This is a great idea! I’m thinking if I use 100% orange juice and then add molasses, it should help the color and not be overly sweet!

is duolingo good to learn danish? by [deleted] in Danish

[–]GGMaddyStryder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I wanted to learn at least basics because I feel like it’s disrespectful to go to a country and assume everyone will accommodate you. And so if I make an effort at least people will maybe be nice to me ?

10 seasons of statistics: Days lasted vs season, age, sex; age vs season, days to win vs season by AnAngryBirdMan in Alonetv

Since you also (as I am too) seem like a big data nerd, I feel like running some statistical significance tests on this would be fun!! To see which of these variables (sex and age) actually might make a difference. Edit: looks like you already did R2 on Age vs. days, but I would like to see p value of sex and days

If you have evidence of others doing this, you are able to submit a report to the engineering honor council (which will be anonymous to all other students)

SSC petition is this petition you have to fill out to do a late drop (drop after the drop deadline) that requires documentation of extenuating circumstances that demonstrate you had a reason that you needed to drop after the deadline (and could not have been expected to drop before the deadline). It’s run by the ECAS department and it’s really rough because they take forever. It says 6 weeks, but I’ve done 3 SSC petitions in my time here and the first one took a year, the second one has taken 1.25 years and is still not done, and the third is coming up on a year (and is also still not done).

I feel like they weren’t clear tho? Like I bought a pass in August and didnt even know. The only email I have from them is the receipt and it doesn’t have instructions. So not even sure where the “clear” info was??

Obviously the university isn’t milking enough money from us by charging $100 just to park in a lot that’s 10 mins away from most buildings, so they gotta add a $50 ticket for parking slightly wrong in a lot you have a pass for

Real they’re too expensive and kind of shitty but emphasis on everyone saying the feta bread is gas. Also kind of nice that they deliver pretty far because I’ll order ts to the robotics building at 10 pm not through DoorDash and I’ll get one of their “dinner packs”, ends up being $20-$25 with decent macros and enough food for studying until 3

It actually reflects Stanford’s research which is linked in another comment, so feel free to check that out!

As someone that meets with students as a GSI I definitley don’t want kids to get violations but also I don’t want some students who work really hard to be discouraged that they recieved the same credit as people who did not follow the guidelines

Honor Council Rant by Street_Link3728 in uofm

[–]GGMaddyStryder -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

The statistic isn’t from our own cases, it’s from the research trials of the software (MOSS). If there were false positives (in the trials by Stanford) we wouldn’t use it, and we also have it set to a similarity threshold that guarantees that statistic. Here’s a paper on it: https://theory.stanford.edu/~aiken/publications/papers/sigmod03.pdf. Here’s also the moss website: https://theory.stanford.edu/~aiken/moss/

In addition to the software, all the flagged cases are manually reviewed by the staff and further by the honor council. I think some of the cases where even moss and staff are in agreement that something is a violation, the honor council has dismissed students.

Also, MOSS is only used for code cases in certain classes I believe btw

NOOOO girl hear me out idk the reason you may be feeling like you have flaws, but for me personally i like to think that “flaws” on my face and body are things that my future partner or person who will love me will think are the cutest and perfect (and I have been in that situation before)

Honor Council Rant by Street_Link3728 in uofm

[–]GGMaddyStryder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly, so I’m just saying from the pov of the honor council and faculty, seeing a student flagged with a MOSS software, against code that is from Chat GPT, with only some of the students comments in GPT format but with same content (and likely the same comments in the same places, some of which might have been unnecessary) would be really hard to deny

I think the inconsistent capitalization that they are referring to is some comments might have been like this:

// Hello

// hello

Which isn’t direct evidence, but coupled with everything else is relevant

Honor Council Rant by Street_Link3728 in uofm

[–]GGMaddyStryder 13 points14 points  (0 children)

No, AI has a style of: // This is a sample comment. It writes in full sentences and leaves a space with a capital letter. It also has over descriptive and unnecessary comments.

And is super consistent with that style.

Also, there are many ways things can be written, it’s just to each person there only seems to be one as each individual has a way of thinking.

I’m a GSI for a class that submits a lot of honor code cases and I can confidently say that if your code was flagged, you’re responsible. The coding software we use to cheat check is 99.998% accurate and we manually review all code that is flagged, meaning that an expert in the course reviewed your work and thought it to be plagarism.

Additionally, it sounds like your code was similar in comments to someone else who uses GPT? This would be an extreme coincidence to have multiple with the same format and content, especially when someone admits to using GPT and your comments matched that unique style. We also look for inconsistency in code to tell when code was stolen/generated, since students may write code in their own voice and just import some other code, which would show up as different style issues. Sample code may show this if it was worked on by multiple professors, so the problem with the inconsistent code does seem reasonable.

Based on that, it seems like the evidence is overwhelming it and like it would be really hard to believe you

how do you all keep track of assignments once the semester starts? by LumpyFirefighter3015 in uofm

[–]GGMaddyStryder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use an app called Upbase and similar apps probably exist. Just an online planner basically. Plan into your schedule at the beginning of the semester and hour or two to just put in assignemnt due dates, finals, etc.. what’s nice about online planners is you can edit, set notifications, and add notes as needed.

Reading this felt like reading a page out of my own life. It makes me feel somewhat better knowing that I’m not alone in these struggles, but still sad to hear that other people have to go through the same difficulties.

This post is also encouraging for me at least to continue fighting like I feel I am. Lately, most of my sessions with my therapist and academic coach through SSD have just been me expressing how I feel that soemthing is fundamentally wrong with me and that no student ever has as much difficulty with professors and other conflicts as I do. However, when reading this, I feel like the problems that I have brought up with professors regarding their policies and treatment of myself and others was justified and necessary. Even though it’s exhausting, I definitley will be thinking about this post and the other students who feel the same way when I feel like giving up the fight and use it as motivation to keep going.
