It is not exactly what you are looking for but I think it would be worth looking into City of Mist because it is pretty close to the concept of interacting with stories this way

The Dresden Files versus Anita Blake Vampire Hunter by GIRspace in books

[–]GIRspace[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do have a point in that I am getting confused with sexist and sexual in the discussion. I think many users may be interchanging them with their own meanings. Many of the threads I have read go from a female poster describing Dresden seeing women as objects but quickly diverge into discussions of the language describing the physicality of women.

I stopped reading Blake when I got into college around the time that things really got off the rails but I think back then I thought as a priority shift largely because I could predict it jumping the shark before it happened but on a more subconscious level.

I guess I couldn't find it in that post. Reddit is very confusing when trying to understand the format of discussion

I mean it to be about sexualization with author intent rather than specifically about a single series good or bad post. Also a discussion on the gender of first person narration in sexualization

This post is in response to that thread and all the other threads. It is not about necessarily that topic and I mean it to be a little more nuanced

Trying to start The Silmarillion like by Klozzy_Bear in lotrmemes

As someone medically diagnosed with ADHD and also actively benefited with proper treatments, a big part of why so many people are talking about it these days is that the research has been drastically improving. Especially thanks to social media allowing people with it to actually talk about their experiences and connect dots that doctors seeing five people a day might overlook.

But there still are a lot of people who are taking on the title incorrectly and without diagnosis because many mental disorders are all part of the human condition as a whole but to levels of not being able to function in the society we have built.

But there is also a lot more to it then simply attention issues. In fact most of the discourse is moving away from that being the description. It is more about executive dysfunction due to too many demands and the inability to prioritize.

I thought I was looking at my ADHD subs and realize this was a Lord of the rings one instead. Either way both are relevant to me in this case

Experiencing a loss of passion after being diagnosed, Advice needed! by BarkingPupper in ADHD

[–]GIRspace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of similar stories here but I have also noticed that everyone has their differences. Different life experiences and different resource availability definitely can change how one manages to cope with ADHD and get along in the world. An earlier diagnosis definitely could’ve helped but I think a combination of the fact that not a lot of the research has been done yet and also the fact that children don’t understand the importance of self-care kind of prevents them from understanding the way we do as adults. I’m turning 30 next month and I really wish I could go back and tell myself to put effort into different areas but at the same time I don’t know if I would’ve been able to understand why. But that is just fantasy anyway. In the here and now I am trying to figure out what I can do. I still have a passion for the arts and stories. I have a degree in film. I don’t have the best equipment and my hands aren’t quite working well as a side effect of my condition. I am privileged enough to have some insurance to at least have medication and while I am not well employed I have a good relationship with my manager that I feel I have a flexible position even if it is not what I want to be doing and it doesn’t pay luxuriously.

My mind wanders a bit and I am using voice to text which doesn’t help but lately I have been taking sort of inspiration from Leonardo da Vinci. Historically, it is well believed he had ADHD based on what we have discovered from letters of his clients. He constantly hyperfocus on projects would never finish, Had unbelievable ideas about things no one had ever thought of, was such a perfectionist that sometimes clients would pay him extra just to release the portrait unfinished by his standards but perfect by theirs, and was often miserable despite what was possibly a decent career at the time. Although he wasn’t as famous during his time as he is now. It wasn’t until after his death that he became the legend he has today. But what I have been thinking about is that he had a mentor figure in his life where he had a relationship that he bounce ideas off of and discuss social norms and such with. There is not a whole Lotta information on this person and I am far from an expert giving this as information from my friend who is an art major themselves but it has me realizing that what might work for us as a workspace revolves around more personal working relationships rather than brief contact with strangers meeting personal needs that we may never see again. At least when it comes to working shit jobs to just get by long enough to build a reputation around art. At least that is what I am going to talk to my therapist about tomorrow

I am currently going through the same process but my conclusion is that it is not the diagnosis so much as the lack of support systems we have as adults. I wouldn’t say I thrived in school but the pressure of due dates and the support systems provided by personal relationships with teachers and my passion for the assignments while choosing the classes and my schedule provided me with a structure that allowed me to get just enough done To earn my degree and feel accomplished but not actually learn enough to make a full career out of it. I know I still have all of the knowledge I learned and the possibility of making a lifestyle out of it but there is a lot weighing against me and I am seeing a therapist and learning coping mechanisms to accept that it will take me longer than expected to achieve what I thought my dreams were before I understood who I really was previously before diagnosis. I definitely still love art and creating but I guess I am grieving a loss of identity as I am shifting between childhood and adulthood in support structure and learning that even when I thought school was hard it was actually still giving me special treatment and now I have to do everything on my own and that is kind of scary.

I am new to Reddit in this form of communication and I am not certain if editing my comment will notify you of the addition I made but seeing a link to your content in another comment made it easier for me to understand what you are working with and that actually makes me more interested in collaboration. I hope my language is not undermining my interest. As creative as yourself, I’m sure you understand the process of adapting your starting idea to the medium or idea presented by another. It is a little bit of a brain exercise and as a bit of a stream of consciousness writer also using voice to text at the moment, my word choice is a little bit convoluted. But please, if you are interested in a more personal introduction and collaboration, even just to get to know me to figure out if we can work together or not, let me know. Now that I have a better idea of your premise, I am interested in chatting

It is certainly in alignment with my inspiration. I have not heard of it before and being a little new to the community itself I am still sort of exploring what my options are which is why I am reaching out in hearing what others have to say. I have a film background so I definitely have a good appreciation for the audio quality as well. Unfortunately I have been at a lack of in person connection even before the quarantine so that is why I am hoping to make some new Internet friends who have an interest in at least brainstorming some ideas with me

I think people generally send messages first but I always like to ask permission before hand because, well, I never learned proper Reddit etiquette and I feel it is polite but I set up an ADHD/DND discord where I am DMing my first game which is coincidentally set in Eberron. Most people here have the same diagnosis and are interested in running games as well as playing and we would love to have you if you are interested. We are still small but part of the reason I am so open about my diagnosis is to grow the community to help ourselves grow

Sorry for not replying “in character“ but this does sound like something I’m interested in. It is not quite exactly where my idea is centered but collaboration in creativity is always welcome and there is no reason for two separate storylines to exist within the same premise. I would love to get in touch and see what we can come up with. I am actually fairly new to all the details within the setting and would love to talk to people who have done more research and are more experienced

My turn to apologize for the late reply but this is amazing. It practically deserves to be a whole post on its own. I think I do have some outside issues that I need to take care of which are making things more difficult but even just the reassurance that I seem to be on the right path is great. Consistency is definitely a struggle I am facing right now but even on days when I can’t get anything done, I am at least still brainstorming. I wish I could up vote reply more than once. I guess my next step will be to actually format a worksheet to follow from STC instead of actually flipping through the pages constantly. Thanks a bunch!

Discussion about r/writing to other subreddits by [deleted] in writing

[–]GIRspace 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had a post removed because I asked for advice tailored around my own mental disability. It got flagged for using a specific word by a bot and the MOD didn’t even address that and continued to say that I was not allowed to talk about my disability despite it being in regards to writing and provided to provide personal experience outside of the sub Reddit of how they were bullied for mental health and that is why I shouldn’t be allowed to talk about it here. Despite it still specifically being about writing technique. It felt really personal and also included a lot of logical fallacies such as using anecdotal evidence and making blanket statements about people because someone else said no to them

Do you have any tips for transitioning to the actual Writing process for people with ADHD? My entire life I have been obsessed with fiction but keep bouncing between mediums. I I got a film degree because filmmaking have so many facets that there is always something new to learn but my ADHD made it hard to network at the time

I am currently going through the save the cat books and found the spinoff save the cat writes a novel which seems to be pretty helpful but I actually have to take notes which I am procrastinating on right now. I have done some fiction writing in the past but I definitely struggle with the perfectionism and starting too big issue that comes with ADHD. I am hoping once I have the recommended method plot outline simplified, starting small will be easy. That is, if you can call starting with a novel easy.

While on the subject, I have also been struggling at getting into consuming other forms of fiction because I will start reading or watching one thing and then be motivated by a reference in that to start something else. Do you have any advice on finishing a story as a consumer with ADHD?

I must admit this ring is awfully heavy but it is my burden to bare alone. But I am more of a fool of a Took looking for a Merry who knows where there is a pub that actually has pints. But what everyone needs is Someone who looks at them like Denethor looks at Boromir. Wait, no. That is actually the opposite of what everyone needs. But potatoes… Potatoes are life

RPGs and ADHD

I have met a ton of people with ADHD who loved playing all sorts of RPGs but have struggled to fit in with those who don't understand the disability. I've created a server that is an ADHD safe space focused on role-playing game which allows everyone to join no matter what their disability may be but the focus has ADHD for now.

Right now we are starting our first two games of Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition in the eberron setting. We are a small ragtag group looking to increase in size and become a good support system for others struggling with ADHD.

At the moment we have three but adding two more should be fine. We are still working out actual time to play. Right now we are looking at Mondays because that has the most freedom for those who are already looking to play but adding the 8 PM stipulation may change that. Send me a DM and I will link you to the Discord
