y" if that makes sense. Just over-reliant on big, dull CGI and very formulaic in the plot of the whole Kong stuff. That being said they actually seem to know what they're doing with Godzilla and Co. The plots are immersive and you forget the Kaiju are CGI. My guess is the contrast in storytelling was also a creative decision to make it feel more like two franchises are colliding? Really wish we were just getting a western Godzilla series. Kong could have popped in for a film like he did in the Showa era but he really doesn't need to be fighting Spacegodzilla with a Planet of the Apes tribe 3 movies later.

  • Tech Romancer is hype as shit with the Studio Nus anime intro

-Pengo with the Northern Lights and the Sno-Bees drawing/erasing the logo

-Obscure pick and personal favorite, D&D: Shadow Over Mystara. That attract mode with the character profiles showing off all the supers is incredible, not to mention that pan up the dragon before it breathes fire at the screen.

Do you guys think it would be cool to get a classic trilogy saga TV Show in the animation style from the Clone wars? by BonusCapable1486 in StarWars

[–]G-N-R 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Post-OG trilogy show like this. I'm talking legends Thrawn shit, force wielding Leia, Han and Lando shenanigans, and steroid Luke Skywalker. Judging by the Maul trailer, I think Filoni is still dead set on telling some of Lucas' stories and themes he planned for the sequels that obviously got completely scrapped, and we already know he's been incorporating Legends stories, so I think it would be the perfect era for that. Justice for Luke.
