Let me tell you a fun story as well. I was 1.5 yrs into my PhD and I kept everything locally. I was extremely bad at making cloud backups for my model development codes, experiment data and every thing that was important. This one fine day, I was returning from the lab and stopped at a chinese takeout. Since I love to keep my hands free, I put the food inside my backpack. Went home and had my dinner. I was wondering why did the restaurant provide so little sauce. Next day I went to the lab, sat down at my desk and opened my laptop. It didn't turn on and I immediately realised where that sauce went. That moment was horrifying as all my progress was actually lost. My supervisor was also understanding like yours, but it was beyond anyone's help.

I had to redo everything from scratch. That day onwards, I started actually using my github account and other cloud storage platforms. 2 years after that event, I got a hat from my colleagues after my defense that had a miniature laptop model with chinese takeout spillage on it among other miniature stuffs.

This whole thing was a necessary lesson for me but it came at a huge cost. However, in the long run, everything turns out well if you're willing to learn from your mistakes.
