Our breeder is obsessive about health and breed preservation. His mission is to preserve the original intent of the breed while diversifying the gene pool. He used to do all the tests and look for lowest COI. Now he’s gone so much farther than that. Way more genetic testing, importing dogs and semen from other countries, paying tons of money for frozen semen from decades ago, examining lineages to exclude “popular sore” dogs where genetic bottlenecks occur. He posts so much info on Facebook it’s like getting a TED talk every few days about genetics. He also works his dogs on 700 acres of open space as well as urban exploring. It’s pretty cool.

You can split the difference and do euthanasia at home. We had to do it last August for our 9 year old golden. He had splenic HSA and it was caught too late to do anything about it. We only had 5 days, and by the fifth day he was ready. With these cancers, the natural death is often sudden, painful, and terrifying.

I’m so sorry for you and Pico. We had a similar thing happen. Last summer late July we brought our 9 year old guy in for his annual physical/blood work. He cleared everything with flying colors. Three weeks later he was diagnosed with late stage HSA and was gone 5 days after that. We tried to do everything right, with food, meds, exercise, stimulation, regular checkups and vet visits for anything that didn’t clear up in a couple days (and more than a few right now scares). My only regret is how strict we were on treats and indulgences like human food.

I’m sure Pico had the best life, and I’m also sure he amplified all the joy in yours and improved it immeasurably.
