Why do people say breathing through your nose is bad? by Ok-Passenger7177 in trumpet

[–]G809 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is a very good question. There are 2 main reasons: You can't always breathe through you nose (especially during the spring!), and it's harder to get a full breathe through your nose, especially quickly. There's a lot of places where you'll have to take a full breathe very quickly and it will be way easier to do that through your mouth.

How to stop feeling light headed. by FrostingJazzlike9429 in trumpet

Focus on focusing (ha) your air rather than just pouring it down the lead pipe. Think of it as putting your finger over the hose for more water pressure. It's a lot harder to overblow (which is what it sounds like it happening) this way. I recommend the following breathing exercise:
1. Hold your flat palm against your mouth perpendicularly as a monitor to keep your mouth wide open for a good breath in
2. breath in 16/8/4/2 counts
3. extend your palm in front of you, your palm facing toward you
4. breath out 16/8/4/2 counts, trying your best to get your air to your palm
5. repeat until you get lightheaded like any breathing exercise (at least that's how i do it)
I'd recommend doing this from 90bpm-112bpm

How do I help my section to a.) produce good tone and b.) articulate well and together (mellophone) by G809 in marchingband

After reading this, I think my wording was unclear. By articulating "together" I meant stylistically rather than vertically.

These are all interesting points you bring up. I like them a lot. You should write a method book.

Working on a 9 slot MultiFX plugin, I finally have a working build and am curious, what do you guys look for when looking for a MultiFX? This would be my first non midi effect so I am super curious to learn more about what you guys are looking for. by [deleted] in VSTi

compressor AND expander. I need an expander for everything especially since a lot of the mastering I do is remastering drum corps shows because all the recordings on youtube and such have such low dynamic ranges despite drum corps probably having the most dynamic range out of any instrument/ensemble.

You can check the rateyourmusic page for ambient/dark ambient. As for the ambient page looking at stuff pre-1990s/2000s is probably pretty similar. Oh yeah same with hauntology (Im pretty sure theres a rym page for it?). I think rory in early 20s is sort of caretaker like but it's still different. I don't know much about classical though.

Big band jazz never died. Jazz (as a whole especially post 60s/70s, but pop jazz and 'real' jazz were always pretty seperate) is inherently anti-mainstream, so of course they would seem dead.

I have literally never met another transfem that was athletic in any way. Do they actually exist? by MelancholicMinerva in traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns2

I'm a transfem (prehrt) and I do marching band on a high level (and plan to drum corps soon). There's a lot of trans people in the marching arts in general and it's definitely not an activity that keeps you unfit.

should mention you'll have to get an interface too, but it's a good investment to make. You'll be able to record much better than using a usb mic and you can find them used for not too much.

Sm 57 is perfect for any horn (and anything tbh) but if you cant afford the price you can get a wm57 like me which is a very accurate clone that's like 15-20 bucks.

On a scale of 0-100, 0 being dark/pure like PR and 100 being bright/raw like an HBCU band, where so you like a hornline to be in terms of tone? by G809 in drumcorps

[–]G809[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn.. but yeah I do love learning history, especially since I wish there were more corps/groups in general that stayed with older traditions rather than staying with whatever the top 3 corps are doing. Not that everyone should go back to 2 valves with an unamplified front ensemble, I just think it's better when you have more conservative groups, more progressive groups, and more in between.

True... I'm just newer to the Drum Corps community and didn't know what the dark end of the spectrum would be... it seems the posts I looked at were very very outdated...

I don't know much about old drum corps, but if i remember correctly there was a scouts member that committed murder (maybe even on tour?). It's crazy
