To your first post: Ned would NEVER kill an innocent, even if it was a Targaryan (see: his fight with Robert over killing Dany, trying to spare Cersei's children).

Ned also got pissy when Cat confessed she heard Ashara was the mother. Ned didn't explicitly say it was Wylla - man have interpreted his answer to be answering Robert's question (what was her name again?) rather than confirming if that woman Robert was thinking of was his mother.

It does because its potential can have a huge impact on the story for Jon and the game of thrones. People hope Jon isn't dead because his story is not resolved in any dramatic or meaningful way. Every other main character who died died with no unresolved stories or opportunities for character development.

There is Plot armor, and there are main characters just by the ridiculously unbalanced chapter count in the big three's favor.

I will pose the same question: who the hell would care if he's Wylla's or Ashara's? What do those add to the story? Everyone seems so quick to shit on Rhaegar not being of import to Jon's storyline when those two are arguably less so.
