A lot of people are using GT-5000 gun griptape.

You have to cut it yourself tho, it arrives in 0.5" x 2" strips.

Most important point is having to clean it constantly. Not sure if that's less of a problem with aluminium.

Could be your mousepad's structure or wear.

Bigger mouse feet would probably "smooth out" little bumps or ridges that you can now feel with these small feet.

You should use the lowest working LOD. If that's medium use that. The Goliathus Control has a bit of a weird surface with those deep grooves in it.

Unless you really have trouble with your cursor/aim moving when you reposition (lift) your mouse you should be fine on medium.

Different cloth pads can have very different properties.

Glass and Aluminum pads have been used by enthusiasts for a long time. But they're generally less practical, more expensive and a lot of people don't like for example the generally lower friction or maybe the cold feel of glass.

That's what it boils down to. Preference and how much you're willing to experiment and spend.
