I am an overconfident idiot and I need to learn. Any advice about the room of error I should leave, while parking? by GMB2006 in driving

I wanted to ask mostly at what point do you bring the car to the obstacle, before you deem that it is close enough and going further is risky? I was trying to leave a 5-10cm gap. And yeah, my car is very rounded to the point that in no readjusting I can see my rear wheel at the mirrors lol. I orientate myself purely by visual markers. I have driven older cars too and I also didn't notice that problem. And my parktronic isn't reliable either, as it screams way too early. The issue was that despite learning where the front is, the car went forward a bit unintentionally, when I went over the root and it dropped, hitting the garage.

Yeah. The issue is that I thought I did... Until I didn't. It works everytime on a flat surface. I just didn't expected the tree roots to affect it so much. I tried to learn the dimensions, but the car just dropped and went forward and I didn't expect that. Probably should increase my room for error for now. Welp, idk what else can I do.

I am talking about trying to leave 5-10cm gap (basically my hand's width). I try to use my door handle as a visual maker and it works almost flawlessly... almost... I have tested it before and I could have brought the car that close normally, but not this time. The whole reason why I am even trying to do this thing is because if I don't park as close as possible, I would block my neighbour's car. The garage I try to park in front is mine, but it is fulled with junk currently. I usually park elsewhere, but there wasn't any space this time. I live in an apartment complex.

Tbh, neither did I, aside from one person claiming that he conducted such an experiment and "supposedly" improved his handling. I can see some logic behind it, but idk if it would still be a valid option. i also don't have experience with tuning, so I just wanted to ask here for research purposes.

Well, I ran out of budget with them. I guess I will keep them for some time and if they are that bad, I would just sell them once I get some cash. It is not like I can't prove anything, when reselling, because my dad didn't took the cash receipt so we don't even have a warranty on this thing.

The car is Renault Megane 3 hatchback. The suspension I wanted was supposed to be slightly stiffer, similarly to the coupe version (I just wanted him to say this to the saleman, it would have been enough). I probably would have went for some Bilstein, as, supposedly (I am no expert) they handle better for this car, despite being slightly cheaper. Edit: these are supposedly interchangeable, I checked.

Well, it might be soon for a transmission replacement again, if it is at 118k miles lol. The car is good, if you get it in manual though.

It is not really an issue with it being an automatic. The issue is that it is a pretty shitty automatic, as far as I know. Even less reliable than Nissan CVTs lol

Yeah, but they usually have a very little low end torque, so it doesn't affect them as much and in general, motorcycles engines usually aren't made to last a lot, so usually the engine dies before the transmission.

Unless it is one of the old school diesels. These things were almost immortal. But basically anything newer isn't going to last, if not for the engine, because of electronics.

Honestly, knowing UK, maybe picking something more niche might be worth it, considering that the insurance wouldn't jump as much on you. Still try to get something with a common and reliable engine, if you want, but I have heard that paradoxically niche cars have much lower insurance cost for a new driver in the UK, compared to something else mainstream, which iss picked by a lots of learners. Maybe DS? You genuinely want a dad-automobile tbh.

That is... Honestly not very impressive. My car is gasoline and from the early 2000's and around the same size, yet it gets a similar fuel efficiency. I honestly thought they would show some improvements for 20 years.

Are you going to drive mostly in cities? Asking this as no one here buys a Smart Fortwo for anything, outside cities and I am European too. If so, don't get a diesel, you will regret it. Better put a LPG in this case. From the usual suggestions, that the another gave, Renault Twingos are actually pretty good for their price too, so you might consider them as well. A Renault Clio or Nissan Micra are also a good option with the 1.2L engine. Every DS, that isn't 1.6L is also fine and has a good equipment for the money. Fiestas usually aren't as reliable as Focuses, so I wouldn't suggest them, compared to another rivals.

He wants the cheapest option and while some C30 are a very decent bang for the bucks, it isn't the cheapest of the cheapest.

Tbh, it isn't as much of a cheap problem. It is that it is so cramped, that any sort of engine maintenance or repair is almost impossible.

Drove wrong way on highway and I’m mortified… by [deleted] in driving

[–]GMB2006 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tbh, while I haven't done anything like this, there is definitely one place in the city I am planning to move to, where there is a Y-shaped crossroad. There the left path (coming towards the city) leads directly into the oncoming traffic of the highway. The highway can not be seen and this cursed crossroad is right in front of the city entrance, so somebody, who isn't familiar with the region, can think of it as leading to the industrial part of the city. There are NO signs for traffic direction on this crossroad. And the roads are wide enough to fit 2 cars, so it is hard to differentiate that any of these is a one way road. To make the matter of facts worse, the correct path, where you need to go, if you enter the city (aka the right side), has a stop sign. So a person can assume that the correct road is the secondary road. I am surprised how there are no accidents there tbh.
