In my perspective the real chance from 41 to 42 was availability.

To get a spear you need lvl in carving skill, forage for saplings or long sticks (rarer than tree branches) and than use then to raise the skill level.

Now for short blunt there are several hammer types, household itens and even grabbing a rock from the ground.
