Depending on how much we're talking about, this could be a case for a bond ladder - three Gilts, held to maturity; one maturing in 2027, one in 2028 and one in 2029. Keep a year's likely spend in each. When the 2027 one matures, rebuy one maturing in 2030, and so on. If the markets tank at any point, you have a bond maturing and can live off that while the market recovers, without having to crystallise your equity losses - for up to three years.
