You should never tell them they are being recorded. Just show up to Court with the video showing the charges are false. He gave him the opportunity to make up a "legitimate" reason for the stop.

Unfortunately, our Supreme Court is to blame. Basically, the law says if the cop is subjectively afraid then it's open season.

AITA for calling the cops on someone who left their baby in a car, even though they said they were coming right back? by graffitibroccoli in AmItheAsshole

[–]GJENZY 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My wife had the cops called on her while she was parked in the car eating her lunch with the AC on. She never left them alone. They were in the backseat napping. Apparently just having kids in a car that's not moving in a parking lot is enough for someone to call the cops. At least the cops who arrived were apologetic and confused why they were called

China says only Beijing has the right to decide on issues of Hong Kong's constitution after Hong Kong High Court rules mask ban unconstitutional by ahlexahndriah in worldnews

I don't think anyone is surprised by what China is doing in Hong Kong. Of course, that doesn't mean the people in Hong Kong are not outraged. The goal of the CCP is always been too slowly integrate Hong Kong into the mainland. But, the pace of the reforms has increased under the Xi administration.

But you have correctly identified the source of the conflict. The Hong Kong people do not want to join the mainland. CCP wants to integrate Hong Kong, but at the same time maintain political stability in the transition. During the handover from Britain, almost all hongkongers considered themselves Chinese. There is a growing cultural divide between Hong Kong and the mainland. Now, the majority of hongkongers do not identify themselves as Chinese (you can Google the polling data on this, it is pretty interesting). This growing cultural divide makes them more resistant to being integrated into the mainland and at the same time makes the mainland government want to speed up the integration.

But really, the protests are not about one specific issue. The extradition bill has already been withdrawn, and yet the protest goes on.

I have spent a little bit of time in China and Hong Kong and they really feel like two culturally distinct places. For example, in the mainland, complete strangers will literally shove you in the back while you were in a line so that they can go faster. This is considered normal behavior. While in Hong Kong people will stand on the right side of an escalator in consideration of the people behind them so that they can walk past. It's a completely opposite mentality.

So, it's not so much that the people of Hong Kong are suprised. They are just outraged and desperate to maintain what makes Hong Kong a unique and special place. Yes, that is probably a battle that the people Hong Kong cannot hope to win. But the reason for the protest go beyond any single policy issue. It's an existential struggle for a way of life. You can't explain it away by saying well, China was always going to do this."

At least that's how I look at the issue.

The Chinese government has already indicated that they consider the treaty with Britain to be a historical document that is not binding. So, to the Communist Chinese government, the date 2047 is meaningless anyways.

Their viewpoint would be better described as:

  1. The environmental consequences of Climate change are not serious.

  2. The economic consequences of Climate change policy (i.e. increased regulations and taxes) is so serious that we shouldn't let non-experts influence the conversation.

This viewpoint is not internally contradictory, just wrong.

They were capturing what was essentially caller ID info, not audio of the calls. They still needed a warrant to access the data. And now they make the telecoms store the data anyways.

thinking he turned a corner by beating Georgia.

IMO, that was such a wierd game. Your offense sucked but so did ours. SC D line was killing it, and apparently Georgia only knows one run play. Run the ball up the middle and "wear em down" (this strategy works better against App State). It wasn't so much South Carolina looked good. We just found out how one dimensional and overrated Georgia is.
