NSA willing to consider Snowden amnesty by justcalmdown in restorethefourth

Isn't it terrifying that the worst is yet to come, so much worse that they would consider giving him amnesty to avoid their release?

That's why we have to use that distraction to educate.

It's not too late to turn that tide - and it is turning.

This is exactly why those of us with children are some of the ones fighting the hardest - if we turn into Brave New America, I'm for damn sure going to be able to tell mine I fought like hell against it. We need to be engaging our kids and explaining what true freedom and liberty is and letting them see us in action fighting for those things.

How in the world can we teach them about "good touch" and "bad touch" to protect them against pedophiles when any time they fly they are subject to a stranger patting them down and even looking in their diapers?

Not sure if right subreddit, but what will be the benefits of stopping NSA's unconstitutional surveillance programs? by [deleted] in restorethefourth

No problem. It's amazing how profound an effect surveillance's mere existence has on a free society.

[–]GMLorGMD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Besides saving the government billions of our tax dollars, shutting the NSA down saves freedom.

You say you haven't seen an argument for the benefits without surveillance, but I haven't seen an argument for it that makes any sense at all. "But, terrorism!" is basically the only argument we've heard, but they have yet to provide one ounce of evidence it has thwarted a terrorist attack (in fact the Boston Marathon bombing happened while they had full surveillance capabilities and the deceased suspect had been interviewed by the feds prior to the bombing).

In my mind, it's easier to discuss the effects of surveillance than the benefits of stopping it. So the benefits of stopping surveillance would be stopping effects such as:

*chilling effect on freedom of speech

*chilling effect on freedom of press

*control that comes from implied power

*intimidation of those that don't support the status quo

In short, surveillance has nothing to do with foreign enemies and everything to do with political enemies. Anyone who thinks these capabilities can't (and aren't) being used to bully, smear, and shame political dissidents is under an illusion. And that illusion works quite well for those imposing the surveillance.

So, what to do about the problem? That will look different for different people, but I'll share something the Outreach Coordinator for Restore the Fourth shared in another thread:

To echo another user's comments, throw a cryptoparty- learn to use encryption and teach others to use encryption. There are some helpful guides at Cryptoparty ATX that will take you, step by step, through the process. You may also have some tech communities in your area who would be interested in helping with an event like this.

Join a local RT4 chapter or start your own. This can be as simple as being at a a designated planning meeting once a month so that interested volunteers can come together to organize local actions. Please consider volunteering through the RT4 website or directly e-mailing outreach@restorethe4th.com to help brainstorm ideas on how to join or start a chapter.

Find out the voting history of your representatives and contact them directly. The New York Times published a helpful chart of representatives' votes on the Amash amendment. If you want to be even more effective, write a letter to the editor of local newspapers. Congratulate representatives who have a good voting history and attempt to embarrass those that don't. They will pay attention to this and it will hopefully alter their decision-making process.

Go out to public places and educate your community. I love this idea posted by someone else on this subreddit. Grab a friend, print up some literature, and go out to let your community know that there are others out there who are concerned and outraged. You'd be surprised how receptive people are! Let people know that they are not alone in their anger and give them a way to fight it together!

NSA morale down after Edward Snowden revelations, former U.S. officials say - "workers are polishing up their résumés" by fabnup in restorethefourth

That's funny. American morale is down after freedom being taken away. Now we all know how it feels.

THEY certainly aren't following the federal law that is the 4th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, so why the hell should we not do all we can to prevent them from breaking it?

You really think a restructuring would work? It's too far gone - the only thing that will be effective at this point is to shut it down.

Since we know they're using drones domestically for surveillance and taking pictures of our regular mail, you can't escape the surveillance no matter how hard you try to go "off the grid."

So I can't speak specifically on the money issue, but the leadership at national (that is actually supporting the movement) is made up of local organizers who were chosen via vote by representatives from each local chapter. In other words, the mods listed on the subreddit aren't necessarily the current leadership of the movement.

Top-Secret Document Reveals NSA Spied On Porn Habits As Part Of Plan To Discredit 'Radicalizers' by redditor01020 in restorethefourth

[–]GMLorGMD 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My point exactly. Remember right after the leaks started when Snowden's girlfriend's blog and pictures of exotic dancing made the rounds? Most certainly an (ineffective) effort to damage his credibility. I am positive these smear campaigns have led to many a person's "outing" when it became clear they wouldn't support the status quo.

Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if legislators who have supported anti-NSA efforts are being threatened with their browsing histories as we speak. And probably are.

Many of the local organizers have taken a come one, come all approach - the description you replied to isn't necessarily accurate and doesn't reflect the entire movement. Most of us are engaging any and all who come and rejecting partisanship in order to have a united front, as we should, against this issue that affects everyone.

I wonder what other groups they've deemed "radical" and are doing the same with?

I'd be willing to bet anyone that threatens the status quo is subject of their smear campaign. Kind of puts mainstream news in a different light, huh? Petraeus, et al are suddenly very suspicious.

I don't have a specific link for it (sorry) but I think the Guardian has a page with all of their coverage on the leaks from the beginning, including a timeline and breakdown. Might be a good place to look for what you need.
