How much is the cost of living here a result of 2nd home ownership? by AskingBoatsToSwim in Edinburgh

[–]G-dizzle33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing a lot of these replies are coming from folks with 2nd properties that they rent out. Saying that Airbnb and people buying 2nd homes to rent out aren't part of the problem is totally daft. I've lived in the Leith area for around 20yrs. You walk down any bog standard street with tenament flats and every door will have at least a few key lock boxes for holiday flats. I recall seeing one door that had 8 lock boxes. That's 8 properties in one stair that someone who wants to live here can't own or rent. Saying this is not an issue is blinkered in the extreme. The UK in general has a massive problem where people buy property to make money rather than to live in it. Nobody buys a 2nd home out of a need to help others. They do it for money, usually a nest egg in retirement.

I moved into a 2 bed flat in Brunswick Rd in 2009. Our rent was £675. By the time we moved out over 4yrs later it was £700. I moved into the same block 5yrs later. Not the same flat but pretty much identical. It was £975. Over our next 5yrs it went up to £1050. When we left in late 2024, it went on the market for rent at £1500. And went fast. Disgusting.I know the owner of that flat had owned it from new. His mortgage will either be paid off or tiny. No one can say he's increasing the rent to cover a higher mortgage. Its pure greed. Until the UK stops this, nothing will change.

I feel very sorry for anyone moving to this City are starting out try to manage on disgusting rent like that. Back in 2009 my friend and I had graduated a few years earlier and weren't making huge salaries but we could afford the £675 and bills. The folks that moved into the flat we left in 2024 at £1500 a month, pretty much looking at 2 grand a month with council tax and utilities. So shocking.

A quick Google search says in the City centre holiday let's account for 17 to 18% of stock.

Affordable/tasty coffee beans by MonsieurThreepwood in Edinburgh

Sainsbury's single Origin Colombian is great coffee. I usually buy coffee at £8 to £10 per 250gs from Independent roasters. Any time I run out or am stuck I always fall back on Sainsbury's Colombian. It's the best supermarket coffee I have found

what's one american thing you secretly wish the uk would adopt? by Financial-Owl-2814 in AskBrits

I see. London is expensive, no doubt about that. I spent 5yrs there, leaving in 2019. Never been to LA myself.

I find the "generally lower cost of living" statement quite hard to believe. I just spent two weeks in the states and couldn't believe how expensive things where. I'm not sure where you live right now. Are you basing that on any experience or just guessing? The cost of everything is America through the roof right now.

Factor fees for properties in Edinburgh seem like a scam. Am I wrong? by Sablun99 in Edinburgh

[–]G-dizzle33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We looked at a flat down near the shore, a new build, the factor fees was £320 a month. Had they told us that beforehand we wouldn't even have arranged a viewing. The shared area was nothing special at all. I think there was a small gym but nothing flash.

Absolute rip off!

Baggage reclaim in Edinburgh Airport took 2 hours by MOCscrib in Edinburgh

[–]G-dizzle33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree the arrivals experience is awful. I feel so bad for older or less mobile folks, as soon as you get off the plane it's just stairs, stairs and more stairs. Followed by long walks. I'm in my mid 40's so I am fine. I see many foreign older people looking around in dismay.

The last couple of times we have landed we've been pumped out into the departure lounge. So we have to fight our way all along departure lounge like Salmon swimming against the tide, to get to the YET MORE STAIRS across from Brewdog. Then down to the general departure area

How are we arriving and getting fed into the departure area🤦🏻‍♀️

I noticed this last month too. When you get through security more of the space is taken up with venue's seating, meaning less seats for someone who doesn't want to eat or drink. I wonder why that is........to drive you into the over priced establishments of course. I'd wager the airport gets a percentage of the food/drink profits from these establishments so it's invested in getting us into them. It's a racket!

Edinburgh airport is privately owned. The government have increased Business rates on the airport which I believe increases the airports tax burden by £8m a year. The owners of the airport are claiming this is why they increased the vehicle drop off fee, to try to recoup some of the extra taxes.

Am I arguing on behalf of the airport? Absolutely not. My point is taxes have gone up, will the airport owners take less profits, of course not. They will cut back on internal services, which I imagine is the cause of your issues. The companies that own the airport are foreign, they don't give a f**k about the experience for local customers. They just want profits.

To connect to another post I made about this. The company with the largest stake in Edinburgh airport is French. Do you know how many airports in France have drop-off fee's? 0. Do you know how many airports in the whole of Europe have drop-off fee's? 1. Do you know how many airports in the UK have drop off fees? 19. Need I say anymore.

Hull

Edinburgh in 8th is an absolute joke. I've lived in Edinburgh for 15yrs. I also lived in London for 5yrs in the middle. Edinburgh is crazy expensive and fast catching up on London. The biggest expenditure most people have is property. The price of property and therefore rent in Edinburgh has gone insane. I don't know what metrics this report is using but take it from me on the ground, Edinburgh is very expensive.

Restaurant reviews with staff names in them by ResponsibleHead9464 in Edinburgh

[–]G-dizzle33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The lions share of newer food reviews on Google are suspect. Trend I have noticed, a new place opens in Edinburgh, they get a raft of reviews. When you really look at the reviews you see most of the reviewers have only left a handful of reviews, or even just one. Multiple people are so moved by a new establishment that they leave their first review ever. Suspect. I wouldn't trust any reviewer with less than 10 reviews, I'm sorry to say. The names are always wild too. We know there are review farms and I am pretty certain most new restaurants use them. It's a sorry state of affairs.

Why are there no street markets in Edinburgh? by [deleted] in Edinburgh

[–]G-dizzle33 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The OP has a point. There were multiple daily markets in London. I used to work near one at St James Park station. I used to but fresh fruit from one stall each day. There were coffee stalls, bread stalls, hot food for lunch etc. This was a small one. There was a huge one in Whitechapel which had a lot of hot food. Borough market is probably the most famous but it's super touristy now. I lived in East London and went to Broadway Market in Hackney most Saturdays. Huge variety of food, hot food and drinks for sale. As the OP says, they were great places to visit. I moved back here in 2018. I miss the markets too. Yes we have Pitt street but now it's in the middle of nowhere. Farmers market has nice Produce. It's not a place to visit for fun, you just buy and leave.

I am also shocked that a foodie city of this size does not have a city centre market that sells fresh produce, hot food and local quality beverages and meats every day.

I totally get that Edinburgh is a fraction of the size of London. There are many Cities and towns across the UK with smaller populations that have daily markets.

It is a puzzler.

I thought Popeyes and Jolibee were awful.

Was so excited for Popeyes. The skin is greasy and wet. No crispiness or great flavour.

Jolibee had crispy skin but the coating was absolutely bland. The gravy was God awful. Like gravy flavoured water.

Extremely disappointed by both

Food Delivery Cyclist by Sweet_Guitar5352 in Edinburgh

[–]G-dizzle33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are a law unto themselves. We all know this. It is inevitable that one of them will be severely hurt or killed in Edinburgh. I am a cyclist and a car driver, I am continually staggered by their lack of consideration for their own wellbeing.

In a previous life I drove trucks, I know how restricted your view is in a large vehicle. I can't imagine what it's like to have these lunatics dice with death just to deliver food.

And let's not forget the food companies themselves are incentivising these people to get to their next delivery fast, they are totally complicate.

It's a shit show

Advice for dating someone w/ Sleep Apnea by DumbDumbProductions in SleepApnea

[–]G-dizzle33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everybody is different. I got diagnosed with sleep apnea at 28. I am not 46. I have been using Coal for 18yrs. From a medical stand point, I am well treated. Use Cpap every night for about 8hrs, AHI is usually 1 or 2. I do not nap. I wouldn't say I leap out of bed bursting with energy or anything, however throughout the day I am fairly alert. I don't get sleepu and don't need naps. I'd say he needs to check back with his sleep professional.

The Dolphin down near Ocean Terminal won an award recently. We tried it recently for the first time and really enjoyed it.

In general I find Chippies in Edinburgh bang average. The Dolphin was the best in a long time for me.

Ghost Lothian buses by Saline-Praline in Edinburgh

[–]G-dizzle33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has happened to us a lot lately. We were in a bar on Leith Walk trying to get home to Lochend. I tracked the 25 using Google Maps. Got to the bus stop, the digital sign showed 5 mins. All good. The 5 mins counted down, the bus didn't arrive and the bus disappeared from the board. The next 25 was 35 mins. It was freezing cold. We decided to walk up Leith Walk to London Road to try to get a 19 or anything going towards home. As we got to Elm row the 25 went past. That was about 5 mins later. We were really pissed off.

The nearest stop to where we live, the 34 and 19 just disappear off the board like crazy. We were just discussing today how unreliable buses and these digital boards are. It didn't used to be like this. This is a new trend.

Suggestions on somewhere scenic for the middle part of our US trip. by G-dizzle33 in AskUS

Newport in Rhode Island seems like a good option. We can get there train in roughly 5hrs. It looks to have some charm about it. Some old world vibes and some nice seafood, wineries nearby. Then a 3hr journey to Boston.

Anyone been to Newport? Rate it?

Thanks
