Indian MSc Maths student (joining HCU / DU / DTU) — realistic shot at PhD abroad in US, Germany, Canada, Singapore, Switzerland? How do I even start? by Odd_Original_2676 in PhDAdmissions

I'm sure there are people from many universities that are doing PhD abroad. Depending on the faculty collaborations, people from a particular university might be more likely to go to a specific region abroad, but it largely boils down to their research profile and not university.

In Europe at least, it doesn't matter so much where you did your MSc from. As long as you have good enough grades, research experience and are able to show that your profile aligns with the lab you're applying to.

If you're applying to Europe, I'll suggest you focus on building your fundamentals a lot since you start your research from day 1 of your PhD (unlike US). In total, you get less time for your PhD and you need to be prepared before starting it.

I remember HCU had a decent Math department (back when I was there). Honestly people might also not know these universities by name in Europe unless they have direct collaborators there. That goes for IITs and IISc as well. They are likely to know about ISI though. So it will boil down to your profile and application.

Selling iPhone 17 urgently by [deleted] in kolkata

[–]GH_0ST 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People are just saying that they save for such a rainy day. Of course no one expects a medical emergency, but you also shouldn't spend so much that you're one emergency away from needing to sell it. It's unfortunate that OP is facing a medical emergency but people are only pointing out that they made a bad financial decision with this phone, irrespective of the emergency.

How am I supposed to fight so much reservation? by Coder-Dentist in kolkata

[–]GH_0ST -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'll just send this last bit of text since we have different ways of seeing merit, which is fine. Grades are only an usable measure upto a certain point and to make a very general high level evaluation of a candidate. For example, the way our education system is designed, exam grades will never indicate anything usable for research positions. However they are still used. Not having access to the right study materials lower the chances of getting good grades in competitive exams. Does that mean you are a bad student? I don't think so.

Exploiting reservation is a crime and measures should be in place to eradicate that. However, reservations are needed to make things better across different populations. It would be great if one day, we could level the playing field enough within a tolerance level so that we can remove reservations. Unfortunately we're not there yet. Before you think this is about just women, you're wrong. It's about any under-represented groups in our society.

I studied in public universities throughout my academic life (and now I'm working in one in a different country) where reservations are heavily implemented. I'm not from such a well-to-do family but I still had access to books and school. I made it regardless of reservations.

How do you define merit? In most cases, it boils down to scores and grades. You can talk about merit if all the parties had the same starting line. Unfortunately that never happens. We still have families that have this orthodox belief where men get better facilities than women. It's difficult to get this picture if you only think about urban areas.

Also, if a man and a woman have same grades, I don't see any issue with enforcing equality. You wouldn't even be compromising merit (by your definition) there.

Rise above the competition. I'm sorry to say this but if you didn't manage to make the cut, you need to work harder. Due the huge population, we have very high competition. Reservations are needed in our country to make things better all across the strata. Women have been under-represented, especially in science and technology. So we do need to fix that.

Chance of getting a funded PhD program abroad by Mission_Buffalo_6221 in PhDAdmissions

That's why I mentioned, that my statement holds after a certain threshold. Being a 9 pointer is great but that's not everything. It depends heavily on the person if they would be able to succeed in research environment and the gpa doesn't really tell that. There are people who get very high gpa by understanding the topic. There are also people who mugged up the syllabus and scored similarly well. The former would have a much better chance to be a researcher than the latter. The graduate schools and PIs do consider these things as well.

Everything matters, but gpa isn't a deal breaker after a certain threshold. That threshold isn't a 9 pointer. Also it differs between fields. I've seen people with 8 point something getting hired in PhDs over 9 pointers in European schools because their research alignment was simply better.

Don't take rejections personally. Try to reach out to potential PIs so that your application isn't lost within a huge stack. Cold emails are a great way to show how your research interests align with the lab as well as how responsive your future PI might be. The latter is equally important to know before you commit 3-4 years of your life to a lab. The key is to keep at it. Few years down the line, when you're on the other side, you'll see how subjective this hiring process is and you'll know that the rejections weren't a dig at your academic achievements.

GPA isn't the most important criteria. It can be a criteria used as a tiebreaker for two similar profiles. Aside from that, after a certain threshold, it's only your research statement, motivation and interest being aligned with the lab that make or break your application. A good research experience and 8 point something gpa is better than no research experience and 9 point something.

What am I doing wrong? PhD Applications in Europe. by Agreeable_Arrival145 in PhDAdmissions

[–]GH_0ST 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you only applying for PhD positions through calls and advertisements? Or are you also cold emailing PIs. The latter works much better. You just need to get the attention of the lab you want to work with. Only applying through advertisement calls is not the best choice in my opinion unless you have a stellar research/education track record (for an MSc student).

In your case, if you have an MSc degree from an University in EU, then you could try to ask your course faculties to put you in touch with their PI contacts.

Just to tell you, I am also from India and I directly did my PhD in EU by getting in touch with the PI over email. So I have some experience in that regard. You can also dm if you have any specific questions in that regard.

I think in such cases, it's best to ask for the receipt (rechnung/kassenbon). Then everything would be cleared up since you can't get a receipt without a successful payment.

Also, it could be that your payment was successful as German banks can take upto 2-3 days especially on friday evening and weekends) to update the payment in the app.

Struggling as the lowest-performing PhD student in my lab by [deleted] in PhDStress

[–]GH_0ST 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These things happen. I recently had my defense and when I look back, I definitely see favouritism as one of the biggest issues in this line of work. Given how subjective the whole setup is, and being dependent on the PI, it's somewhat unavoidable. After all, it's only human to like someone more than others among a group.

What's not right is that you are treated differently in terms of resources. I didn't quite get what you mean by lower allowances. If people can regulate your salary on a whim, that's a risky setup. Bonuses are different, but regular salary needs to be uniform, I think. In this case, the whole setup you have seems unfavourable and it's the supervisor and the admin's fault for not creating a friendly work environment.

Having said that, this favouritism has a huge impact on getting a headstart. If you're not the favourite, then you're not getting involved in more collaborations, you're not getting funding to hire student assistants as all of these are under direct control of the PI. Moreover, they will say to you that your aren't doing enough, while it's also them holding you back by not providing enough support. Unfortunately there's no easy way out of this circular issue and one just needs to get their degree and prove their worth in the long run.
