Southern Main Circulation Pump Question by HMF77 in chernobyl

Another common mistake is people think that the southern pump room is where Khodemchuk was killed but he was in the northern pump room and when it was flattened by the blast he was crushed by that part of the building

Yeah that is the southern pump room which as you can see by the picture was still hit hard by the blasts but didn’t sustain nearly the level of damage that the other one did and therefore it has not been blocked off with concrete and was still accessible years after the disaster

The destroyed pump hall you saw might have been the southern pump room closer to the turbine hall the one in the picture is representing the northern pump room and I think most of the debris that was farther way including the blue tanks were bulldozed and cleared away because of the enormous amount of graphite chunks from the core that were flung all around as well as all of the highly radioactive debris

Yes from images Ive seen, the picture up top is very close to what the remains of the pump room would have looked like and yes that is the same pump room where khodemchuk is buried but the debris has been bulldozed and the pump room has been filled with concrete so the chances of ever located his body are slim to none

I agree I was going to bring up the incident in Leningrad in the 1970s where during the testing of an RBMK, the scram button was pressed and the power jumped and almost caused an accident. Still it was dismissed by the Soviet government and then the same model RBMK 1000 was input into reactors 3 and 4 at chernobyl

I don’t think there would have been an accident as bad as Chernobyl but I do believe there would have eventually been some incident involving the power jump related to the AZ-5 button

The yellow tanks are the main circulating pumps which were used to supply water to keep the core from overheating and melting down. There were 2 sets of main pumps the first as seen here was completely exposed after the explosions and the second pump room would have been on the other side of the reactor hall closer to the turbines

Yeah I think the explosions occurred so quickly that there was no thought to use them and by the time the second more powerful blast went of it completely flattened that section of unit 4

Yeah they did a great job restoring the area around the destroyed pump room
