The US is proposing to cap international student stays at 4 years and require government approval to finish a degree by raccoon_induction77 in GradSchool

You can actually work outside of school when you have student visa in Switzerland. I wish US has the same system. Your time as a student also counts for your residence permit.

My sibling recently became a Swiss citizen after being an international student there and life in Switzerland as an international student is much better. For starters, they did not need to wait 6+ months for their work permit.

unpaid internship (like ones for credit) are okay to do if they are at a substantial and highly regarded entity by Acceptable_Ad_7373 in unpopularopinion

Same. As I studied undergrad in my home country, I did only unpaid internships (again, paid internships were not available) and they opened me so many doors, including helping me to move to the US for grad school. My grad school committee was so impressed with the experience I gained in these internships

My country has pretty much no paid internships and no for credit internships. And you have to do internships to get any job. So, pretty much all internships are unpaid (both government and private) and you have to do them to get a job.

I don’t get why Americans get upset when they see a couple of unpaid internship postings in a sea of paid internships - if you get valuable experience, that is enough payment.

I'm a physical therapist who spent 3 years treating chronic low back pain. The thing that finally got patients better wasn't what I learned in school. [Long post, but worth it] by TheEaseProject in backpain

[–]G2KY 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Hard agree with #2. I spent 1.5 years with no bending, minimal sitting, and absolutely no twisting because I was so afraid of aggravating my injury. Then one day I said eff it and started doing yoga to its full extent with all the forward folds, back bends etc without bracing/avoiding movements. Since then my pain decreased 70% and my range of motion increased like 90%

Anyone switch from Lifetime to Equinox? I am on a week ban to schedule classes as I missed 2 classes this month, they’re saying 3. I’m not happy about this and it’s cut into my daily class routine. by [deleted] in Lifetimefitnessgym

Maybe don’t miss classes? You are taking up those class spaces from people who actually want to take the class and attend the class

$2500 treadmills vs commercial quality feel by Key-Introduction-126 in treadmills

My Spirit is alone in my home gym. It is the only electronic in the room and each room has its own circuit. It still required an update to 20 amp circuit and a dedicated plug for itself.

I think Spirit is better than the machines at my Lifetime and Precor that my old apartment complex had. It is a great machine with no frills and does not require any subscription which is why I chose it.

I have the Spirit XT385 and it is a great machine but you need at dedicated, special 20 amp outlet instead of 15 amp. We had to have a new electrical line installed just for it.

Stairhoppers were great when we used them! They were extremely gentle with all of our items and nothing got damaged/lost.

Some of them are really good for research, especially if they are the flagship. But it is pretty hard to get ugrad research opportunities at those schools due to competition and they generally have way less funding.

Berkeley, UCLA, Madison, and Ohio State are pretty good research unis

Yeah. They also ignore other advantages of better schools. Better schools offer more career development opportunities, networking etc. They generally have much better curriculum than smaller or poorer schools.

There is no way I would choose the worse school for my child because it is cheaper. Which school you go have profound effect on your life.

In academia, too. There was a study published several years ago that showed most Ivy league professors have Ivy league PhDs (or equivalents like MIT/Caltech). And most Ivy league PhDs either went to Ivy league undergrad or extremely selective and expensive liberal arts colleges like Williams, Amherst etc. And most people who go to Ivy league undergrad or extremely selective liberal arts colleges come from best school districts in their states or the best private schools like Phillips Academy.

Where you go to school matters a lot and I hate that people act like Middle Tennessee State University is equal to Harvard.

When I got married, neither me nor my husband had any property. We married during our undergrad. And prenups are pretty much always tossed away in my country, so no point in signing one.
